Fibre Cement

Fibre Cement Description Characteristics is an asbestos-free, cellulose fibre reinforced cement board that is very dense with a non-porous surface. The excellent moisture resistant characteristics and mechanical strength of cement board makes it an ideal tile backer board that can be used in wet areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, shower areas and even spa centres. Applications Fibre cement board is suitable as a base for tiling in wet areas. It can also be used for external soffits in sheltered positions. Installation Effect of condensation fibre cement board is vapour permeable, however, should the vapour condenses on the surface, the board will retain its strength. General It is important to observe appropriate health and safety legislation when working on site i.e. personal protective clothing and equipment etc. The following notes are intended as general guidance only. In practice, consideration must be given to design criteria requiring specific project solutions. Handling The boards should always be handled by two people and be carried on their edge. At no time should the boards be lifted flat by one of its ends. When lifting a board, the long edge should be kept in contact with the stack. 1

Fibre Cement Installation Cutting fibre cement board can be cut using a carpenters hand saw or electrically operated circular saw. Fixing fibre cement board should be placed on the appropriate Gypframe components with the printed face pointing outward, and then fixed using counter sinking self-tapping screws positioned at 200 centres, on all framing members, and at no less than 10 from the edge of the board. When used in a ceiling application, expansion joints should be placed at regular intervals. Finishing Jointing fibre cement board can be jointed and finished using Gyproc paper tape and Gyproc Jointing Compound to give a seamless look. Skiing fibre cement board can be skied using GypFine MultiSkim for a smooth finish and can be decorated with most types of paints, textures and wall papers. The length of the screws should be 2.5 to 3 ties the thickness of the board. Health and Safety 1.Identification of the substances / preparation and company fibre cement board Supplier Saint Gobain Gyproc Emirates Industries L.L.C ICAD 1 Mussafah, Abu Dhabi United Arab Emirates P.O. Box 38983 Free Phone 800 GYPROC (497762) Recoended uses: fibre cement boards can be used in internal linings specially in wet rooms. They can also be used in semi-exposed areas. Ingestion DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Rinse out mouth thoroughly and give plenty of water. Inhalation If irritation occurs, remove person to fresh air. General Get medical attention if any symptoms persist. 5. Fire fighting measures The products do not pose a fire hazard. However, some packaging materials or facings may burn. Suitable extinguishing media water, foam, carbon dioxide or dry powder. 2. Composition / information on ingredients Material Weight % Cellulose 7 12 Silica 15-40 Portland cement 30 to 40 Pulverised fuel ash 15 to 40 3. Hazards identification THE MOST IMPORTANT HAZARDS ARE: These products are not classified as dangerous according to CHIP. Dust from sawing or sanding may irritate the respiratory system, skin and eyes. 4. First aid measures Eye Contact Wash eyes with clean water. 6. Accidental release measures Not applicable. 7. Handling and storage storage The boards must be stored on a firm level ground to maintain stability. Also ensure that stacks are both level and vertical, sheltered from frost and direct sunlight in dry conditions. The boards are supplied covered. It is advisable to keep them covered on site for as long as possible, even when the stack is in use. Use Minimise dust generation when sawing or sanding in poorly ventilated places. Avoid eye contact - see Section 8 for recoended personal protective equipment and Section 3 for hazards identification. Skin contact Wash thoroughly with soap and water. 2

Fibre Cement Health and Safety Manual handling Sheets of cement board can be unwieldy, use an appropriate lifting technique. The weight of each sheet can vary between products. For manual handling purposes assume the following: fibre cement board weights Thickness Width Length Weight kg Fibre Cement 6 23.90 Fibre Cement 12 47.81 Fibre Cement 15 59.76 NB: All weights are approximate. Mechanical handling The dimensions of the pallet vary depending on the product size. To avoid potentially overloading a lift truck, it is important that any effect on load centres is considered. The nominal weight of each palletized load is given within the weights table in this section of this document. NB: When working with individual boards, only work from a single pallet, not a stack. 10. Stability and reactivity No special physical conditions need to be avoided. No specific restrictions regarding incompatible materials. 11. Toxicology information Acute Effects: Direct contact may cause eye, skin, and/or respiratory irritation during cutting if personal protective equipment is not used. Chronic affects / carcinogenicity Fibre cement boards do not release inhalable dust in their installed state and therefore do not present any known health hazards when installed and properly maintained. 12. Ecological information Fibre cement boards will not degrade in the ground. 13. Disposal consideration Waste from cement products is normally classified as 'non-hazardous but should not be co-disposed with municipal waste. Dispose at an authorized landfill site in accordance with the local waste management regulation. 14. Transport information Not classified as hazardous for transportation but boards must be covered with polythene or tarpaulin cover. The edges must be protected with corner / edge plastic sections. Pallet stacking heights The maximum stack heights on level concrete floors and vertical stacks are as follows:- Recoended storage height for flat sheets is up to 1 metre per stack 8. Exposure control / personal protection Personal protection Respiratory Use in a well ventilated area. Where practicable use engineering methods to control dust levels. If the exposure standards could be exceeded use a disposable face mask complying with EN 149 FFP2. Skin Wear appropriate clothing to protect against repeated or prolonged skin contact. Eye If there is a risk of material entering the eye, wear eye protection to BS EN 166. 15. Regulatory information Not classified under the CHIP regulations. 16. Other information Regulation no.
