Need of Glass Packaging for Health and Environmental Reasons Presented by ARUN KUMAR DUKKIPATI President Packaging products division, HSIL Ltd., Hyderabad

Govt allows 100% FDI in Food Processing Industry It has been decided to promote 100% FDI in Government approval route for trading including through e-commerce in respect of food products manufacture or products in India. The Government is making efforts to double the food processing level of fruits and vegetables which currently stands at only 10%. The Government has allowed 100% FDI in food processing sector as more investments is required to strengthen the entire chain of food processing.

Glass is sustainable and 100% recyclable Recycling saves energy, Costs for melting drop about 2-3% for every 10% recycled glass used in the manufacturing of containers. Recycling reduces dependence on raw materials, whose availability is depleting rapidly. Recycling decreases greenhouse gas emissions, using six tons of recycled container glass in the manufacturing process equals one ton of carbon dioxide reduced. 1. Glass is non-toxic Glass is made from abundant, naturally occurring materials Glass is FDA approved

Keeps food safe. Glass is sustainable and 100% recyclable Scientists no longer ask if toxic substances migrate from plastic to food during microwave heating. They ask how much toxins migrate. They ask if you should use plastic to reheat foods for kids, the ill, the elderly. They ask far too many questions and provide too few reassuring answers. No doubt scientists will continue to duke it out. In the meantime, we should prefer to play it safe. On another safety note: Glass is cleaner than plastic. Glass non-porous surface doesn t absorb food and germs and it can be safely washed at high temperatures.

Glass is sustainable and 100% recyclable 2. Glass is impermeable and nonporous Glass protects its contents from moisture & oxygen Glass can be reused endlessly without degradation Enhances food flavor. Ever notice how milk taste better packed in glass? The same is true of home-stored food. Food simply tastes fresher, cleaner and fuller stored in glass. Glass safe, glossy surface repels food odors and residual flavors. And food reheated in glass whether in a conventional oven or microwave tastes superior,

Glass is sustainable and 100% recyclable 3. Glass will not stain, fade, deteriorate, or corrode Glass has a longer shelf life than any other packaging 4. Glass conveys superior brand image Products packaged in glass are attractive and convey higher quality brand image and identity

Glass is sustainable and 100% recyclable 5. Helps clean-up the planet. Using glass rather than plastic significantly reduces landfill. It also saves energy on plastic s inefficient recycling process. And unlike that metastasizing heap of mismatched plastic containers in your kitchen cupboard, once you invest in glass storage containers, your supply pretty much stays steady. With care, you ll use your original glass containers almost indefinitely. If you break a glass container, you can recycle it without guilt: Up to 80% of all recycled glass can be reclaimed. Recycled glass uses 40% less energy than manufacturing new glass.

Glass is sustainable and 100% recyclable Cont., 5. Helps clean-up the planet. Recycling doesn t compromise glass quality or structure and no toxins are produced in it s recycling. A move to glass storage marks a raised consciousness arguably glass most valuable environmental benefit. Your investment in glass helps you move from a throw-away mindset to a more sustainable sensibility.

Glass is sustainable and 100% recyclable 6. Saves you money. Because glass is usually more expensive than plastic, at first glance, it seems a switch to glass will be more costly. But think about this: Unlike plastic, glass is pretty much a one-time investment. It actually saves you money in the long run.

No matter what type of packaging is being used, recycling it after use is always the responsible choice. However, consumers need to be aware of which packaging materials are the best for the environment, and what steps they can take to fight our Earth's pollution problem. Even something simple as using refillable glass water bottles instead of opening another bottle of water packaged in plastic can make a difference. A lot of small differences can add up to something big.

PLASTIC WASTE GENERATION / RECYCLE Plastic waste generated in the country /day 15342 ton Plastic waste collected & recycled/day 9205 ton Uncollected plastic waste/day 6137 ton

Make a Difference Presently, there is a global crisis with plastic pollution and a huge portion of that pollution can be attributed to plastic packaging.

Glass has a number of different qualities that make it the best choice for a packaging material, but perhaps none more important than its sustainability and reduced impact on the environment. Glass is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly with no loss in quality or purity. Glass recycling is a closed loop system, creating no additional waste or by-products.

Did you Know That? Americans use 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour. It is estimated that over 80% of all single-use water bottles used in the U.S. simply become "litter." For every six plastic bottles bought, only one is recycled - five are thrown away to eventually end up in landfills, or the ocean. While plastics can indeed be recycled, they degrade in quality through the recycling process, until eventually plastics can't be recycled and have to be taken to landfills. 90% of the trash in the ocean is from plastic. One million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed annually from plastic in our oceans.

Plastic choking Gir, the pride of Gujarat Every year, wildlife lovers and voluntary organizations clear tonnes of plastic littering the 36 km-long Girnar Parikrama route. However, plastic has now invaded the entire Gir sanctuary which is the last abode of Asiatic lions. In fact, around 200 km of public roads pass through the sanctuary, of which nearly 175 km is in Gir (west) division. Plastic empty water bottles and packets of snacks is strewn on both sides of the roads in the protected area. "Plastic in the forest and the sanctuary is a serious issue that affects the ecosystem. Only cleaning will not solve the problem. The government must come out with a permanent solution," said nature conservationist Revtubha Raijada, who is among the volunteers.
