2. INTRODUCTION The RHA100 unit has been designed to allow the rapid and easy application of the sand/gel mixture to the railhead in situations where train borne equipment is impractical. The RHA100 unit is primarily used by a single operator on short stretches of track, where treated rail head is required quickly and conveniently. It is possible for the operator to link a number of RHA100 units together, however we recommend that no more than three are linked. The units can be loaded with up to two containers of sand/gel or a mixture of both, in each one. This gives a total of up to 6 containers, which gives the operator a much greater range in comparison to most other units currently available on the market. Any and all adjustments to the equipment must be carried out in a place of safety and never on or near the line. Specifications Dimensions (Single unit) Height (handle upright): Width: Length: Length (Double unit): Weight (Single unit): 835mm 235mm 500mm 960mm 6.25kg (unladen) Product Compliance Harmonised Standards: EN 8888:2004 Technical Product Documentation Directive 93/68/EEC CE Marking. 3. BENEFITS OF USING THE RHA100 APPLICATOR Immediate low cost solution to wheel slippage on the line, preventing costly delays. Convenient solution to traction problems where train borne sand application methods are expensive or the traction problem is localised. The RHA100 unit is lightweight, easy to handle, and is easily operated and maintained by a single operator. The RHA100 unit can be used singly or as a multiple unit to apply either sand or gel or both simultaneously. (see pictures ) The operating range of the RHA 100 applicator is approximately 300 metres per container before refill. The RHA100 applicator has been designed and manufactured with ease of use, cleaning and maintenance in mind, having few moving and wearing parts. The RHA100 applicator is manufactured substantially from plastics and is safer to use near third rail without risk of shock or injury compared to other metal construction applicators. 6. HOW DOES THE RHA100 WORK The RHA100 unit(s) is/are pushed manually along the rail to be treated. The applicator containers are mounted with the nozzles almost in contact with the rail head. Once the operator is ready to begin, the container cap should be replaced with a nozzle and the seal should be broken. This will allow the contents of the container to be gravity fed onto the rail head leaving a small bead. There are a number of methods of application, these are as follows: Twin unit with gel in the front unit and sand in the rear. Gel is fed onto the rail head, and sand is dropped onto it, adhering it to the rail head. Once the train moves over the treated area the gel/sand mixture is spread over the whole head, greatly improving the friction of the wheel/rail interface, hence improving the traction. Single units can be used applying just gel or sand independently. Alternatively, a gel/sand mixture can be used to treat the rail simultaneously. Single units can be used as above with up to two further units, attached only to carry additional containers (4 qty.). 7. PREPARING A CONTAINER FOR USE Before mounting the RHA100 on the track, the dispenser containers should be prepared. Remove the nozzle cap and rubber seal Remove the blanking cap and insert the nozzle MAN-M-O-214_00 08/10/2015 9

Break the foil seal on the container and refit the nozzle cap. Fit the bottle in the RHA100 applicator Note: The gel/sand will begin to run immediately. Start walking soon after loading. 8. MOUNTING AND DISMOUNTING THE RHA100 Note: Although the RHA100 has rollers fitted with ball races, it cannot be pushed along the ground. The RHA100 has a weight of 6.25kg, and can be lifted by one person. The handle can be extended before or after mounting on the rail. Ensure that the flanges on the roller are sat either side of the rail head. MAN-M-O-214_00 08/10/2015 10

9. LOADING THE RHA100 The RHA100 is loaded as shown in the pictures below. For added range, up to 3 units can be used. The lower bottle is fitted as shown. The upper bottle should be placed with the flat surfaces in contact i.e. inverted. 10. LINKING THE RHA100 UNITS TOGETHER The RHA100 units can be easily linked together. The units should first be mounted on the rail section to be treated. Lift the leading unit clear of the rail head and align the latching lugs with the slots on the front of the unit behind it. Insert the leading unit into the slotted plastic latching plates on the front of the rear unit. Picture showing the linking pegs engaged in the slotted keep plates. Note: A maximum of 3 RHA100 units can be linked together. MAN-M-O-214_00 08/10/2015 11

11. USING THE RHA100 Once the units have been loaded with live containers it is important the operator begins to walk immediately. The size of the bead applied to the rail head will depend on the speed at which the operator is walking. It will soon become apparent to the operator how quickly to walk. The flow of the sand and gel can be partially controlled by loosening the filler cap to allow more air in to replace the contents. If for any reason the operator needs to stop, it is important that the containers are removed from the RHA100 and inverted to ensure that a build up of gel/sand is avoided as this could result in the unit becoming blocked. If the unit does become blocked and difficult to use, it should be rinsed immediately with water to remove excess gel or sand. (See maintenance section) MAN-M-O-214_00 08/10/2015 12

14. GENERAL MAINTENANCE The maintenance requirements of the RHA100 unit are minimal, since the unit has been designed and manufactured with this in mind. The RHA100 gel and sand applicator is manufactured predominantly from plastic materials, for precautionary safety in third rail applications, as well as for minimum degradation of component parts. Build up of sand and gel in this area. After and sometimes during use, the applicators will require cleaning due to a build up of gel and sand around the rollers and bearing area. The bearings will not become contaminated with either gel or sand as they are sealed. However, the build up of gel and sand around the faces of the spacers bushes (item 7) and the rollers (item 5) will cause the rollers to lock. This can be easily remedied by rinsing the units with water. NOTE: It is essential that the units are cleaned after every use as a build up of gel or sand will prevent the rollers from rotating and will cause wear. The following items should be inspected before use, any worn or damaged items should be replaced immediately. RHA100-01 Roller RHA100-07 Linking Plate RHA100-11 Linking Peg 0405600002 Bearing These are items which can wear during use and which are essential to the continued and safe use of the RHA 100 unit.
