ph and redox electrodes, main components Head Connector S8, coaxial, for standard electrodes. MP-4, multiple, for CRISON electrodes with integrated temperature sensor. Fixed cable, no connector. Electrolyte Diaphragm Sensitive membrane Screw cap PG 13.5-type, standard to all manufacturers. Reference element This is a cell that supplies a stable potential (mv). There are a number of types: Silver wire (Ag) Galvanically coated with AgCl. This is the typical reference element for low-cost electrodes. Encapsulated AgCl crystals The silver wire comes into contact with a portion of the AgCl crystals inside a small glass tube. Ag + ion barrier In some electrodes, the tube with Ag/AgCl is lengthened to house a chemical substance which acts as a barrier to silver ions. This prevents the from clogging due to the formation and precipitation of AgCl and Ag 2 S. Sleeved silver wire It consists of silver wire coated with AgCl, and protected by a tube. This protects the reference element from possible alterations that may occur in the electrolyte. Electrolyte This is a highly-concentrated saline solution into which the reference element is submerged. It comes in 3 forms: liquid, gel or solid (polymer). Liquid electrolyte. Used for refillable electrodes. There are various types suitable for different applications. All of them are KClbased. Gel electrolytes. These are used in non-refillable or low maintenance electrodes. Most are glycerine gels. Electrodes with large PTFE include a polyacrylic gel, which allows little electrolyte diffusion through the. Solid electrolytes. These are also used in non-refillable electrodes. They are made of a conducting polymer. Diaphragm This is the point of union between the sample and the electrolyte. It is the critical part of the electrode as it has a direct influence on its life-span. A wide range of s are available. They vary according to manufacturer, application, quality and price. This catalogue features electrodes with ceramic, porous PTFE and open s. The ceramic is a chemically-inert, porous ceramic plate. These are the traditional s. They allow a small electrolyte flow towards the sample. The flow is greater in the pressurized electrodes. Porous PTFE, consisting of a large ring of porous PTFE through which contact between the electrolyte and the sample is possible. The conductivity of the sample is hardly altered, thanks to the low level of flow provided by the polyacrylic electrolyte. Open, which in fact should be called less. The sample and the electrolyte are in direct contact. There is no electrolyte flow. It is only used in electrodes with solid electrolyte (polymer). There are two types: - lateral orifice. This consists of an orifice in the body of the electrode. - circular, ring-like groove between the main body, the indicator electrode and the reference electrode. It facilitates a high degree of contact with the sample. The glass membrane The composition of the glass membrane affects characteristics such as sensitivity, chemical, thermal and mechanical resistance of the electrode or the scale of measurement, e.g. a ph of 0...12, of 0...14. There are membranes with specific types of glass, e.g. to measure ph in the presence of a certain concentration of HF. There are also special membranes for measuring at extremely low temperatures (-30ºC). A large membrane is a symbol of quality. The electrode response depends directly on the quality of the membrane. ORP Electrodes (Oxidation-Reduction Potential, Redox) These electrodes are also called metallic electrodes and are made of platinum or gold. They are used to measure the oxidation or reduction character of a solution. They have undergone the same changes as ph electrodes. Insofar as their connectors, reference elements, electrolyte and s are concerned, they come in the same forms, but the glass membrane is replaced with a ring or wire made from a noble metal, usually platinum. Platinum: recommended for strongly oxidizing samples. Gold: recommended for acid samples, or containing Cr or Fe. This catalogue does not contain redox electrode versions with integrated temperature sensors, because the measuring instrument does not compensate for it. Metallic ring or wire 4

