Supply, construction, and commissioning Products, systems, and turnkey solutions A reliable and sustainable supply for municipalities From electricity to natural gas, from drinking water to district heating, and also public transportation Siemens supports you in any task. We combine distribution network technologies into an intelligent overall solution all from a single source. In a modern society, municipalities (municipal utilities) are the foundation of an efficient, environmentally friendly infrastructure whether they re providing electricity, natural gas, drinking water, district heating, street lighting, waste recycling, waste disposal, or public transportation. In enabling sustainable growth in cities, the key to success lies in continuously adapting structures to changing requirements because the top priority is to always ensure a reliable and economical supply of those commodities. At the same time, municipalities and distribution system operators (DSOs) are challenged by fundamental changes in their business environments. Many power grids today are not designed to handle the constantly growing energy demand caused by increasing urbanization. Above all, the enormous fluctuations in electricity supplied by renewable energy sources are causing problems, because the infeed depends on factors like the weather and is therefore variable. Power distribution companies are forced to modernize or expand their network infrastructure to ensure their future viability. Existing infrastructure needs to be transformed into smart grids that can integrate decentralized power generation, balance fluctuations from renewables, and ensure power quality as well as a reliable and economical supply. Suppliers of multiple commodities who provide e.g. water or gas besides power (so called multi-utilities) are additionally challenged to generate synergies within their automation and control solutions and to reduce costs and complexity. Siemens is uniquely positioned to support you in installing, expanding, and maintaining a high-performing, reliable, and future-proof network infrastructure. Cities and urban areas around the globe rely on our comprehensive experience and technological expertise. Our end-to-end portfolio enables you to cope with both today s and tomorrow s challenges. We combine distribution network technologies into an intelligent overall solution all from a single source. Power Distribution 1 Planning, building, expanding, and maintaining an intelligent distribution network s infrastructure to cope with the changes in a modern society is a challenge for municipalities and DSOs. Intelligent substations, including products like smart switchgear, transformers, distribution, and feeder automation solutions, enable new applications to increase the distribution reliability reliability. IT solutions help to balance supply and demand, and can also create new business models, even for smaller municipalities. Power Generation Municipalities today are already considering investing in their own power generation systems for a variety of reasons: changes in regulations, the desire for more energy independence, and the opportunity to enter into the lucrative power generation market. Siemens is a leading player that can deliver the entire range of generation systems, from fossil to CHP (combined heat power), wasteto-power, and renewables, including grid integration. Water and Wastewater Renewables 3 Electricity from renewables such as wind, sun, biomass, and geothermal sources stands for sustainable power generation without CO emissions. Siemens not only manages the infeed of electricity into existing grids, it also offers solutions like microgrids and energy storage systems to ensure that sufficient electricity is always available to customers for example, even when the wind isn t blowing. Smart Grid Applications 4 Distributed power generation and the integration of renewables create challenges for existing grid infrastructure, because the power flow changes directions and magnitudes in a highly dynamic way. As more and more municipalities participate in decentralized generation, they need to start actively managing distribution. Siemens offers products and solutions for microgrids, energy storage, load management, and virtual power plant applications. With the Smart Grid Compass, we also provide consulting services that help you define and implement your smart grid strategy step by step. Smart Grid Services 5 To ensure the high availability and efficient operation of the grid infrastructure, operators need to continuously measure, monitor, analyze, maintain, and modernize their grid installations. Siemens supports you in the areas of network consulting, grid monitoring and diagnostics, smart metering and meter data management, maintenance, and asset performance management throughout the grid s entire lifecycle. Water and Wastewater Clean drinking water is a basic need in any community. Water production, drinking water treatment, and distribution as well as the water sewage are major tasks for any municipality. Siemens helps water utilities to run, control, and automate their facilities. We offer a modular water management system that supports the operation of water transport and supply systems, including identifying and locating leaks as well as simulating network behavior. Gas Distribution 7 Domestic gas is used as an efficient, ecofriendly energy source for residential heating and cooking, and municipalities are required to ensure a reliable and safe supply. Siemens offers solutions for powering gas facilities, managing gas distribution, reliable forecasting, and after-the-fact analysis. Our load management system ensures the optimal use of gas purchases and takes dispatchable storage, loads, and own generation into account while ensuring an uninterrupted supply. District Heating and Cooling Municipal utilities can provide heat or hot water for example, from CHP plants for district heating and to industrial users for an efficient and environment-friendly supply of heat. Hot water can also be used