Composite materials In this application, coated strip is glued to PE cores or corrugated and honeycomb structures. Bonding agents applied to the reverse side enhance the adhesive strength. For external faces, Hydro Aluminium uses outdoor durable paint, which is highly suitable for end-use applications, such as facades and wall cladding, advertising signs and partition walls. Coil-Coated Aluminium for Ceiling Systems Hydro Aluminium supplies a broad range of coated aluminium products, specially designed to provide a long aesthetic life in a wide variety of ceiling systems. As a leading manufacturer, we produce aluminium semis in different thicknesses and lacquer coatings for all types of ceiling cladding products. We place great emphasis on the use of environmentally compatible materials and processes throughout our entire production chain. The low weight of aluminium enables the cost-efficient cladding of larger ceiling areas and avoids the need for expensive support structures. Another advantage: our wide range of colours gives greater design freedom for the fashioning of individualised solutions. All ceiling systems can thus be matched harmoniously to their surroundings. Coil-Coated Aluminium for Raffstores When producing lacquer-coated strip for raffstores, Hydro Aluminium combines the right alloy with the coating system ideally suited to outdoor applications. In this way, we easily meet the exacting requirements with regard to weatherability and durability. Our coated raffstores strip is not only resistant to corrosion and abrasion but is also colourfast. It is an optically attractive product with a perfect surface finish. When selecting the most suitable product, a chromatic pre-treatment with one-coat lacquering or an anodised, chrome-free pre-treatment comprising two-coat lacquering are on offer. Both sides can be coated in different colours in a single operation. It is also possible to apply a foam-like cellular coating on one side only. Coated Aluminium for Capping Strip In suspended ceilings made from mineral fibre panels, capping strip enhances the decorative appearance of the ceiling support structure. This narrow, extremely thin-gauge, coated strip is used to clad the visible surfaces of the T-shaped construction rails. Painted Aluminium for Rainwater Guttering Systems General Factory coated aluminium coil has been used in rainwater guttering systems for more than 20 years in many parts of the world. Roll forming the gutter in one length at the time of installation eliminates the risk of leaks and pre-installation damage. End caps and corner mitres are generally pressed from the same type of coated coil, to ensure uniformity of colour and appearance. Downspouts and associated units are also fabricated from coated aluminium coil, although other materials for these parts are also commonly used. As a major supplier of coated aluminium coil, Hydro Aluminium has been servicing the rainwater guttering market since its introduction to Europe. Hydro Aluminium takes pride in supplying products based on environmentally friendly raw materials and processes and was the first paint line in Europe to achieve an ISO 14001 certification. Material specification The aluminium alloy and temper has been specially selected for guttering, with forming properties meeting the needs of the machines used for gutter profile and presses used for the accessories. Commonly used alloys are in the 3000-series, mainly in the 3105 and 3003 range. The coil is usually coated on both sides with the same coating system but often in different colour combinations. This allows the customer the flexibility to select either colour for the decorative face of the installation, whilst at the same time giving added performance on the inside of the gutter. Hydro Aluminium s unique Hot A/C anodizing pre-treatment is used prior to the primer and topcoat paint system. Hydro Aluminium has more than 50 years of experience with the environmental friendly electrolytic pre-treatment. The pre-treatment is an alternating current anodizing in sulphuric acid electrolyte. The process produces a clean surface with a thin aluminium oxide film. This film is an integral part of the aluminium surface and is flexible due to its porous structure. This pre-treatment prepares the surface for excellent paint adhesion and corrosion resistance of the painted products. The pre-treatment is non-toxic and does not contain any chromium or heavy metal based chemicals and, therefore, underlines Hydro Aluminium s environmental friendly profile. The coating type is selected from one of the following: Hydrocoat 100 Hydrocoat PVDF 300 Hydrocoat Textured 800 The coating type and gauge selected is a balance between cost effectiveness and performance. The service life is dependent on many factors, including conditions of exposure, cleaning and keeping the surface free from prolonged contact with incompatible materials. Painted Aluminium for General Applications General The versatility of the Hydrocoat range of coated aluminium sheet and coil products is such that it is being used in an ever increasing range of end-uses. Hydro Aluminium has been a leading supplier of these materials for many years with coatings specially formulated for individual end-uses. Hydro Aluminium takes pride in supplying products based on environmentally friendly raw materials and processes and was the first paint line in Europe to achieve an ISO 14001 certification. Main end-uses There is a large number of different end-uses falling into the category General applications. Some examples are given below. Painted aluminium for bonding applications Painted aluminium for finstock and heat recovery systems Painted aluminium for tunnel cladding Material specification The alloys and tempers used are dependent on the design parameters for the individual end-use of the material. The most commonly used alloys are in the 3000-series, but alternative alloys are available on request. Stucco embossing after coating may be specified, if required. The coating used may be one of the standard Hydrocoat systems or alternatively a coating specifically formulated to have the required properties for a particular end-use. For decorative purposes, a wide range of standard colours and special