Paper Handling and Storage Paper is manufactured to tightly controlled moisture specifications based on the intended end use of the paper. Changes in temperature and humidity have a significant effect on paper. The amount of water vapor present in the air varies greatly depending on geography, season, climate, time of day and the weather. Therefore certain precautions should be taken to insure optimum performance of the paper. Recommendations: Paper received from truck or unconditioned warehouse should be allowed to reach room temperature before it is unwrapped. The time required to do this depends upon the season and size or volume of the skid, roll or carton. Keep paper wrapped until ready to load into the printer or press. Keep paper off damp concrete or basement floors. Do not store paper near heating units or in front of ventilation units. If a wrapper is torn or if only part of a package is to be used, reseal the wrapper to prevent moisture penetration. The environment around the printing equipment should provide stable temperature and relative humidity conditions. Controlled pressrooms typically maintain moisture between 35-55% relative humidity and temperature around 68-76 F. Moisture Related Problems: Paper fibers swell or shrink as they take on or give up moisture respectively. The effects of moisture gain or loss from exposure to ambient air conditions may be any of the following: Tight or bowed edges caused by moisture loss. Wavy edges caused by moisture gain. Static and feeding problems caused by extremely low moisture levels. 6
Paper Handling and Storage Conditioning Recommendations: Optimal Conditions Temperature: 68 76 F [20 24 C] Humidity: 35-55% Moisture Content: 4.5% - 4.9% target GATF Conditioning Recommendations Paper should be allowed to reach pressroom temperature BEFORE removing protective wrapping. This helps prevent condensation of mo on the paper. DURATION OF CONDITIONING depends on the volume of paper and the temperature difference between the paper and pressroom. The volume of one pallet of 8 ½ X 11 is about 46 cubic feet. Based on this volume, approximate conditioning time required is as follows Temperature Difference (degrees F) 10 20 30 40 50 60 Conditioning Time (hours) 14 26 38 54 75 109 For a 35 roll, 40 O.D. X 3 core, volume is about 30 cubic feet and requires about 1/3 less conditioning time than above. Paper is designed to be stable in a 45-55% RH environment at 72 o F. Room Temperature Below Recommended RH Ideal Conditions Tolerable Conditions Above Recommended RH 65o F <50% RH 57-69% RH 70-75% RH >75% RH 72o F <38% RH 45-55% RH 56-59% RH >59% RH 85o F <26% RH 29-35% RH 36-38% RH >38% RH Continuous Forms Product Guide 7
Environmental Certifications We believe the best way to assure that our forests, manufacturing and distribution operations are managed in a responsible, sustainable and transparent manner is through certification by internationally recognized third-party organizations. Rigorous independent scrutiny ensures integrity in the chain-of-custody from the forest floor to the market. Look for Forest Stewardship Council (FSC ) certified products. FSC Chain-of-Custody certification is the best way to ensure that forests will be productive for generations to come. Unless otherwise marked, all continuous forms (except carbonless) contain fiber that meets the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI ) Certified Sourcing Standard. SFI Certified Sourcing indicates the procurement practices of a certified facility are responsible, and that the raw material in their supply chain comes from non-controversial sources. General Environmental Information Environmental Policy We will conduct business in a manner that conserves resources and constantly reduces our environmental footprint. We seek continual improvement in our environmental performance by setting, reviewing and updating environmental goals. Fiber Use and Sourcing We aim to be the preferred supplier of environmentally sound products to our customers. We strive to leave the smallest possible footprint in the forest. For products that require virgin fiber, we strive to ensure that this fiber originates from sustainable forests. For other products, we will use as much recycled fiber as possible, depending on customer needs, technical requirements, availability and affordability. Forest Policy We will strive for leadership in forest management by adhering to sustainable forest principles on all lands owned by or licensed to us and by preferring suppliers with like principles. Occupational Health and Safety Policy We will conduct business in a manner that protects the health and safety of our employees. We seek continual improvement in our Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) management practices and performance by setting, reviewing and updating OH&S goals and through close cooperation between management, employees and unions, where applicable. 8
