Lenovo is a leader in x86-based server customer satisfaction scores in 1H16 August 2016 TBR T EC H N O LO G Y B U S I N ES S R ES EAR C H, I N C.

Introduction Global server customers are deploying x86-based solutions in increasingly demanding use cases. Consequently, customers report attributes such as performance, virtualization, quality and reliability are all critical to their purchase decisions. However, TBR s 1H16 Corporate IT Buying Behavior and Customer Satisfaction Study: x86- based Servers (CSAT x86-based Servers Study) found there are some areas in particular that vendors must excel in to meet customer requirements including management capabilities and product design/features. TBR measured 22 customer satisfaction attributes for Dell, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Lenovo, and Lenovo had the highest rolling six-month mean satisfaction scores for nearly every attribute and tied for the top spot for three attributes. Being the top vendor for most attributes indicates customers rely on Lenovo to provide high-quality, reliable x86 servers. Lenovo s overall TBR weighted satisfaction index score, which includes sales, product and service attributes as well as brand loyalty, was 84.6 out of a possible 100, surpassing Dell and HPE, which scored 79.3 and 76.7, respectively. Lenovo has been No. 1 in overall x86-based server customer satisfaction for the past several quarters as customer loyalty increases. Lenovo reported a 92.1% willingness by customers to buy again, which is the highest percentage received in this attribute for the company in over two years. TBR believes Lenovo s industry-leading customer satisfaction scores reflect its ability to meet customer expectations for high-quality hardware and strong support. Vendors must excel in critical attributes to meet customer expectations While Lenovo, Dell and HPE have historically performed well in product-related attributes, Lenovo scored the highest in six out of seven product attributes. Customers continue to demand a high level of performance, reliability and quality. However, Dell improved its product attribute standing from 2H15 and tied Lenovo in ongoing hardware reliability satisfaction, a critical attribute in customers purchase decisions. While Dell s scores are catching up to Lenovo s, Lenovo still holds a strong lead in total cost of ownership (TCO) mean satisfaction. It is becoming increasingly challenging for vendors to differentiate in other product-related attributes, and as a result, vendors are utilizing sales and support attributes such as ongoing support and maintenance, delivery time, on-site support and phone support to provide added value to customers. Consequently, vendors that focus on delivering services to ensure a high level of availability and quick response times were more likely to have higher satisfaction scores according to TBR s 1H16 CSAT x86-based Servers Study. TBR s x86 server customer research determines the sales, product, and services and support attributes most important to customer satisfaction. In TBR s 1H16 study, customers rated performance, virtualization, efficiency, scalability, ongoing hardware reliability, initial hardware quality, management capabilities and product design/features as the most critical attributes to overall satisfaction with their x86 servers. These product-related features are table stakes for customers, and vendors are seeking to differentiate through services, support, maintenance and TCO. While cited as secondary to the product features critical to customers, these attributes are still important for vendors to consider as they seek to differentiate from competing server vendors. Initial hardware quality and ongoing reliability Customers are using x86 servers for an increasingly diverse range of workloads, including performance-centric and business-centric application, and require reliability for those workloads. As a result, customers surveyed in TBR s 1H16 CSAT x86-based Servers Study reported initial hardware quality and ongoing hardware reliability were two attributes critical to their overall server satisfaction. Vendors that can provide higher-quality hardware than competitors produce higher overall satisfaction scores. Virtualization, efficiency, scalability Customers continue to seek means to reduce IT operating expenses and improve server efficiency. As a result, they continue to invest in virtualization and seek server hardware that can be easily and efficiently scaled. Further, customers demand x86 servers with features that are more efficient and easy to manage in-house. TBR believes 2 Lenovo Server White Paper August 2016 2016 Technology Business Research, Inc.

