10 COST OVERVIEW 1. Total fixed cost is the cost which does not vary with output. Total variable cost changes as output changes. Total cost is the sum of total fixed cost and total variable cost. 2. Explicit costs are the money payments made during the production of the good. Implicit costs are the opportunity costs of owner-owned resources. Total cost is the sum of explicit and implicit costs.. Average fixed cost is total fixed cost per unit of output. Average fixed cost declines as output increases, but never becomes zero. Average variable cost is the total variable cost per unit of output. Average total cost is the total cost per unit of output. Average total cost also equals the sum of average fixed cost and average variable cost.. Marginal cost is the change in total cost due to a change in output. Since total fixed cost does not change as output changes, the change in total cost is the change in total variable cost. Thus marginal cost is also the change in total variable cost due to a change in output. 5. The marginal cost is hook shaped. The shape is due to the law of diminishing returns..
