Step : Pour the concrete slab Using the braai grill and table top as guides, determine the size and placement of the brick braai structure. Bricks go around the perimeter of the grill and under the table top. Excavate the area to a depth of 00mm. Level and compact the ground. Add crushed stone to a height of 7mm. Compact and level the area again. 00 7 x PPC Surebuild cement, x 9mm stone, x clean river sand and sufficient water to produce a stiff consistency concrete. x 7 x 6 Place on top of compacted crushed stone until the hole is filled to ground level. Compact the concrete to expel all air. 8 Follow the curing process described on the back of the PPC Surebuild bag. The concrete should be hard enough to work on after -8 hours. Use a tape measure to determine the size of the area. x Smooth and level the slab using a straight edge and wood float.

Step : Dry fit the bricks Lay the braai grill and tabletop in the area you measured earlier. Lay the bricks end to end around the perimeter of the braai grill and under the table top, leaving a 0 - mm gap between each brick to account for the mortar. Use the builders square to make sure the bricks are perfectly square at the corners. 7 If the bricks do not fit properly, you can use a cold chisel or brick bolster to cut them. Lay out the first level of bricks using the braai grill and tabletop as guides. 6 Mark the outline of the bricks to use as a guide while laying the bricks.

Step : Lay the First Course Mix x PPC s Surebuild cement with 8 x building sand in a wheelbarrow. x 8x Make a hole in the centre. Slowly pour in small amounts of water and mix well. The mixture should be of a mud-like consistence that spreads easily. x Check the level of the concrete slab before spreading the first layer of mortar. Add more mortar if needed. Trowel a generous layer of mortar along the marked lines where the bricks will sit. Lay the first brick by pressing it gently into the mortar so that the mortar is about 0 mm thick. 6 Apply a layer of mortar to one end of the next brick before butting it against the first and pressing it into the mortar. 7 Remove excess mortar as you work. Continue working in this fashion until the first course has been laid around the marked base of the braai.

Step : Lay the following two courses Apply mortar to the top of the previous course. Start at the corners and lay another two courses of bricks. Lay the first brick by pressing it gently into the mortar, making sure to stagger the joints. Bricks may need to be cut with a brick bolster for a proper fit. Insert a metal tie into the mortar to join the inner wall to the longer rear wall, giving the finished structure added strength. As often as possible, use the straight edge and spirit level to check that the two sides and inner wall are level and that your structure is square.

Step : Lay the grill, burning tray and table supports Starting with the fourth course, and continuing with every other course, turn some of the bricks 90º so they jut out into the braai. These will serve as the burning tray braai grill support ledges. Front view Use a spirit level to ensure that the bricks jut out equally and that they remain aligned. Top view Ensure that you measure the width of the burning tray and grill to be sure of a good fit.

Step 6: Lay the final courses Complete another two courses on walls surrounding the grill area. Leave the brickwork to cure for a couple of hours. Set the tabletop on a thick (± mm) bed of mortar laid on the ledges formed on the internal wall by the turned bricks and on the top course of the rear and remaining side wall. final courses Use the pointing and grooving tool to rake and smooth the joints to create concave depression in the mortar before it stiffens. Once the mortar has set, use a stiff brush to scrape off remaining bits of loose mortar. These instructions are only a guide. There are many other alternative methods to building a great braai that will impress your friends Always remember to wear protective clothing. Happy braaing!