in absorption chillers for district cooling (e.g. for hospitals or shopping malls). Siemens can provide solutions for heat generation as well as for an intelligent distribution management system. Waste Disposal / Recycling 9 The management of waste is a big challenge for cities and municipalities. Siemens offers power supply solutions, drives, and automation equipment for waste disposal or recycling plants as well as waste-to-energy solutions. Utilities Control Centers 10 In their efforts to provide an even more efficient and economical supply of power, gas, water, and district heating, municipal utilities are interested in creating central and standardized control centers, where the entire supply and distribution system can be managed and operated in the same way, reducing construction and operating costs. With Spectrum Power, Siemens offers a wide range of features: advanced network control, including alarm management; demand-side management with load management, supply management, water, load and consumption forecast; network analysis, fault and outage management, fault location, isolation and service restoration; warnings of potential shortages, management of storage resources, and more. 1 Street Lighting Transportation Infrastructure 11 Designing efficient and well-organized public transportation and traffic management systems is a major task for urban planners. Siemens offers a comprehensive portfolio that comprises everything from trams and metros including rail electrification and automation to infrastructure for e-vehicles and intelligent traffic control systems to manage the ever-increasing traffic in cities. Street Lighting 1 An extensive street lighting system increases traffic safety and the sense of wellbeing and security for members of the community. Siemens provides smart and efficient street lighting systems with energy- saving outdoor lights that operate depending on data like time of day, weather, traffic, or distribution grid conditions. Our solution also offers real-time monitoring of the street lighting grid, prolongs bulb lifetime, and indicates when service is needed.

Shaping the future with a trusted partner Four examples of how to enhance distribution networks with Siemens from a comprehensive range of services and solutions Consulting Virtual Power Plant Intelligent Compact Substation Multi-Utility Control Center Today s networks will have to be transformed into more intelligent grids. This raises questions such as: What is the optimal network structure? What actions should be taken with the available resources, in what time frame, and what benefits will result? Siemens offers high-quality consultancy services and tools based on proven knowledge from a passionate team of experts. Our Smart Grid Compass helps you define and execute your company s smart grid strategy step by step. We develop customized network structures and smart grid concepts with the goal of securing supply under new conditions from integrating renewable energy sources to applying innovative technologies like storage devices and electric vehicles. Because Siemens focuses on the system as a whole, both the developed network concept and system architecture will meet all your technical, economic, and environmental requirements. The paradigm shift is progressing at full speed. With renewables on the rise, many decentralized generation and storage facilities are replacing the small number of centralized ones. How can you manage to balance power at short notice, prevent grid bottlenecks, and trade at energy exchanges? In a Virtual Power Plant, all decentralized facilities are networked by a central control entity. Like a real power plant, our decentralized energy management system (DEMS) uses current information on weather, energy price and demand to predict generation and consumption. It then generates optimized schedules that include all network participants, and with this optimized power management you have access to energy markets and price benefits from scale effects. You minimize your generation and operational costs and balance fluctuations by optimizing distributed energy sources. And you can now capitalize on new, attractive market opportunities even for small-scale distributed generation. With the rapid increase in distributed energy sources, fluctuating infeed can compromise the stability of the distribution grid. Quickly balancing out effects such as bidirectional power flow, load and voltage fluctuations in the distribution grid becomes a key challenge. Siemens helps you build intelligent compact substations including switchgear, adaptable transformers, automation and protection devices with remote control that can monitor and manage the distribution grid on the low and medium voltage side. Thus, overload of grid components can be avoided at an early stage. Voltage stability can be ensured e.g. by sending a target value to the decentralized energy sources. You can easily integrate decentralized energy sources into your distribution grid, avoiding the extension of your grid capacity. This ensures a stable grid with reduced outages at the same time. Communities and industries both count on the electricity, gas, water, and district heating supply. Growing demand, increasing environmental awareness, and changes in regulations create new challenges. You therefore need future-oriented solutions for accurate planning, increased supply efficiency, and optimized resource utilization. Siemens helps you manage all commodities with a single control center system, Spectrum Power. It offers high planning reliability and increased supply quality and stability with load prediction functionality and demand-side management. With advanced applications like leakage detection and reservoir management, you can utilize your assets and contracts more efficiently. You will experience high investment security, increased planning and supply quality with a modern, multifunctional and variable control center for all your commodities. At the same time, you can decrease your operational and maintenance cost. 9
