Swatchh Bharat Mission Management of SCF through Cement Kiln Co-processing Issues and Way Forward 2014

About Geocycle For a zero-waste future Geocycle is the waste management brand of LafargeHolcim. ACC Limited and Ambuja Cements Limited being group companies of LH extend waste management services under this brand. We, at Geocycle, are committed to the Clean India Initiative

SWM Rules 2016 For Sustainable managent of MSW MSW Kitchen waste/organics Construction and Demolition waste Glass Composting/(Biomethantion) Recycling Metals Segregated Combustible Fraction (SCF) RDF Co-processing / (WTE) Inert Material Filling low lying areas 3

Can it be achieved? 1. Madukkarai Clean & Green Drive Video 2. Goa MSW treatment project by SFC 4

We are collaborating with different municipalities for managing SCF from MSW - > 500 TPD Madukkarai town Few Wards of Coimbatore Several Municipalities in Himachal Pradesh Panjim & other locations from Goa Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Chennai Municipal Corporation, Jaipur Municipal Corporation Katni Municipal Corporation, Jabalpur Municipal Corporation Bangalore Municipal Corporation Varanasi Municipal Corporation Raipur Municipal Corporation We are also working with Municipalities to remediate the existing MSW dump yards 5

There is huge resource recovery opportunity from MSW! > 60 Mio TPA ~15-20 Mio TPA Compost >5-6 Mio TPA Recyclables >8-10 Mio TPA RDF 6

Status on resource recovery Management of wet fractions to compost / biogas is well defined and practiced Recyclables have good market response. What is produced as RDF is not RDF. It is Segregated Combustible Fraction (SCF). This is fine for WTE but not for co-processing. There is no defined quality specification of RDF that is aligned to co-processing requirements and hence, it does not get produced in MSW processing plants. 7

SRF What would be suitable for Cement Industry Parameter Limits Particle size <50 mm / <20 mm Calorific value 16-20 MJ / KG Ash <20% Moisture <15 per cent w/w Chlorine <0.8 per cent w/w Sulphur <0.5 per cent w/w 8

Resource Recovery Efficiency of SCF 1. Power generation through Waste to Energy (WTE) <30% energy recovery; 0% Material Recovery 2. Co-processing in cement kilns by converting SCF to RDF >80% energy recovery 100% material recovery 9

Different Models of integrating co-processing option Third Party with support from ULB s Third Party /cement Plant MSW from Source Collection from Source Segregation Combustible fraction Recyclables Bio-degradable fraction Pre-processing plant Composting RDF Fluff Model 1 Model 2 QA / QC Pre- Processing Model 3 Co-processing Cement Plants 10

Recommendations for better resource recovery MSW is wealth for sure! Its proper management Conserves natural resources Ensures better environment. MSW management is a cost and it needs to be spent today to enjoy this wealth tomorrow! MSW business model needs to be defined and supported with a proper policy framework that ensures its operation in a sustained mode. 11

Recommendations for better resource recovery Separate contracts for Street sweeping, drains cleaning, waste transportation & disposal Waste collection from commercial and industrial establishments dry and wet separately Waste collection from house holds in wet, dry & hazardous waste fractions. Separate transportation on different days and in different direction Wet fraction for composting Dry fractions for recycling and conversion to SRF / RDF Hazardous for treatment in appropriate facilities. 12

Recommendations for better resource recovery Promote Production of RDF from SCF in the MSW projects SCF CV : upto 4000 Cal / gm!! Ash :?? Moisture : upto 60% Chloride :?? Sulfur :?? To be finalised in consultation with the cement plant for winwin approach RDF CV : Min 3500 (+/- 10%) Cal / gm Ash : <20% Moisture : < 15% Chloride : < 0.6% 13

We are very grateful to you!!! Thanks