colours, as well as the full range of gloss levels are available in most coating types. A lacquer coating is normally applied to the reverse side of the coil and this may have compatibility with normal insulating foams, as well as with typical bonding adhesives. However, customers are recommended to confirm compatibility with the particular bonding or foaming system used with samples that we are ready to provide. The reverse coating also acts as a protector to the front coating, reducing the risk of pressure and metal marking, and as a lubricant in the forming process. In some product areas the coatings are designed for bonding applications, in which the use is more functional than decorative. Widely differing end-uses include the manufacture of domestic or commercial doors, in which aluminium is bonded to wood, and the production of high pressure melamine laminated composites for the interiors of buses, trains and office partitioning. A high level of adhesion and corrosion resistance is achieved using suitable primers on top of Hydro Aluminium s unique HotA/C anodizing pre-treatment. Painted Aluminium for Cladding and Roofing General Hydrocoat pre-coated aluminium coil is a natural choice for cladding and roofing applications with coating types designed for the various requirements of this market area, available in a pleasing range of colours. Hydro Aluminium has supplied these materials for many years to different parts of the world, covering all environmental conditions. A wide range of alloys, tempers and coating types is available for all the different cladding and roofing systems in use today and the many different fabrication techniques employed. For example, fully hard tempers may be used in flat faced panel applications, whereas soft temper aluminium is available for the construction of welted roofs or cladding, where traditional hand or machine formed seams are produced on site. The normal roll formed profiles of the trapezoidal, circular, corrugated and standing seam types require alloys and tempers related to the specific end-use and the individual machine to be used. Material specification The aluminium alloy and temper is determined by the factors mentioned above. Non standard alloys and tempers for specific end-uses are available on request. The coil is usually coated on one side with the decorative coating and on the reverse with a suitable wash coat. If a full coat in the same or a different colour is required on the reverse face, this can also be provided. Depending on individual requirements, this wash coat can be provided with the properties for adhesion to foams for insulating purposes or for bonding to other materials such as compressed fibre board or plywood, for example. In these cases, however, care should be taken to ensure that the Hydrocoat lacquer is compatible with the specific foam or adhesive to be used in practice. Samples can normally be provided for these evaluations. The reverse coating also acts as a protector to the front coating, reducing the risk of pressure and metal marking, and as a lubricant in the forming process. Painted Aluminium for Caravans General Hydro Aluminium produces a range of coils and sheets specifically designed for this demanding end-use and has been a major supplier to the caravan industry for many years. Hydro Aluminium takes pride in supplying products based on environmentally friendly raw materials and processes and was the first paint line in Europe to achieve an ISO 14001 certification. Material specification The alloy used for caravan sheet is commonly in the 3000-series, mainly in the 3003 and 3105 range. Temper is selected to satisfy the roll forming, folding and other fabricating requirements associated with caravan construction. Hydro Aluminium s unique Hot A/C anodizing pre-treatment is used prior to the primer and topcoat paint system. Hydro Aluminium has more than 50 years of experience with the environmental friendly electrolytic pre-treatment. The pre-treatment is an alternating current anodizing in sulphuric acid electrolyte. The process produces a clean surface with a thin aluminium oxide film. This film is an integral part of the aluminium surface and is flexible due to its porous structure. This pre-treatment prepares the surface for excellent paint adhesion and corrosion resistance of the painted products. The pre-treatment is non-toxic and does not contain any chromium or heavy metal based chemicals and, therefore, underlines Hydro Aluminium s environmental friendly profile. The front side coating used is normally high gloss Hydrocoat 100. The reverse side coating is normally a clear lacquer which has been designed for use with the types of adhesive used in bonding caravan sides. In these cases care should be taken to ensure that the Hydrocoat lacquer is compatible with the specific adhesive to be used in practice. Samples can normally be provided for these evaluations. The reverse coating is equally a protector to the front coating, reducing the risk of pressure and metal marking, and acting as a lubricant in the forming process. The products include materials for embossed plates which demand extreme ductility in the base metal, as well as for the multilayer systems common in parts of Europe. Typical license plate types: Pre-treated aluminium to accept retro-reflective film for subsequent embossing and overprinting. White coated material for embossing and overprinting. White coated base sheet for embossing and black coated thin gauge sheet for perforating and bonding to the base aluminium in producing a composite plate. The coating is a special formulation with properties unique for this end-use. It must be highly flexible to withstand the drawing which takes place during plate manufacture, resistant to road salt, petrol and diesel, and yet accepts the laminated retro-reflective film with high levels of adhesion. These properties are covered in various national and international standards with which materials must comply. The presence of a reverse coating has the benefit of assisting fabrication and reducing tool wear, due to its lubricating properties, although no lubricants are normally present. It also acts as a protector to the front coating, reducing the risk of pressure and metal marking.