this need will continue to grow, rendering efficiency and scalability of x86 server hardware increasingly important attributes for customers. Service and support Customers are seeking support services from x86 server vendors to tailor to their in-house support needs. While customers consider support and services attributes less critical than server performance, quality, reliability and design, support and services remain relevant as they provide tools to minimize server downtime and maximize longevity. Server vendors can benefit from focusing on delivering services that ensure a high level of availability and quick response times. Findings from TBR s 1H16 CSAT x86-based Servers Study indicate that quality services and support are important differentiators for x86 server vendors. In the study, customers ranked seven out of the nine service attributes as important to customer satisfaction. This indicates customers demand a high level of availability for services and support backed by strong technical expertise. Well, this is a nobrainer, [Lenovo s] ongoing maintenance is seamless and hassle-free. It works exactly the way it should, with very little effort from internal staff. IT Director, Travel/Hospitality Performance Server vendors are tailoring their x86 server solutions to meet customers needs for infrastructure consolidation, as well as optimized performance for high-growth areas such as cloud and analytics. Workload-specific solutions provide performance advantages for customers, depending on their specific IT requirements. In TBR s 1H16 CSAT x86-based Servers Study, Lenovo customers reported strong brand loyalty driven by easy integration and reliable performance expectations being met. To differentiate, vendors are optimizing their x86 server models for memory-intensive workloads such as analytics, which provides efficiency and performance advantages for customers. Lenovo remains a leader in customer satisfaction across all attributes In TBR s study, Lenovo improved its mean satisfaction score in all 22 attributes compared to 2H15, leading to a topranked spot in nearly all attributes compared to Dell and HPE. Lenovo s continual investments in enhancing its x86 server portfolio and its commitment to providing high-quality services and support enable the company to achieve leading x86 server satisfaction scores, highlighting its ability to consistently meet customers expectations for quality, reliability, performance, scalability and support services. During 1H16 Lenovo was ranked No. 1 in satisfaction across six out of seven product-related attributes, including a 6.3% increase in management capabilities and a 3.9% increase in performance satisfaction compared to 4Q15. Lenovo s high level of customer satisfaction helped the vendor improve its loyalty score. After finishing second to HPE in 2H15, Lenovo became the leader in 1H16 in customer willingness to buy again and willingness to recommend. Initial hardware quality and ongoing reliability Lenovo s x86 server team develops its x86 solutions to meet customer expectations for initial hardware quality and ongoing reliability. Findings from TBR s 1H16 CSAT x86-based Servers Study indicate these two attributes are critical to customers purchase decisions and their level of satisfaction. Customers indicated that ongoing reliability and initial hardware were ranked the second and third most important attributes behind performance in terms of satisfaction. Lenovo has an advantage as its x86 servers scored well for customer satisfaction across all attributes and remains the leader in initial hardware quality satisfaction. Hardware reliability remains a critical factor in x86 server satisfaction, and TBR believes it will influence customer purchase decisions as mission-critical workloads are increasingly deployed on x86 servers. All our technical requirements are met with ease and [the servers] have been consistent. Project Manager, Computer Services and IT Consulting 3 Lenovo Server White Paper August 2016 2016 Technology Business Research, Inc.

Virtualization, efficiency, scalability In TBR s 1H16 study, Lenovo earned the top spot in rolling six-month virtualization, efficiency and scalability satisfaction. Customers are using server virtualization to cost-effectively add workloads without having to add new servers. This is helping to drive operational efficiency cost savings. Lenovo is messaging the scalability of its x86 servers, and users can easily increase capacity as needed. While Dell, HPE and Lenovo all experienced increases in virtualization, efficiency and scalability satisfaction, Dell and HPE still lag behind Lenovo, as Lenovo reached a 5.77 mean satisfaction score. Lenovo s portfolio enables customers to consolidate multiple operating systems, helping the company outcompete other vendors that offer similar capabilities. Service and support Customers surveyed in TBR s 1H16 CSAT x86-based Servers Study were asked to provide feedback on nine attributes related to the services and support of their x86 servers. In 1H16 Lenovo was the leader in seven of the nine services and support attributes, ranging from phone, on-site, social media and automated support to replacement parts availability. Lenovo leverages its services and support staff to differentiate from the competition. The vendor s support services enable customers to minimize server downtime, deploy new x86-based solutions, consolidate their infrastructures, and troubleshoot issues quickly and cost effectively. Lenovo s x86 servers enable organizations to focus on supporting mission-critical workloads, as Lenovo provides support services to manage the server infrastructure. Dell s improvements to its ongoing services and maintenance helped the company tie with Lenovo for the highest score in these attributes after being unable to achieve a single first-place ranking in 2H15. TBR believes the vendors will focus on providing services that deliver a high level of availability and quick response times. Performance Lenovo s x86 servers achieved the highest rolling six-month mean customer satisfaction score for performance in TBR s 1H16 study. Lenovo s server performance satisfaction score increased from the previous two quarters at 5.86, maintaining its No. 1 position. While Lenovo remains the leader in performance satisfaction, the vendor lost a large part of its lead over competitors Dell and HPE during 1H16. Notably, the System x server performance score was significantly higher than Dell s and HPE s x86 server performance scores in 2H15, holding approximately a lead of 30 basis points. In 1H16 the lead was closer to 20 basis points. TBR believes Lenovo will message the high quality of its System x offering, targeting midsize businesses. Whenever any technical problems have been encountered, they have been dealt with swiftly by [Lenovo s] support. Project Manager, Computer Software Purchase price and TCO Lenovo maintained the top ranking in rolling six-month customer satisfaction for both purchase price/acquisition cost and TCO to customers surveyed in TBR s 1H16 CSAT x86-based Servers Study, scoring significantly higher than HPE and Dell. Lenovo is improving TCO satisfaction by better meeting customer expectations, producing consistent results, and allowing customers to avoid hidden costs and less-than-satisfactory experiences. Conclusion Lenovo s System x servers exceed the demands of customers who are purchasing x86 servers. Based on customer feedback in the 1H16 CSAT x86-based Servers Study, Lenovo s offerings meet customer satisfaction in areas such as hardware quality and reliability; performance; virtualization, efficiency and scalability; and purchase price and TCO. Lenovo s overall No. 1 ranking in the study demonstrates it is successfully adapting its business model and improving hardware quality and support for its x86 servers to meet global customer needs. 4 Lenovo Server White Paper August 2016 2016 Technology Business Research, Inc.