installation For the correct installation of a ph or redox, conductivity or D.O. sensor in a process, a housing must be used. It is designed to: Protect the electrode against mechanical impact. Prevent splashing, flooding and chemical attack on electrode and cable connectors. Ensure that the sensitive part of the electrode is immersed. Increase certainty as regards the measurement. Extend electrode life. Facilitate sensor maintenance. For installing in reservoirs, channels, tanks... 1 Immersion housing for one sensor. 2 Immersion housing for various sensors, with automatic sensor washing. 3 Floating housing. 4 Lateral insertion housing. 1 Pipe installation 5 and 6 Vertical insertion housings. 7 Flow-through chamber. 4 Lateral insertion housing (vertical pipe). Direct pipe installation, without housing Some electrodes are designed for their direct installation. This makes them cheaper. 8 Housed electrode 53 40. 9 Electrode installed in adapter with 1/2 screw. 10 Electrode installed in adapter with PG 13,5 screw. Pressurisable electrodes installation Some applications or industrial processes require electrodes that could be pressurised externaly to ensure high electrolyte flow. So, these electrodes must be installed in appropiate pressurisable housing. 2 5 6 3 7 4 10 8 9 5

See essential parts of the electrode, page 4. Protected reference system. The purpose is to prevent reference element contamination and keep the potential as stable as possible. Clogging-free. Either due to the shape, large, no, open, or the type of electrolyte. HF resistance. The membrane s resistance depends on the HF concentration and ph of the sample. Resistance to high temperatures. As continuous working condition or occasional high temperatures, e.g. sterilisation. Can be steam-sterilised. Resists sterilisation-in-place (SIP procedure). Can be placed in autoclave. May be sterilised in autoclave. Electrodes with integrated ATC. They allow measuring ph and temperature simultaneously at the same point. Their main advantage is that they make installation simpler. The two signals ph and temperature are transmitted to the instrument using a single probe and a single cable. Fixed-cable electrodes. When decision making is determined by price. They are cheaper because there are no head and cable connectors. Low-cost electrodes. These are simple electrodes for uncomplicated applications or economical electrodes due to important production numbers. Indicator metal Platinum: recommended for strongly oxidizing samples. Gold: recommended for acid samples, or containing Cr or Fe. 6

ph electrodes with polymer electrolyte These are long-life electrodes. The open facilitates a direct contact between the reference electrolyte and the medium to be measured. Thanks to this contact, the classic problem of clogging is avoided. The reference electrolyte is a solid polymer where variations in concentration take place very slowly, so that the reference potential remains invariable for a long time. 53 35 53 64 Open circular Pressure compensator Reference element Internal open Reference element 2 open s (lateral orifice) 53 35 For wastewater. Temperature probes, C.A.T. Connecting one of these probes to CRISON ph-meters, the user measures ph and temperature simultaneously and display both values on the screen. This feature allows: To compensate the temperature effect on the electrode. To use the ph-meter as a precision thermometer. These are long-life sensors and, unless broken, they will last a lifetime. Pt 100 / Pt 1000 Traditionally, the most commonly-used precision temperature sensors were the Pt 100 type, with a temperature-dependent resistance (TDR) of 100 at 0ºC and a coefficient of 0.38 / ºC. Nowadays people are increasingly using Pt 1000 probes, R = 1000 at 0ºC and 10-times greater coefficient. This makes measuring temperature easier and reduces the distortion caused by the length of the cable. Mounting 55 25 Temperature probe: In immersion probes In 61, In 63 and In 68. In insertion probes In 76, In 77 and In 78. Since they must always be installed next to ph electrodes, CRISON recommends the use of a multisensor housing. In 68, whichs allow up to 3 sensors to be installed together. In flotation probes FL 60 and FL 69. In flow-through chamber CR 60. 55 25 Double temperature probe. The 55 25 temperature compensator is a double temperature probe, with 2 TDR sensors, one Pt 100 and the other Pt 1000 inside. It is held by a PG 13.5 screw cap, avaliable in CRISON housings. Since it has two sensors, one Pt 100 and the other Pt 1000, the 55 25 probe is compatible with both instruments. MP-5 55 26 Temperature probe for pipes. The 55 26 is a temperature probe with integrated Pt 1000* sensor. It is installed directly on a pipe with a 1/2 NPT thread. The 55 26 probe is very robust, because of its stainless-steel sheath. * Upon request, Pt 100. 55 26 Temperature probe: directly on pipes.
