Rise and Fall Bed Innovative Safe Ergonomic

The Aiken Group Aiken Group was founded in 1987 as a multi-disciplinary engineering services company specialising in modular construction, welding habitats and architectural works. The organisation has continued to evolve as an international engineering and specialist group with a focused response to meeting customers needs, offering flexible solutions and providing bespoke, innovative results tailored to the most demanding specifications. Our disciplines can be applied to a variety of facilities in locations both on and off shore including drill rigs, fixed installations, FPSOs, marine vessels, fracking and oil installations, petrochemical plants, refineries, security/military facilities, commercial properties and social housing developments

The Aiken Group Automated Rise and Fall Bed System was an innovation developed upon proven technologies to mitigate a number of common, reoccurring and historical health and safety issues faced within offshore accommodation. Access and Egress Typical access to a bunk unit is made via a fixed or removable ladder. Ingress to the upper bunk is reasonably straight forward however egress is made difficult due to the positioning of the body. This often results in the ladder not being used or used in the reverse manner. This provides no ability to utilise the handholds from a forward position.

Stewards Ability to change linen on Mattresses Making up the bed and turning of mattresses proves difficult due to the limited access to the upper bunk units. The restricted nature of the ladder, or temporary step arrangements, does not allow for this task to be undertaken in a safe manner and leads to the potential for a high incident rate amongst the stewarding personnel. The activities of fitting sheets and turning mattresses leads to potential health and safety risks due to the precarious body positioning of stewards and the repetition of being placed in ergonomically unviable positions. POB Restrictions POB restrictions continue to grow within the industry, predominantly due to increased vendors working on platforms/vessels. In addition Turnarounds (TARs) and Shut Downs require an increased volume of maintenance vendors to be on board. HSE legislation limits the use of additional bedding in the form of Pullman type systems as they feel that this option could be utilised on a continual basis. We feel our solution offers the possibility to provide a third hot bed for use during these times whilst ensuring no opportunity could be taken to utilise the system permanently.

The major factors that drove the initial development of the system are as follows: Mitigation of the issues regarding stewards changing bed linen, turning mattresses and deep cleaning bed pans from steps or ladders potentially leading to risk of injury. Provision of low level bedding for day/nightshift operatives via lowering the mid bunk unit and negating the need to access or egress the bed from a bunk ladder. Provision of a compliant option for Hot Bed requirements by introducing a full width 3 bunk option that provides a fully fresh bed whilst limiting the possibility of having over-occupation within the cabin.

Functionality and Features include: Control options range from a remote system controlled through either a hand held control or smart device app to a straight forward push button mounted on the bunk. Each of these possibilities are installed with a lockable key switch to prevent unauthorised access. The system controls can be designed in such a way to restrict positioning of the bunk units to the Stewards. Construction of the bunks utilises proven and readily available components within the system that are EN/ISO/BS compliant ensuring quality, integrity and safety. Safety features include the use of anti-collision sensors, customisable control options and a lock out capability to withstand a 2400n load in the event of an asset power failure.

Installation: Minimise the time to install by pre manufacturing component parts providing a plug and play installation which significantly reduces assembly time on location. Cost effectiveness remains a major consideration; through design the cost to market has been limited as well as the installation time. Each unit can be adapted to meet the client s budget through final design and cost options.

Benefits: Creation of a personnel space for the crews on board which contributes to the important human factors that ensure a healthy and happier workforce. No on- going maintenance is required other than good housekeeping, the unit is designed to give easy access to parts should the unlikely event of failure occur. The range of options is not only limited to bunk beds; further options include desking, seating, storage and play areas. This allows multiple applications of this technology in areas such as hotel chains, student accommodation, hostels, transport and private housing.
