The 55,000-square-foot facility houses two gyms with basketball courts, a wellness studio and weight center, an aquatic center and multiple fitness studios. These amenities serve as space for about 80 different annual programs and 65 weekly group exercise classes for everyone from toddlers to seniors. Child care and after school programs add a convenience for parents with hectic schedules. These services align with the goals of the Young Men s Christian Association. Originally founded in 1844 in London, the YMCA served as an escape from turmoil at home and the workplace. But what began as a Bible study and prayer group became so much more. The practice was brought to Boston in 1851, and the United States adapted the program into a workout platform where people today still go to escape the trials of their day. 154 n www.atthelakemagazine.com Making its mark on Lake Geneva since 1893, the YMCA building on Main Street and Wrigley Drive was destroyed by a fire, so the city repurposed a grocery store at 203 S. Wells St. in the early 1960s, and individuals from throughout the service area continue to flock to the same location. CEO and Executive Director Mike Kramp says the majority of users live within a 10-mile radius. While the Geneva Lakes Y has about 5,000 members, it s serving close to 7,000 people in the area. We re a cause driven movement, and the mission of the Y is we re all inclusive, or for everybody, Kramp says. We see the work that we do as life-changing work. A big part of what we do is health and wellness, but our main goal is offering programs that fill a community need. Amid this diversity of architecture sits one distinctively rustic lodge: Clear Sky Lodge, which has survived more than eight decades with relatively few exterior changes and stands today as a testament to its little-known architect, R. Harold Zook. When Michael and Jolynn Blair bought the house three years ago, they fulfilled an aspiration many years in the making. We had looked at this house in the 1980s when it first went on the market, Jolynn explains. We always kept it in our minds. The house itself is just unique and we like old houses. Sadly, the 21st century has not been kind to many of the historic homes on Geneva Lake, most of which were built during the area s initial resort heyday from the 1870s through the 1920s. During that time, wealthy families from Chicago, Rockford, Madison, Milwaukee and points in between flocked to the lake, where they hired the top architects and designers of the era to build widely varied and whimsical estates that reflected each owner s eccentric fancies. However, over the years many of these unique estates have succumbed to fire, subdivision or changing tastes and each year fewer and fewer of the historic lake homes remain standing. WINTER 2017 Advertising Deadline: October 13, 2017, Materials Deadline: October 20, 2017 Publication Date: Late November Luckily, thanks to the Blairs and other preservationist owners over the past two decades, Clear Sky Lodge is a serendipitous exception to the tear-down trend. The house was initially the vision of utilities mogul and early motion picture executive Harley L. Clarke who, along with his wife, bought 40 acres of land on the south shore The enormous dining table was custom-made for the space. It rests under a ceiling covered in French fabric panels, with matching draperies on the wall of windows. The exposed log walls, beamed ceilings and interior stonework are hallmarks of the Clear Sky Lodge design. www.atthelakemagazine.com 2017 Media Planner Page 5
