Revised 12/14/2015 ODYSSEYLUXURY VINYL INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY, BEFORE YOU BEGIN INSTALLATION. IMPROPER INSTALLATION WILL VOID WARRANTY. Luxury Vinyl is a premium vinyl flooring designed to be fully adhered to the floor in residential interior applications. FOR BEST VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF YOUR FLOOR This flooring replicates the look of a natural product which has natural variations in color and texture. For best visual effect, shuffle planks from several cartons and do not install similar boards next to one another. PRE-INSTALLATION JOBSITE REQUIREMENTS Carefully examine the flooring prior to installation for colors, finish and quality. Ensure adequate lighting for proper inspection. If flooring is not acceptable, contact your supplier immediately and arrange for replacement. The factory cannot accept responsibility for flooring installed with visible defects. Prior to installation of any flooring, the installer must ensure that the jobsite and subfloor meet the requirements of these instructions. The factory is not responsible for flooring failure resulting from unsatisfactory jobsite and/or subfloor conditions. Flooring should be one of the last items installed in any new construction or remodel project. ACCLIMATION Site conditions must be stable and climate controlled for a minimum of one (1) week prior to installation. Ensure flooring, substrate and adhesive are fully acclimated prior to installation at the same temperature and relative humidity expected during normal use, between 65-85 F with a relative humidity no greater than 65%. Ensure substrate, flooring, and adhesive are fully acclimated to these conditions for a minimum of 48 hours prior to installation. To acclimate, remove planks from cartons and separate into small piles of 5-10 planks each. Page 1 IMPORTANT ENVIRONMENT CONDITIONS *Installation of flooring in areas of prolonged direct sunlight can cause plank discoloration and plank expansion. It is recommended that appropriate window coverings be used in these areas.* SUBFLOOR All subfloors should be inspected prior to installation. All subfloors must be smooth, clean, dry, structurally sound, and free of dust, dirt, oil, wax, paint or any other contaminant that would inhibit a good bond. Use a good quality Portland Cement-based patching compound to fill or smooth any irregularities that could show through the new flooring. Concrete on or above grade must be free of moisture or high alkalinity and be protected by a moisture barrier installed at the time of construction. A concrete slab should be cured a minimum of 90 days before performing moisture tests prior to the installation of your new flooring. These time periods are an absolute minimum and the concrete may require additional drying time dependent upon local environmental conditions. Concrete subfloors with a ph of 9 or greater will not be acceptable to install your new floor. The subfloor must be brought to a neutral ph level before beginning your installation. If you are installing over Gypcrete, the subfloor must first be sealed using sealant supplied by manufacturer of Gypcrete, or other approved latex sealer. All wood subfloors shall have at least 18 of well-ventilated space below. The ground under crawl spaces must be covered with 6mil polyethylene sheeting to reduce moisture vapor transmission. Wood floors must be double construction or equivalent, with a minimum thickness of 1, such as APA Underlayment Grade Plywood without voids, and with a fully sanded face. Also acceptable, is ACCU-PLY Underlay-
ment by Capitol U.S.A. or similar. If you are installing flooring over one layer of existing noncushioned floor covering, it should be well adhered to the subfloor, or scraped off before installing your new flooring. The use of a good quality embossing leveler to fill in the surface texture of the existing floor is required. Otherwise, the profile of the existing floor will telegraph through the new flooring and adhesive may not cure correctly. SUBFLOOR FLATNESS & INTEGRITY Wood floors must be flat, clean, dry, structurally sound, free of squeaks and free of protruding fasteners. The subfloor should be flat to within 1/8 in 10 foot radius. If peaks or valleys in the subfloor exceed the tolerances specified above, sand down the high spots and fill the low spots with a leveling compound or other material approved for use under wood flooring. However, it is the builder s or general contractor s responsibility to provide the woodflooring contractor with a subfloor that is with the tolerances listed above. MOISTURE TESTING It is the contractor s as well as the installer s responsibility to test all concrete substrates, both new and old, for moisture content to determine if it is sufficiently dry to install flooring. Moisture in a concrete substrate should be tested according to ASTM F 1869-98 (Calcium Chloride Moisture Test using the Quantitative Method) Moisture levels should never exceed 5lbs per 1000 sf per 24 hour period or ASTM F 2170-2 (Standard Test Method for Determining Relative Humidity in Concrete Floor Slabs Using in situ Probes.) Relative humidity levels should never exceed 75%. LAYOUT Prior to installation, inspect planks in daylight for visible faults/damage. Check if subfloors/site conditions comply with the specifications described in these instructions. If