From Montreal to Kyoto Montreal Protocol (CFC s / Ozone layer) Address the threat of depletion to the ozone layer through the release of CFC s. Kyoto Protocol (CO2 / Global Warming) 1. Enhancement of energy efficiency 2. Increase use of new and renewable forms of energy 3. Limit or reduce emissions of greenhouse gases
Bureau of Energy Efficiency A Statutory body under Ministry of Power, Government of India Trane is a certified ESCO with the BEE As a small initiative Trane recently signed MOU with IDBI for India Chiller Energy Efficiency Project
ECBC Applicable for commercial buildings or building complexes that have; Connected load >500 kw Contract demand >600 kva. Also applicable to all buildings with a conditioned floor area of >1,000 m2 (10,000 ft2). Recommended for all other buildings. The code is presently under voluntary adoption in the country.

LEED-INDIA LEED-INDIA provides building owners, architects, consultants, developers, facility managers and project managers the tools they need to design, construct and operate green buildings. LEED-INDIA promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in the following five key areas: Sustainable site development Water savings Energy efficiency Materials selection and Indoor environmental quality Kohinoor Hospital was awarded Platinum by Leed- India very recently.
LEED / ASHRAE LEED / U.S. Green Buildings New Construction Existing Buildings Commercial Interiors Core and Shell Homes Neighborhood Development ASHRAE Advancing heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education Extensive guidelines covering every aspect of hvac and high performance buildings.
GRIHA Rating System 34 Criteria of the Rating System under 4 Categories 1 Site Selection and Site Planning 2 Building Planning and Construction 3 Building Operation and Maintenance 4 Innovation Griha conceived by TERI and developed jointly by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Govt of India. It is a Green Building Design Evaluation System
Chiller Ratings (Revisited) If energy efficiency is such an important concept, we should know how to measure it. IPLV (integrated part load value)? Hour-by-hour modelling analysis?
Chiller Ratings (Revisited) Clearly there is a consensus that energy efficiency is desirable for economic, environmental and social needs. We should also know how to measure it accurately. Currently IPLV is being used as a substitute for executing a complete hour to hour modelling analysis. IPLV was created by AHRI and is often promoted by some manufacturers to analyse the chiller performance.
Chiller Ratings (Revisited) AHRI has acknowledged that it does not accurately represent a chiller plant operating characteristics. Decisions based on this incomplete data often results in poor predictions of energy use and is important to use the right tools to ensure optimal economic and environmental solutions.
AHRI Standard 550/590 ASHRAE 90.1 uses IPLV to define the minimum part-load value What is the scope of IPLV use? How is the equation defined? What are the assumptions behind the equation? How does it hold up comparing multiple chillers in a plant? What other factors should we be aware of? Understand the Background of Integrated Part Load Value
AHRI Standard 550/590 Derivation of Integrated Part Load Value (IPLV) What is the scope of IPLV use? Average Part-Load Efficiency for a Single Chiller ONLY
A closer look at Chiller ratings IPLV was created to help compare unloading characteristics of similar chillers and not to infer any economic savings. IPLV uses only four operating point with weighting factors i.e 100%,75%, 50% and 25%. IPLV evaluates only single chiller and not multiple chiller as efficiency is related to many variables. IPLV assumed entering condenser water temperature relief. IPLV is dictated by four distinct operating buckets simultaneously on load and lift reduction.
