Extreme Sealing Tape 4412N Exterior Durability Report Technical Bulletin October, 21 Summary of Technical Data: This report provides accelerated aging data, temperature and humidity resistance, and solvent immersion resistance of 3M Extreme Sealing Tape, 4412N. Current and ongoing testing has produced positive performance results through three years. The acrylic adhesive used in the 3M Extreme Sealing Tape 4412N is manufactured from the same technology platform as the 3M VHB double coated acrylic foam tapes. The 3M VHB tapes have been used very successfully for both indoor and outdoor applications for over 3 years. The product remained well bonded to the substrate and the ionomer backing remained tough after 2 hours of accelerated weathering (high temp, strong UV and water spray) See chart #1. The tensile strength of the ionomer backing remains unaffected after high heat and humidity aging (185 F [85 C] and 85% RH) See chart #2. Static shear testing at elevated temperatures supports a short term (minutes/hours) temperature exposure of 3 F (149 C) and a long term (days/weeks) temperature exposure of 2 F (93 C) see chart #3 Adhesion data after exposure (solvent immersion, elevated temperature and cycle) indicate very good resistance to many common industrial solvents as well as elevated temperature and cycle conditions see chart #4. Product Description: The 3M Extreme Sealing Tape 4412N tape is a very thick, very tacky, single coated tape that has many potential uses for a wide variety of difficult sealing applications. As a single coated tape, the sealing is generally done by oversealing an existing joint or penetration, as opposed to between surface sealing applications done with a double coated tape, gasket, or liquid sealant/adhesive. One specific, intended use for this tape is roof-to-trim sealing and sealing around roof top mechanical fasteners on commercial vehicles to eliminate large quantities of liquid sealants. This tape was specifically designed for outdoor exposure to direct sunlight, as well as temperature and humidity extremes. Painting the tape with a compatible and durable outdoor coating is one method to provide additional protection against the effects of UV radiation. The basic construction of the tape is shown below: Disposable, clear polyester release liner; 3 mils Top, non-adhesive, acrylic/ethylene ionomer backing; 4 mils Thick, closed cell acrylic foam adhesive; 75 mils Note: While this data will show the durability capability of this tape, durability in any specific application is dependant on achieving a good level of adhesion to the substrates being sealed and in having a design where the static and dynamic stresses acting on the tape are within the product strength capability. It is also important to understand that the sealing performance of this tape is very dependent on application technique. More specifically, surfaces must be properly prepared prior to tape application and the tape must be pressed into tight interfaces and properly rolled down on all surfaces.

Accelerated aging of 3M Extreme Sealing Tape 4412N: Ongoing accelerated aging is being conducted at the 3M Weathering Resource Center in St Paul, MN. As of this writing over 2, hours of exposure have been logged in each of two separate test cycles. The samples retained their strength and adhesion after the 2 hour cycle. Test samples have also been exposed to outdoor natural weathering conditions in Arizona and Florida. The two accelerated weathering conditions / cycles are described below: 3M Accelerated Weathering Cycle A: An accelerated weathering exposure based on ASTM G155 Cycle 1, but run at higher irradiance and slightly higher temperature so as to provide a 2x to 3x acceleration over ASTM G155 Cycle 1. The xenon arc light source is specially filtered to very closely match the ultraviolet component of sunlight and still provide the complete UV-visible solar spectrum. ASTM G155 cycle one includes 12 minutes of light only with black panel temperature of 145 F (63 C) and 18 minutes of light with water spray with no control of air temperature. 3M Accelerated Weathering Cycle B: An accelerated weathering exposure based on ASTM G154 that utilizes UVA-34 fluorescent ultraviolet lamps and is run at high irradiance and temperature. For materials that degrade primarily from exposure to high-energy solar UV irradiation, this test provides 2x to 3x acceleration over ASTM G155 Cycle 1. There is also a cyclical water condensation component to this accelerated weathering cycle. Tape Sample Preparation and Tape Adhesion Testing: 1" x 4" long strips of 3M Extreme Sealing Tape 4412N were bonded to clean, bare aluminum test coupons with no additional surface preparation. The clear, matte finish, disposable release liner was removed from the non-adhesive top side of the 3M Extreme Sealing Tape 4412N. Samples were then exposed separately to 3M Accelerated Weathering Cycle A or Cycle B. To date, samples were removed and tested at 5 hours, 1 hours, and 2 hours. Control samples were kept in CTH room (constant temperature and humidity room) at 7 F (21 C) and 5% relative humidity. Anodized aluminum foil peel strips were bonded to the 1" x 4" piece of tape after the weathering cycles using 3M VHB Tape 5925. Ninety degree peel adhesion tests were run based on ASTM D333. Crosshead speed was 12 inches per minute. Either two or four samples were tested at each exposure condition. Only one test was run for the control at 5 and 2 hours exposure. Typical 9 degree peel adhesion test of 3M Extreme Sealing Tape 4412N showing adhesive split mode of failure to bare aluminum. 3M VHB Black Tape 5925 was used to bond the aluminum foil peel strip to the non-adhesive, ionomer top surface of the 3M Extreme Sealing Tape 4412N. - 2 -

