Write scientific or technical reports for workplace activities Overview This unit covers the competences you need to write technical reports, in accordance with approved procedures and practices. You will be expected to identify and use relevant business and scientific or technical understanding, methods and skills to address workplace problems that are well defined but complex and non-routine. You will be expected to take responsibility for overall courses of action. You will exercise autonomy and judgement within fairly broad parameters and understand different perspectives or approaches used within the workplace. On completion of workplace activities, you will be required to show you have addressed problems that are complex and non-routine whilst normally fairly well defined. You will be expected to show you have identified, selected and used appropriate business and scientific or technical methods and skills. You will show you have initiated and used appropriate investigation to inform your actions. You will also show how you review the effectiveness and appropriateness of the methods, actions and results of your scientific or technical work. Your responsibilities will require you to comply with organisational policy and procedures for the business and scientific or technical operations undertaken. You will be responsible for courses of action, including, where relevant, responsibility for the work of others. You will also exercise autonomy and judgement for your scientific or technical activities within broad but generally well-defined parameters. Your underpinning knowledge will enable you to use practical, theoretical or technical understanding to address workplace problems that are well defined but complex and non-routine. You will know how to analyse, interpret and evaluate relevant business and scientific or technical information and ideas, and will be aware of the nature and approximate scope of the business and scientific or technical activities undertaken. You will understand different perspectives or approaches on workplace activities. You will be fully aware of any health, safety and environmental requirements, and the appropriate legislative and regulatory frameworks, applicable to your area of responsibility. You will be required to ensure that safe working practices are maintained throughout, and will understand the responsibility you owe to yourself and others in the workplace. SEMLATA4-06 1

Performance criteria You must be able to: P1 ensure that your work is carried out in accordance with workplace procedures P2 use safe practices and the appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE) where scientific or technical activities are performed P3 identify and agree the business and scientific or technical requirements of your role in the workplace P4 establish processes that deliver scientific or technical outcomes based on organisational goals and aims P5 establish the scope and purpose of the scientific or technical report to be delivered P6 determine quality and delivery issues, and the resources needed to deliver the report P7 present the report data and content in an appropriate format and structure for the reader(s) P8 implement quality checks according to the workplace procedures and policies P9 include all information that is relevant and sufficient for the scientific or technical activities and quality standards P10 technically review any third party data added to the report for quality, and, where appropriate, provide feedback to the author(s) on your observations/recommendations P11 obtain feedback on your early draft to ensure that the final report meets the stated purpose P12 follow the relevant procedures for authorisation from the appropriate people and for release of the report P13 ensure that the report is completed and issued within the agreed time limits P14 present the results of the work done to the appropriate people, in accordance with departmental and organisational procedures SEMLATA4-06 2
