WLD ISSUES: Development in Africa ESSAY 1: Factor X affects African development more than any other. Discuss.

Factors Affecting African Development: SOCIAL POLITICAL Health Education Poor Governance Food And Water Shortages WAR & Conflict ECONOMIC DEBT Trade Terms & Cash Crops

Cause 3: Food And Water Shortages Hinders Africa Development FOOD Food & Water Are A Essential Component Of A Developed Country WHY? WATER

Factor 3: Food And Water Shortages Hinders Africa Development There Are Many Different Reasons Why Countries Face Food Shortages: DROUGHT FLOODS LACK OF IRRIGATION & FERTILLISERS LOCUSTS CONFLICT & REFUGEES EFFECTS OF DISEASE

Factor 3: Food And Water Shortages Hinders Africa Development Food shortages & hunger are usually the first things people associate when they think of Africa However in reality most children do have enough to eat - although there are still large numbers who do not There are many causes of shortages: natural causes e.g. drought, as well as manmade problems e.g. refugees caused by conflict, that contribute to the food and water shortages in Africa This will become more of a problem as the climate changes e.g. Kenya = 3.5 degrees hotter now than it as 100 years ago! This will have a major long term effect on Africa as farmers will find it harder to work the land, grow crops and in turn will cause unemployment & famine

Factor 3: Food And Water Shortages Hinders Africa Development A lack of clean water is one of the most pressing issues in many parts of Africa Over the whole continent only about half of the population has access to clean water For many in rural areas rivers and lakes are the only source of water - these are affected seasonally WATER The average distance walked by women in Africa in search of water in 2002 was over 3 miles a day Fetching water itself can be dangerous many children have drown in the fast flowing rivers & women face sexual assault & animal attacks There is still no guarantee of finding water & some people have to make do with drinking water form a dirty pond!

Factor 3: Food And Water Shortages Hinders Africa Development How Does A Lack Of Water Affect Africa? WATER This will also be shared by animals & worse running stream water carries mud and other debris including, after heavy rain, human excrement Access to water is better in urban areas (towns & cities) however there is little sanitation so sewage pollutes water supplies Zimbabwe 2008 saw a major cholera outbreak In developing countries, about 80% of illnesses are linked to poor water and sanitation conditions! Clean water supplies affects the development of Africa in a number of ways: 1. If there was less illness from the poor water supplies more work could be done 2. Less time would be wasted on collecting water = more work done 3. Less illness = more government resources & aid money spent elsewhere

Factor 3: Food And Water Shortages Hinders Africa Development Africa's population has been increasing rapidly - women in sub-saharan Africa will give birth to an average of 5.2 children in her lifetime - this rapid growth has increased poverty and hunger for families FOOD In Sub-Saharan Africa 28% of children under 5 are underweight this is higher in some regions such as 47% in Ethiopia Of all the children underweight in the continent around 37% live in Nigeria and Ethiopia these are some of the most affect countries However other countries are badly effected as well e.g. child mortality associated with under nutrition has reduced Malawi's workforce by 10.7%! Malnutrition can affect a child s physical & mental development to be affected & can make children more susceptible to disease

Factor 3: Food And Water Shortages Hinders Africa Development FOOD In order to get the most out of education & concentrate children need to be fed Those living in rural areas (countryside) are more likely to be underweight 31% compared to 20% in urban areas This is due to many issues: poor governance; mismanaging food supplies & poor transport infrastructure There has only been a 2% improvement between 1990 and 2004 in the number of underweight children The future predicts a worsening of problems climate change means less rain fall & less crops will grow The 2015 harvest forecast states that 950,000 metric tons of maize will be harvested, far less than the 1.8 million metric tons Zimbabwe's people need this is due to lack of rain

Factor 3: Food And Water Shortages Hinders Africa Development CONSEQUENCES OF ON AFRICA: In developing countries, about 80% of illnesses are linked to poor water and sanitation conditions! The average distance walked by women in Africa in search of water in 2002 was over 3 miles a day Fetching water itself can be dangerous many children have drown in the fast flowing rivers & women face sexual assault & animal attacks Time lost to sickness from dirty water (cholera) limits people ability to get back to the work of lifting themselves out of poverty Malnutrition results in productivity and economic losses as adults are unable to work and children unable to go to school Malnutrition can affect a child s physical & mental development to be affected & can make children more susceptible to disease Child mortality associated with under nutrition has reduced Malawi's workforce by 10.7%!

Factor 3: Food And Water Shortages Hinders Africa Development Why Is There Such Bad Food & Water Shortages In Africa? Poor Education & Health; (social) Debts & Cash Crops; (economic) Conflict; (political) Corruption Governments (political) For this question you would compare several factors in importance Evaluate The Extent To Which A World Issue You Have Studied (The Lack Of Development In Africa) Has Been Caused By Social Problems (Poor Health) 12 MARKS

Factor 3: Food And Water Shortages Hinders Africa Development Questions: 1. What are the causes of food emergencies in Africa? 2.Lack Of Water what % of illnesses are linked to poor water supply? 3. What % of the population have access to clean water? 4. Where do people in rural area get water from? What problems does this cause? 5. What are the problems in the cities? 6. What problems does poor water supplies cause Africa? 7.Lack Of Food what evidence is there of underweight children & which countries are affected the most? 8. Where is it better to live? 9. Is the situation any better now? 10.What long term problems does a lack of food supplies cause Africa?

Factor 3: Food And Water Shortages Hinders Africa Development TASK: Use The Plan To Write A Paragraph With Reference To A World Issue You Have Studied Analyse The Factors Which Have Caused The Issue. 12 Marks 1. Start with : One factor that contributes to the lack of development in Africa is a lack of food & water. 2. Use your KU to construct a KNOWLEDGE/EXAMPLE/ANALYSIS or EVALUATION answer Explain why development is not happening through looking at the problem with water, with examples Explain why this is not happening through looking at the problem with food, with examples 3. Sum up how lack of food & water are fundamental in the development of Africa & link to other paragraphs e.g. war

Factor 3: Food And Water Shortages Hinders Africa Development ANSWERS With Reference To A World Issue You Have Studied Analyse The Factors Which Have Caused The Issue. 12 Marks 1. One factor that contributes to the lack of development in Africa is food & water shortages. It can be argued that without meeting their basic needs of having access to food & water a country cannot develop because time is used each day in search of these items instead of developing the countries infrastructure. (Analysis) 2. Across the whole continent only about half the population has access to clean water & for many in rural areas rivers and lakes are the only source of water - these are affected seasonally (Knowledge & Example). Using rivers to fetching water can be dangerous & many children have drown in the fast flowing rivers. These are children that should be in school however gathering water in much more of an immediate priority however long term will make it more difficult to get out of poverty & have a well paid job. (Analysis) 3. Of all the children underweight in the continent around 37% live in Nigeria and Ethiopia (Example) Malnutrition can affect a child s physical & mental development to be affected & can make children more susceptible to disease therefore reducing the workforce which is desperately needed to rebuild Africa. (Analysis) 4. Overall it can be argued that food and water shortages hinders African development significantly because if less people were sick from water related illness like cholera & malnutrition then the government could spend resources else where such as education which would help to develop the country long term. (Example & Analysis)
