Hog gambrels Specification EAST AFRICAN STANDARD EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY CD/K/704:2010 ICS 67.120 EAC 2010 First Edition 2010

Foreword Development of the East African Standards has been necessitated by the need for harmonizing requirements governing quality of products and services in East Africa. It is envisaged that through harmonized standardization, trade barriers which are encountered when goods and services are exchanged within the Community will be removed. In order to meet the above objectives, the EAC Partner States have enacted an East African Standardization, Quality Assurance, Metrology and Test Act, 2006 (EAC SQMT Act, 2006) to make provisions for ensuring standardization, quality assurance, metrology and testing of products produced or originating in a third country and traded in the Community in order to facilitate industrial development and trade as well as helping to protect the health and safety of society and the environment in the Community. East African Standards are formulated in accordance with the procedures established by the East African Standards Committee. The East African Standards Committee is established under the provisions of Article 4 of the EAC SQMT Act, 2006. The Committee is composed of representatives of the National Standards Bodies in Partner States, together with the representatives from the private sectors and consumer organizations. Draft East African Standards are circulated to stakeholders through the National Standards Bodies in the Partner States. The comments received are discussed and incorporated before finalization of standards, in accordance with the procedures of the Community. Article 15(1) of the EAC SQMT Act, 2006 provides that Within six months of the declaration of an East African Standard, the Partner States shall adopt, without deviation from the approved text of the standard, the East African Standard as a national standard and withdraw any existing national standard with similar scope and purpose. East African Standards are subject to review, to keep pace with technological advances. Users of the East African Standards are therefore expected to ensure that they always have the latest versions of the standards they are implementing. Introduction CD/K/704:2010 Hog gambrels are used for hanging and moving dehaired carcasses of pigs in an abattoir or a bacon factory so as to avoid contamination of the carcasses from floor and to ensure ease in further examination and processing of the carcasses. ISO 16143-2, Stainless steels for general purposes Part 2: Semi-finished products, bars, rods and sections 3 Description The hog gambrel shall consist of a gambrel rod curved at an angle at both the ends and a hook rod at the centre for connection. 4 Material of construction The hog gambrels shall be constructed from the following material: a) Hook rod cast steel conforming to ISO 11973. b) Gambrel rod mild steel conforming to ISO 16143-2. c) Self locking nut conforming to ISO 4014 and ISO 7089. 5 Dimensions The dimensions (in millimeters) of the hook rod and the gambrel rod shall be as given in Figure 1. 6 Requirements Figure 1 Details of hog gambrel 6.1 The weight of a hog gambrel shall be 2.5 kg. 6.2 The hook shall not bend when weighed with a load of 120 kg. 6.3 The gambrel rod shall rotate freely on the hook. 6.4 The hook shall be designed taking into consideration the dimensions of the bar and pipe available for overhead rail system. The hook shall make maximum contact on the rail to ensure easy mobility. 6.5 The-end hooks of the gambrel rod shall be pointed. 2 EAC 2010 All rights reserved

7 Workmanship and finish 7.1 The hog gambrel shall hang horizontal. CD/K/704:2010 7.2 The components shall be free from flaws, burrs, pits and sharp edges. The components shall be galvanized before assembly for the protection from rust and corrosion. 7.3 The welding of the components shall be satisfactory in all respects. It shall not be porous or brittle. 8 Marking and packing 8.1 Marking The hog gambrels shall be marked with the following information: a) Manufacturer's name or trade-mark, if any; b) Year of manufacture; c) Batch or code number; and d) Weight of the gambrel. 8.1.1 The marking shall be done at an appropriate and visible -place. 8.1.2 Each hog gambrel may also be marked with a Certification Mark. 8.2 Packing The hog gambrels shall be packed for safe handling in transit as agreed to between the manufacturer and the purchaser. 9 Sampling The method for drawing representative samples of hog gambrels and the criteria for conformity shall be as given in Annex A. EAC 2010 All rights reserved 3

Annex A (normative) Sampling of hog gambrels A.1 Scale of sampling A.1.1 Lot In any consignment all hog gambrels of the same type, shape and size manufactured from the same material under relatively similar conditions of manufacture shall be grouped together to constitute a lot. A.1.2 For ascertaining the conformity to the requirements of this specification the test shall be carried out separately for the each lot. A.1.3 The number of hog gambrels to be sampled from a lot, for ascertaining conformity to the requirements of this specification, shall be according to col 2 of Table 1. Table 1 Scale of sampling and permissible number of defectives for hog gambrels Number of hog gambrels in a For visual and dimensional tests For tests other than visual and dimensional lot Sample size Permissible number of defectives Sub-sample size Permissible number of defectives (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) Up to 100 5 0 2 0 101 to 300 13 1 3 0 301 to 500 32 3 5 0 501 to 1000 50 5 8 1 1001 and above 80 7 13 1 A.1.4 The hog gambrels shall be selected at random from the lot and for this purpose a random number table as agreed to between the purchaser and the supplier shall be used. If such a table is not available, the following procedure shall be adopted: Starting from any hog gambrel in the lot count them as 1, 2, 3,..., up to r in a systematic manner, where r is equal to the integral part of N/n, N being the total number of hog gambrels in the lot and n the number of hog gambrels to be selected ( see Table 1). Every rth hog gambrel thus counted shall be separated until the requisite number of hog gambrels to be obtained from the lot to give the sample for the test has been obtained. A.2 Number of tests and criteria for conformity A.2.1 Tests for visual and dimensional characteristics The hog gambrels selected at random according to A.1.4 shall be examined for the visual and dimensional characteristics. A hog gambrel failing to satisfy any one or more of these requirements shall be considered as conforming to the requirements for these characteristics if the number of defectives in the sample does not exceed the number given in col 3 of Table 1. A.2.2 Tests other than visual and dimensional If the lot passes the tests for visual and dimensional requirements (see A.2.1), a sub-sample of size given in col4 of Table 1 shall be taken from the hog gambrel selected in A.2.1. Each of the hog gambrels in the sub-sample shall be tested for the requirements of characteristics other than visual and dimensional. A hog gambrel not satisfying any one or more of these requirements shall be regarded as defective. The lot shall be considered to conform to these requirements if the number of defectives in the sub-sample does not exceed the number given in col 5 of Table 1. 4 EAC 2010 All rights reserved
