Technical Data Sheet ACUMER 9400 High-Performance Dispersant for Various Minerals Description ACUMER 9400 high-performance mining polymer is a polycarboxylate dispersant. ACUMER 9400 mining polymer allows for the lowest viscosities in high-solids kaolin slurries, and works well with all clay types under the most extreme conditions. At elevated temperature, ACUMER 9400 polymer outperforms most commercially available clay dispersants. Typical Properties ACUMER 9400 Result Appearance Slightly viscous, golden colored solution polymer Chemical nature Acrylic homopolymer Grade Sodium salt Molecular weight 3,000 4,000 Total solids (%) ~ 42 ph 7 Viscosity Brookfield, mpa.s/cps @ 25 C) ~ 600 These properties are typical but do not constitute specifications. Use and Properties ACUMER 9400 products (9400, 9410, 9420, and 9460) are a family of water-soluble polymers supplied in water. Some ph versions are available in only selected geographical regions. Check with your local Dow representative for the availability. ACUMER ph 9410 4 9460 5.5 9400 7 9420 8 ACUMER 9400 HS is a high-solids version (47.5) of ACUMER 9400, available only in Latin America Region. This polymer is typically used to disperse and stabilize high solids mineral slurries which include calcium carbonate (pcc, gcc), kaolin clay, talc, titanium dioxide, lime and aluminum hydroxide. This polymer is one of the most widely used mineral dispersants globally. Page 1 of 7

ACUMER 9400 polymer was compared at equal concentrations to ACUMER 9141 polymer. The viscosity curves above show that ACUMER 9400 high-performance dispersant has better performance than ACUMER 9141 at 73.5% solids with lower viscosity, at typical dosages. Four weeks stability test results are reported in Graphs III and IV below. Page 3 of 7
No phase separation nor sedimentation was observed in stagnant or mixed slurries after 4 weeks. 73.5% kaolin slurries with ACUMER 9400 high-performance dispersant showed good stability after 4 weeks. Page 4 of 7
Ceramic Applications Replacement for Phosphates (STPP) Performance ACUMER dispersants benefit most ceramic applications whether it be kaolin slurries, ball clay slurries, or ceramic slip grinding and dispersion. ACUMER dispersants aid in: wettability slip viscosity grinding slip stability Figures 1 and 2 show the relationship of slip viscosity versus slip solids for two ceramic tile manufacturers. Page 5 of 7
Conclusion: In both cases, the ACUMER polymers outperformed STPP even at the higher STPP dosage. The rapidly increasing cost of phosphates make the ACUMER polymer option even more attractive. Figure 3 shows the relationship of specific gravity to solids for a typical ceramic slip. The ceramic mix was wet ground to 5% retained on 200 mesh screen. This relationship held for all dispersants tested on this particular slip. Conclusion: As the slip solids increase, the slurry density increases. Page 6 of 7
