National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, China National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, China (NCNST) is co-founded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Ministry of Education, on December 31, 2003. NCNST's is committed to build a public technological platform and research facility for nanoscience, which is featured with advanced equipments and open to domestic and international colleagues. While endeavoring to provide support to the nanotechnology development in China, NCNST also contributes to fundamental research in nanoscience and nanotechnology standardization.

Address from the director Dr. Chen Wang As a national research facility for nanoscience and technology, the NCNST is grateful for the generous support from domestic and international colleagues in the past ten years. The main research areas include system integration of nanostructures and devices, standardization of nanotechnology and manufacturing of nanoscale materials, biological effects and safety of nanostructures, fundamental research on nanofabrication, manufacturing of nanostructures and analytical technology. It can be envisioned that the nanoresearch community in China could make beneficial contributions to the quest of nanotechnologies in developing economies and international academic communities. We wish to sincerely welcome collaborations with colleagues in all areas of nanoscience and technologies.

About NCNST A young and vigorous research team, which includes many outstanding scientists who have attained international recognition for their scientific contributions World-class infrastructures support and research facilities Cutting-edge research at the forefront of nanoscience Dynamic science education and high-achieving students

Research Focus Nanomaterials Controllable synthesis, organization Nanodevices Development of prototype devices Nanofabrication and assembling Micro- and nano-sensors and integration Nanobiology and medical applications Single molecule\cell behavior Biological and environmental effects of nanostructures Applications in diagnosis of diseases, nanomedicine Instrumentation for nanocharacterization Nanostandardization

Laboratory for Nanomaterials Laboratory for Nanomaterials engages in synthesis and self-assembly of new nanomaterials, and promoting the application of functional nanomaterials in new energy and environment.

Laboratory for Nanodevices The Laboratory for Nanodevices focuses on the fabrication and integration of nanodevices, including novel nanodevice processing and integration method, high sensitive and selective sensing technique based on integrated nanostructures and devices, high efficient energy conversion system and high performance energy storage materials and devices.

Laboratory for Biological Effects of Nanomaterials and Nanosafety Laboratory for Biological Effects of Nanomaterials and Nanosafety mainly includes research on the mutual interactions between nanostructures and biological entities, and the use of nanoscience / technology to explore fundamental problems in life sciences.

Laboratory for Nanocharacterization Laboratory for Nanocharacterization is aimed at elucidating the structureproperty relationship of low-dimensional nanostructured materials, exploring the assembly and functionality of molecular and nanoscale entities, and developing the methodology and instrumentation for measurement of optical, electrical, thermal, magnetic, mechanical properties of nanomaterials.

Laboratory for Nanostandardization Laboratory for Nanostandardization performs research on nanotechnology standards, including documentary standards for measurement and characterization, fabrication of nanoscale reference materials, and nanoscale metrological studies.

Laboratory for Nanomanufacturing and Applications Nanomanufacturing has been defined as an approach to design, produce, control, modify, manipulate, and assemble nanometer-scale elements or features for the purpose of realizing a product or system that exploits properties seen at the nanoscale. The Laboratory for Nanomanufacturing and Applications focuses on organic-inorganic multifunctional nanocomposites, hierarchically structured nanocomposites, polymer based photoelectric nanocomposites, and nano-structured surfaces and coatings. The key technology achieved in these researches has its goal enabling the mass production of reliable and economical nanoscale materials, structures, devices, and systems for diverse applications in energy, environment, communications and bio-sensors.

The Testing Laboratory for Nanostructures The Testing Laboratory for Nanostructures is a service unit of NCNST, which maintains versatile facilities and develops techniques in the field of characterization and measurement of nanostructures to support and promote the research and innovation of nanotechnology both inside and outside NCNST.

Nanofabrication Laboratory Nanofabrication Laboratory has a total clean-room area of over 700 m² (about 100 m² for class 100 and 400 m² for class 1000) in which there are diversified state-of-theart fabrication facilities and some characterization tools available. The cleanroom is capable of processing various materials with a maximum size of 4 inch. As a public nanofabrication platform, the laboratory is accessible for the users of micro- and nano-technology.

Collaboration and Exchanges NCNST has better collaboration with many research institutes and universities from countries, such Germany, France, UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, United States, Russia, South Korea, Japan etc. NCNST has hosted 5-6 bilateral or multilateral international conference in nanotechnology. The biennial conference International Conference on Nanoscience and Technology, China has been successfully held since 2005. These activities promoted the general research capabilities in nanoscience research in China and stimulated discussions and communications in this fast evolving field. NCNST has launched a new academic journal Nanoscale with RSC Publishing, providing a new platform for communication in nanoscience society.

Postgraduate Program The research-oriented postgraduate programs aim to develop students into scientists who are capable of conducting independent and original research. In addition to the generic programs of individual disciplines, NCNST offers Nanoscience and Technology, Physical Chemistry, Materials and Condensed Matter Physics at the postgraduate level. Doctor of Philosophy(PhD), PhD programs require a combination of coursework and independent research, with major emphasis placed on research. Normal Duration of Study: 3 years if a relevant master's degree is earned prior to entering the PhD program; 5 years with an undergraduate degree.

Reynier PhD student in NCNST, from Guba, he won outstanding student award for three consecutive years. I arrived in Beijing with almost no idea of what nano means and with zero lab experience. With the valuable help of professors and students, and with time and patience, I am becoming familiar with new terminology and laboratory equipment. In the Laboratory for Nanocharacterization, through use of Scanning Probe Microscopy, I have been involved in a project to study the wetting processes at nanometer scale under the influence of a high electric field, as well as physical and chemical properties of materials surfaces at microscopic scale.

Anil PhD student in NCNST, from India, he won outstanding student award for two consecutive years. Most experimental apparatus can be operated by students after properly raining. Operating these sophisticated equipments by yourself is exciting process

Highlights of Research Achievements NCNST s researchers work toward greater understanding of matter at the atomic level and play a pioneering role internationally. Leading discoveries include: Functional assembly of nanoparticles and optical properties Carbon nanomaterials and applications Nanotechnology -based energy conversion and storage system Biological Effects of nanomaterials and nanosafety Nano-medicine delivery system