Visual comparison of freshly applied 3M Extreme Sealing Tape 4412N (left); and 3M Extreme Sealing Tape 4412N after 2 hours in 3M accelerated aging conditions A (right). Visual observations after 2 hours of accelerated aging exposure indicated no cracking, or chalking of the 3M Extreme Sealing Tape 4412N. As indicated in the above graph, the tape still had more than 1 pounds per inch width of peel adhesion strength. The tape appearance changes from semi-opaque to semi-translucent. This same appearance change likely happens in natural aging over a longer time period. The control photograph on the left was aged on the panel for only a few days at room temperature. - 4 -

Chart #3 Static Shear of 3M Extreme Sealing Tape 4412N at Elevated Temperatures ASTM D-3654 (1" x 1", 1 grams, stainless steel) Panel Prep: 1 wipe 5/5 IPA/water; Prime with 3M Adhesion Promoter AP-111 Minutes 12 1 8 6 4 2 25 F / 121 C 3 F / 149 C 35 F / 177 C 3M Extreme Sealing Tape 4412N held 1 grams of weight at all three elevated temperatures for the full 1, minutes. The samples at 3 F (149 C) turned light brown and the samples at 35 F (177 C) turned darker brown. There was some odor detected at the 35 F (177 C) temperature. Some discoloration is expected for organic materials exposed to elevated temperatures. Based on this data, the tape should not be adversely affected by normal temperature variations encountered during outdoor exposures. The long term high temperature tolerance of this tape (days and weeks) is 2 F (93 C). The short term high temperature tolerance of this tape (minutes and hours) is 3 F (149 C). - 6 -

Immersion Resistance, Temperature Resistance, Temperature Cycling Resistance, & High Humidity Resistance: Chart #4 Exposure Data 3M Extreme Sealing Tape 4412N ASTM D333 (modified to 9 degrees, stainless test panels) (Notes: Immersions are 4 hr dwells in test fluid, Cycle is 4 hrs/158 F (7 C), 4 hrs/-2 F (-29 C), 16 hrs/rt) Panel Prep: 1 wipe 5/5 IPA/water; Prime with 3M Adhesion Promoter AP-111 Lbs/inch 1 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 Elevated temperatures typically increase the wet-out of the adhesive onto the test substrates and increase the adhesive peel strengths. This data was generated without backing the 3M Extreme Sealing Tape 4412N with 3M VHB Tape 5925. Most samples retained reasonable strength and color after the immersion condition. The only exception on the color retention was the gasoline immersion sample where the tape turned slightly yellow in color. Some reduction in peel adhesion performance is expected with these severe immersion conditions. Despite the immersion, the tape continues to bond well to the stainless test panel. The lowest performance, obtained after the immersion in gasoline, still achieved peel adhesive strength over 4 lbs per inch width of tape. This level of adhesion should still be useful for most sealing applications. Total immersion is a far more strenuous condition than an occasional splash condition. This tape, as with most tapes made of organic materials, is not recommended for continuous immersion in organic solvents. - 7 -

Summary Comments and Precautions: Unless otherwise indicated, the surface preparation in the testing above was cleaning with a 5:5 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water. All of this testing was done on either bare aluminum or bare stainless steel as indicated. Both bare aluminum and bare stainless steel are materials with high surface energy, which make them receptive to adhesive bonding. Substrates that do not have high surface energy (e.g. some painted metals and most plastics) generally need to be either abraded and cleaned, or treated with an adhesion promoter to obtain maximum adhesive bonds (especially applications subjected to occasional spalshes of organic solvents). The end user must evaluate the tape in each specific application (as the substrate changes) to ensure that 3M Extreme Sealing Tape 4412N and the chosen surface preparation meets the total use requirements.
