About IT Services Our multi-award winning IT Services Department supports over 30,000 students worldwide and over 3000 staff across multiple locations within Derbyshire and Staffordshire. Recognised by the UK IT Industry as having highly talented people using industry- leading technologies, we are also proud of our ability to deliver transformational change for the organisation in a culture which supports, develops and brings the best out of our teams to give great services to our students. Neil Williams, our Director of IT Services and Digital Transformation, consistently supports our drive to be best in class and as you would expect, our technology choices tend reflect this: We have two datacentres on a stretched LAN running CISCO FLexpods, Tintri, Dell EMC Isilon storage and are completely CISCO across our networking infrastructure. Our server environment is totally virtualised (VMWare) and we run a variety of enterprise applications from all the recognised industry leaders e.g. ORACLE, Microsoft. Our teams are encouraged to automate (CHEF) and innovate wherever possible. This supports the front-face of our service our teams delivering a 5000+ desktop estate and our 200+ teaching rooms, where we have again standardised on tier 1 vendors in Lenovo and Crestron for AV automation and control. Strategic Aims As well as delivering a great operational service to our customers, we are constantly leading multiple strategic IT developments. As an example, this year we are upgrading our telephone infrastructure, implementing a complete campus refresh of our networking infrastructure, moving our desktop services to Windows 10, supporting multi-million pound estates improvements and many other large scale projects. The IT Services Team The IT team at Derby is sector leading, benchmarked through external verification. In 2016, the team was identified by Price Waterhouse Coopers to be at a minimum top quartile in all areas of IT management, operation, security and governance. This was also supported in 2016 by the team achieving its highest ever staff engagement result which has again been exceeded in 2017. We are benchmarked as one of the best places to work in the UK based on industry standard engagement survey data. The department employs around 120 staff across a variety of teams such as Infrastructure, Systems, Operations and Response, Projects and Service Delivery. The teams work together to deliver services across the University and to support staff and students in areas such as IT training, purchase/hire of IT equipment, classroom, and digital technologies. IT Services are a positive, supportive community who are immensely proud of the service and support that we deliver across the University. The outstanding work that we achieve has earned us 29 national industry award nominations in the last 5 years, across all specialisms and for our people, projects and use of technology.
