HSM58 Universal Material Tester 20kN Sturdy Ground Steel Pillars make unit robust for student or demonstration use Hand-operated hydraulic system enables manual control of loading for maximum precision Extensometer accurately display sample elongation in tensile test Data acquisition system with computer-linking supplied as standard Two year Warranty
Introduction The HSM58 base unit enables students to conduct up to nine materials testing experiments on a range of sample types. The modular nature of the unit allows optional extras to be added as and when budgets permit. Two types of testing are possible with the standard unit: Compression Tensile The HSM58 base unit is designed to promote a clear understanding of these concepts and to support the teaching of: Tensile and Compressive Testing Recording of Stress-Strain Diagrams Modulus of Elasticity Testing Tensile Strength Percentage Elongation The HSM58 has a 20kN loading capacity. The HSM58 base unit is suitable for students investigating tensile and compressive testing on metal and non-metal samples. The experimental capabilities can be further enhanced by the addition of optional extras. The data acquisition system and extensometer are uniquely supplied as standard and allow for computer-based learning through visual projection of characteristic stress-strain curves. Simple operation and robust construction make the unit suitable for student experiments as well as classroom demonstrations. Optional extras are being added to the range in-keeping with our policy of continual improvement. For an up-to-date list of experimental possibilities contact the local P.A.Hilton Ltd agent in your region. Description HSM58 Base Unit The base unit consists of a steel frame mounted on four feet for stability. All moving parts traverse precision ground steel pillars with precision linear bearings being used throughout for durability. The upper apparatus permits tensile testing and the lower apparatus compression testing. The hand operated hydraulic system applies the loading force to the specimens. A hand lever on the hydraulic system gives the end user control over the loading being applied. Fitted to the hydraulic system is an electronic pressure sensor to indicate test force. This connects to the HSM58DU Digital Interface supplied. A comprehensive instruction manual is provided along with all necessary tools and a 2 year warranty is supplied as standard. Safety features include safety glasses, ear defenders and a factory set pressure-relief valve. Tensile Testing Specimens are installed between upper and lower fixings using the M10 threads in each fixing. The upper fixing has a course adjustment for ensuring rapid specimen installation and removal. An extensometer is also supplied for use with stress-strain graphs. A set of 30 Tensile test specimens are supplied as standard. Figure 1: Tensile test specimen fitted with extensometer to record elongation PC data acquisition and evaluation software comes supplied along with a Digital Interface to connect the hardware to a host computer (not supplied). Compression Testing Two compression plates with fastenings are installed on the lower apparatus as standard. These are suitable for testing soft compressive samples such as insulating material or wood. Compression is monitored using a linear displacement transducer. Compression samples are not supplied for samples see HSM58L.
