Infrastructure Efficiency Yields Significant Cost Savings Executive Summary Each year, the amount of data that businesses need to manage grows at an astounding rate 1. The explosive growth of data presents a costly challenge to businesses who must continue to scale their big data infrastructures to keep pace with the speed of new data creation. Whether the data resides on-premises or in the cloud, the rising costs to maintain a robust infrastructure threaten to override the value derived from big data insights. Cancun Systems offers customers an in-memory SDML (software-defined memory lake) platform that not only delivers massive speed and agility, but also allows companies to achieve new levels of infrastructure efficiency and cost savings, whether deployed on-premises or in the cloud. INCREASED EFFICIENCY CUTS INFRASTRUCTURE SPEND Cancun demonstrated the ability to do the same job with significantly less infrastructure, which can lead to a lot of efficiency and cost savings for us and our customers. David Vennergrund Director, Data Science CSRA Cancun MemoryLake TM : An In-Memory Software Platform for Accelerated Insights Cancun s MemoryLake software platform delivers an SDML that enables applications to run up to 10X faster, allowing customers to accelerate time to insights and enjoy tremendous infrastrucutre efficiencies. Cancun s MemoryLake provides immediate benefits in three areas: Faster time to Insights: By pooling and virtualizing available memory and storage resources within or across nodes, Cancun can create a software-defined memory lake. In-memory applications like Spark can now run significantly faster by accelerating and pipelining applications at memory speed, enabling workflows to complete in a fraction of the time. Infrastructure Efficiency and Savings: Whether deployed on-premises or in the cloud, Cancun s MemoryLake TM software delivers unprecedented infrastructure efficiency. Existing build-outs can run more jobs and query more data without having to purchase additional infrastructure. New build-outs only require a fraction of the expected infrastructure. For cloud deployments, customers can experience both faster insights and immediate savings because they are able to complete jobs and decommission clusters much faster. Deployment Simplicity and Flexibility: Cancun enables businesses to deploy MemoryLake TM software in private, public, or hybrid cloud environments, and ingest data directly from various sources (e.g. HDFS, NAS, cloud object stores) for richer insights. Installation is simple and takes only minutes. And deployment is frictionless, requiring no changes to application code or underlying infrastructures. 1 How Much Data is Produced Every Day? On-Premise Deployments: Cancun MemoryLake TM provides more than 30% infrastructure savings The key pain point that is voiced by a great majority of Big Data implementers is performance. With workloads getting more complex and with the co-location of heterogeneous workloads on the same cluster, this performance problem gets greatly magnified. The traditional answer to address these performance issues has been to throw more hardware at them.. Figure 2 shows a typical Big Data deployment with N nodes. To increase job performance, the traditional path is to add more nodes to gain parallelism. Cancun offers a better alternative with SDML (Software Defined Memory Lake). By speeding up in-memory computation, SDML accelerates workloads without having to add more nodes. With the increase in performance, capacity is freed up to add more workloads or reduce CAPEX/OPEX expenditure and realize savings in less servers, reduced data center footprint and energy costs. The software can be deployed in a greenfield or brownfield environment without any change to existing application code in a non-intrusive manner. Figure 2 Cancun in On-prem Deployment Scenario Companies that deploy the Cancun s MemoryLake TM platform can achieve a 32 percent cost savings on Big Data infrastructure from day 1 and a 47% return on investment.

Cloud Deployments: Cancun MemoryLake TM provides more than 50% in cloud savings In the cloud, customer pays for the usage of resources. With cancun SDML, workloads are significantly accelerated thereby reducing IaaS expenses. For example, if a workload takes 4 hours then the customer pays IaaS charges for 4 hours. With Cancun, if the job is accelerated by 4x then the same job completes in 1 hour thereby yielding significant cost savings. Cancun software can be deployed in dedicated EC2 compute instances or in ephemeral EMR instances. The data can reside in HDFS or S3. Figure 4 Cancun deployment in Cloud In figure 5, a range of savings are shown. For example, a 4x acceleration reduces IaaS expenses by 75%. After adding Cancun expenses, customer enjoys a net savings of 55%.

With Cancun s MemoryLake TM, customers not only benefit from a massive boost in speed and agility, they are also able to add new initiatives and workloads to existing clusters for greater efficiency, or reduce their infrastructure footprint, on-premises or in the cloud, for immediate cost savings and significant ROI.