you are not satisfied do not install, and contact your supplier. Best results are obtained by installing the floor from the center of the room. Measure and mark at the center of each end wall. Connect these center points with a chalk line. Figure 1, A and B Locate the center and establish a line at a right angle to the existing line, it is best to use a carpenters square. Figure 1, C and D Divide the length between the walls by the width of the planks. If less than one half, a plank will be installed at the border it will be necessary to adjust your chalk lines. It is Page 2 best to install planks in a pyramid fashion Figure 2 or row by row fashion Figure 3. When laying plank it is important to ensure that plank edges are firmly butted together, with no gaps and no overlaps. Always butt factory edges together, do not butt cut edges together. Always stagger end joint bay a minimum of 8, a random staggering will provide best results. *Important Note: Always work from several boxes of flooring material and mix planks to ensure optimum visual diversity. It is recommended that the planks be dry fit prior to application of adhesive for optimum visual diversity. a Figure 21 a Figure 2 a Figure 3 CUTTING Flooring can be easily cut using a score and snap cutting method. Score the top surface with a sharp utility knife; bend flooring to break at the score line. When cutting c d c d c d b b b
around door jambs, pipes or other extrusion a paper pattern is recommended. It is recommended that door jambs be undercut to allow material to slide underneath. ADHESIVE Use a premium adhesive designed for the installation of solid vinyl plank. Adhesive should be a transitional pressure sensitive with sufficient bond strength for vinyl plank. Always follow adhesive manufacturer s recommendations following proper spread rate and open time. When removing dried adhesive from the surface it is important to always test the cleaner on a scrap piece of material. WF Taylor #9 solvent is recommended. When finished applying adhesive to flooring, roll with a 100 pound roller to ensure full adhesion. RADIANT HEAT (HYDRO-BASED SYSTEMS) Flooring can be installed over radiant heat if the following guidelines are followed: Complete system must be operational for a minimum of one week. System should be turned off 72 hours prior to installation of flooring and remain off 72 hours after installation is complete. Turn system back on to its normal room temperature setting. The subfloor surface must never exceed 80 F throughout the life of the floor. Flooring and adhesive should never come in direct contact with heating system. All other standard installation instructions apply. INSTALLATION Apply WF Taylor 2091 or WF Taylor 2098 adhesive using a 1/16 x 1/16 x 1/16 square notch trowel. Allow enough open (flash time) for the adhesive to become tacky to the touch but not transfer to your finger. More open time is required over non-porous substrates. Appropriate open time is also dependent on climate conditions. Lay plank into adhesive and roll with a flooring roller to ensure even and adequate bonding. Plank may be cut using the score and snap method. Score the plank with a sharp utility knife and bend back to snap. Planks may also be cut with a cutter designed for vinyl flooring. Cut edges should always be against a wall, factory edges should be butted together in all field areas. Page 3 Clean any adhesive residue with WF Taylor #09 cleaner or mineral spirits. Always test cleaner on a scrap of flooring; some solvents can discolor the plank surface. PROTECTION AND MAINTENANCE Furniture should be moved onto the newly installed floor using an appliance hand truck over hardboard runways. Avoid exposure to long periods of direct sunlight. Close blinds or drapes during peak sunlight hours. Floor covering subjected to excessive heat and light is subject to thermal degradation. Use appropriate precautions to minimize potential effects on the floor covering. Oil or petroleum-based products can result in surface staining. Do not track asphalt-driveway sealer or automobile-oil drips onto the vinyl floor covering. Use non-staining mats. Rubber may discolor the floor. Frequently moved furniture should be equipped with felt pads to avoid scratching the floor. Heavy furniture and appliances should be equipped with non-staining large surface floor protectors. Furniture with castors or wheels must be easy swiveling, large surface non-staining and suitable for resilient floors. DO NOT use ball type castors as they can damage the floor. Use floor protectors under furniture. Use walk off mats at entrances to prevent dirt and grit from being tracked on to the floor. Sweep or vacuum the floor regularly to remove loose dirt. DO NOT use vacuums that use a beater bar or turn beater bar off. DO NOT use electric brooms with hard plastic bottoms with no padding., damp mop as needed using clean water and a diluted floor cleaner. DO NOT use harsh cleaners or chemicals on the floor. DO NOT use abrasive scrubbing tools. DO NOT use detergents, abrasive cleaners or mop and shine products. Vinyl Flooring, like other types of smooth floors, may become slippery when wet. Allow time for floor to dry after washing. Immediately wipe up wet areas from spills, foreign substances or wet feet. Contact your flooring retailer with questions or concerns regarding your flooring purchase.
