Outline Background to ISO 14001 What is changing in 2015? What is Annex SL? What will the changes mean for organizations? Revision and transition timelines Working through the transition 2

What is ISO 14001? The world s first environmental management systems standard was published by BSI in 1992 BS 7750 In 1993 ISO set up a new technical committee to develop an international standard using BS 7750 as a basis. ISO 14001 was first published in 1996 and went through a revision in 2004 when minor changes were made In 2011 the 2 nd periodic review of ISO 14001 commences Worldwide there are approximately 267,000 companies certified against ISO 14001* (* ISO Survey 2012) Copyright 2012 BSI. What is the aim of ISO 14001? To enable organizations to establish the systems and processes necessary to manage their environmental risk. Implementation of the standard is intended to lead to reducing operational costs, managing resources (natural and human) and showing commitment to improving your environment performance. Why the need for change? All standards are reviewed periodically In 2011 the ISO Technical Committee agreed that ISO 14001 should be revised There is a organizational requirement for a common format across all standards for ease of implementation and management The revision has considered the final report of the ISO/TC 207 SC1 Future Challenges for EMS Study Group The revision will also ensure the maintenance and improvement of the basic principles of ISO 14001:2004 as well as the retention and improvement of its existing requirements 6

What are the proposed changes? The standard will been written in accordance with Annex SL, the new high level structure which will be common across all management systems providing: Core text Common terms Core definitions This will enhance the consistency and alignment of different management system standards The standard will still be based on PDCA with most of the previous requirements included but in different areas There is an aim to strengthen the incorporation of the EMS into the Organization s business processes There is an increased requirement for senior management to take a greater involvement in the environmental management system 7

ISO 14001: 2015 Key Envisaged Changes (at this time) Clause 1 Scope Clause 2 Clause 3 Normative references Terms and definitions Clause 4 Context of the organization Essentially a new requirement to understand the needs and expectations of interested parties Clause 5 Leadership Enhanced requirements Clause 6 Planning Significant change Enhanced requirements Clause 7 Support Enhanced requirement New requirement Clause 8 Operations New requirement Enhanced requirement Simplified requirement Enhanced requirement Clause 9 Performance evaluation New requirement Clause 10 Improvement More structured approach 8

What is Annex SL? Annex SL is the new high level structure that will provide a common framework across all management system Annex SL has been designed to enhance the consistency and alignment of different management system standards Framework will provide matching sub-clauses against the top-level structure Common language applied across all management system standards 9

What will the changes mean for organizations? No action is necessary or required by clients until the revision has been published and the final amendments are known Once the new version of ISO 14001 has been published, clients will need to transition to the new standard This will involve revising their processes and documentation in line with the new requirements Historically, clients have a 2 year period to transition to the new standard, however future details will not be available until after the new standard has been published Keep up to date with progress at www.bsigroup.com 10

Revision and transition timeline 2013 October Second committee draft released National Standards Bodies (NSB) local committees review draft and collate comments for the country to feed into the main ISO committee 2014 Q2 Draft International Standard (DIS) expected and will be made available for public comments Q4 Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) expected 2015 Q2/3 International Standard expected 2015 2017 Likely transition period for existing ISO 14001: 2004 clients 11

Helping clients through the transition Firstly, clients don t need to do anything yet just continue to use ISO 14001 to improve your environmental performance As soon as revision publication dates are confirmed, BSI will be in touch with all their ISO 14001 clients to help manage their transition to the revised standard BSI will be supporting clients through the transition period with a range of supporting material and services including: Transition training Guidance whitepapers Webinars Contact BSI to discuss your certificate arrangements 12
