The Hyde GUARDIAN Ballast Water Treatment System The Hyde GUARDIAN Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) offers an effective and reliable solution based on depth filtration and Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection. Standard systems are available for flow rates from 60 m 3 /h up to,488 m 3 /h and customized, multireactor systems up to 6,000 m 3 /h. With its flexible, modular design and ability to be skid mounted, the system can be installed in new ship constructions as well as in existing ships where retrofits are required in crowded machinery spaces. For hazardous or explosive environments, the Hyde GUARDIAN BWTS has been certified in compliance with Directive 94/9/EC of the European Parliament (ATEX). Key system components, such as the filter system and UV chamber, are approved for installation and operation in hazardous areas. UV Treatment Chamber & Central Outlet One of the smallest UV reactor footprints includes a specific number and size of UV lamps depending on total ballast water flow to be treated Disc Filter Modules Pressure rated, containing stacked filter elements Integrated Drain Connection Single connection to combine backflush drain and reactor cooling connections Control & Power Panels Operates entire system and includes LCD panel All internal wiring & connections come complete on skid system Ballast Inlet Directs water to filter modules Skid Optional configuration Alternatively, modular design allows for installation as separate components
Filtration Makes a Difference Filter System Hyde Marine originally selected a unique stackeddisc filtration system as the standard for the Hyde GUARDIAN BWTS. The filter is ideal for seawater applications and will deliver reliable operation over the life of the ship. Combines the performance and efficiency of a depth filter with reliable automatic backflushing Corrosionfree materials of construction Low pressure drop Ability to handle heavy sediment loading Low maintenance requirements The StackedDisc Filter Design Filter elements comprised of nylon discs stacked on a piston spine and compressed by a spring Discs have a precise pattern of diagonal grooves of a specific micron size, formed in opposite directions, top and bottom When discs are tightly compressed, intersections of the grooves form a three dimensional filter matrix During ballasting, sea water flows between the discs into the core, while contaminants are captured both on the surface of the elements and at thousands of stopping points within each filter Resulting depth filtration increases removal efficiency and solids holding capacity while maintaining low pressure drop and high average flow rate
Leave Nothing with UV Disinfection The Hyde GUARDIAN BWTS uses high intensity ultraviolet (UV) treatment for disinfection. The UV chamber is carefully designed for minimum pressure drop, optimum dose distribution, and compatibility with the marine operating environment. UV dosage results from a combination of lamp power, flow path, and exposure time. The flow characteristics through the Guardian UV chamber are optimized to make best use of the UV power provided. UV Disinfection Advantages: Automatic operation with very little crew attention Effective not affected by water salinity, temperature, or hold time in the ballast tank 00% safe without side effects Organisms cannot build resistance against UV No increased corrosion risk as with chemical oxidants No transportation, storage, or handling of chemicals No danger of overdosing or release of residual disinfectant No known toxic or significant nontoxic byproducts The UV Disinfection Solution The medium pressure UV lamps in the Hyde GUARDIAN system produce a polychromatic output across the entire germicidal spectrum versus the monochromatic output achieved with low pressure UV lamps. The Guardian UV lamps have an expected service life of 5,000+ operating hours which allows for hundreds of typical ballasting cycles. Hyde Marine systems in service for over 0 years have not experienced issues with lamp breakage. Treatment Chamber The Hyde GUARDIAN UV system includes a specific number and size of UV lamps depending on the ballast water flow to be treated. These lamps are housed in high quality quartz sleeves mounted perpendicular to the flow in the corrosion resistant treatment chamber. The system employs an automatic wiping mechanism to keep deposits from accumulating on the sleeves. Additionally, each UV reactor contains a temperature sensor, a UV intensity sensor, air relief valves, and a drain. The reactor chamber has an inspection and access hatch for routine checks and maintenance of reactor internals.
Approved! A Company of Firsts Hyde Marine was in the first group of companies to receive Alternative Management System (AMS) approval from the U.S. Coast Guard on April 5, 03. Additionally, the Hyde GUARDIAN BWTS was among the first to receive IMO Type Approval from Lloyd s Register on behalf of the U.K. Maritime and Coast Guard Agency (MCA) in April 009. Hyde Marine installed one of the first BWTS aboard a ship, which subsequently was the first BWTS accepted into the U.S. Coast Guard s Shipboard Technology Evaluation Program (STEP). Calgon Carbon s UV Technologies Division and Hyde Marine received ISO 900:008 accreditation from the registrar Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and the ANAB National Accreditation Board in 00.
