Corrosion inhibitor for aluminium / aluminium alloys: Sample Thickness ø Test method Results 2K-EP-sb+2,0% G50 88µm Filiform test < 2mm after 504 h 88µm Salt spray test 2 mm after 1008 h 91µm CC with 14d storage in water Before storage: CC 0 130µm Recoating on CA8000 PPG Levelling ok, CC 0 89µm Pendulum hardness (n=5) Erichsen cupping ø = 18 5,6mm 2K-EP-wb+2% G50 74µm Filiform test < 3 mm after 504 h 75µm Salt spray test 1 mm after 1008 h 74µm CC with 14d storage in water Before storage: CC 0 126µm Recoating on CA8000 PPG Levelling ok, CC 0 76µm Pendulum hardness (n=5) Erichsen cupping ø = 52 5,6mm General conclusion: Additive G50 improved corrosion protection for filiform and in salt spray test. It has no negative influence on adhesion and recoating as well as on the hardness and flexibility of the coating film. 7

Corrosion inhibition for paints & coatings: Reference: 1K acrylic water based with 10.1 % zinc phosphate 1K acrylic water based with 5 % zinc phosphate and with 2 % Additive G50 wb 250 h salt spray, 60 µm 250 h salt spray, 60 µm Additive G50 is a corrosion inhibitor suitable for many coating systems, in synergism with anti-corrosion pigments (like zinc phosphate) or as sole corrosion inhibitor e.g. transparent coatings. Here Additive G50 acts as partial replacement for zinc phosphate. 8

Corrosion inhibition for paints & coatings: Reference: 2K PU solvent based, with 10.1 % zinc phosphate 2K PU solvent based, without zinc phosphate but with 2 % Additive G50 504 h salt spray, 60 µm 504 h salt spray, 60 µm Additive G50 is a corrosion inhibitor suitable for many coating systems, in synergism with anti-corrosion pigments (like zinc phosphate) or as sole corrosion inhibitor e.g. transparent coatings. Here Additive G50 acts as full replacement for zinc phosphate. 9

Inhibitor for aluminium flakes / aluminium pigments: Additive G50 can also act as a treatment for aluminium flakes/pigments in water based coatings, preventing the oxidation and the creation of hydrogen. Typical treatments of aluminium flakes/pigments are by chromates orsio 2 / Silanes Other treatments, like resins or phosphoric compounds, provide worse results, even under less aggressive / mild conditions. Measurement of evolved hydrogen substrate (aluminium 74014) hydrogen untreated aluminium right away Silane-treated standard aluminium factor 1 Additive G50-treated* aluminium factor 3.2 Silane-treated standard aluminium + G50* factor 4 *0.4 % emulsions of Additive G50 3) A. Brinkmann, A. Zockoll; Stabilisierung von Korrosionsschutzpigmenten, Farbe und Lack, 2 (2010) 28-32. 10

Corrosion inhibition for lubricants & metalworking: Additive G50 is useful as a multi metal corrosion inhibitor for many different kinds of lubricants and metalworking fluids. Through a proper emulsion it can be used in lubricant oils, metalworking fluids like neat oils, soluble coolants or synthetic coolants and special corrosion preventives. Besides providing corrosion inhibition, Additive G50 offers additional properties very useful for metalworking: EP / AW properties (proved by Brugger and VKA test) Co-emulsifier Wetting agent AA50 series in 3 % NaCl 5 % MWF emulsion 5 % MWF + 0.1 % Additive G50 11

Temporary corrosion protection: Application: clean fresh panel dipping RT drying testing Substrate: AA2024 untreated 0.5 % G50 treated untreated 0.5 % G50 treated 100 h salt water 1000 h salt water 24 h salt spray 250 h salt spray 12

Temporary corrosion protection: Additive G50 was originally developed for aluminium alloy AA2024 alloy (mainly composed of Al, Cu, Mg and Mn) but is also strong on other metals and alloys! Cu 10 h SWT 72 h CuSn8 (bronze) 10 h SWT 72 h CuZn27 (brass) 10 h SST 100 h SWT: Salt water test with 3 % NaCl SST: Salt spray test Zn 120 h SWT 120 h DX51 hot dipped steel 200 h SWT 200 h DC01 galvanized steel 48 h SWT 100 h 13

Temporary corrosion protection: Additive G50 S on ST14 steel, applied through a paraffinic base oil. The dosage of Additive G50 S is 1.0% in the oil. All competitors (coded B, C, M, N and W) are commercially available products for temporary metal protection, rust removal, lubricating, penetration of rust and moisture displacement. B C M N W 24 h 48 h 24 h 24 h 48 h 48 h Compared to the competitors the simple formulation with Additive G50 S shows good results. Actually it showed least corrosion plus the best, most even film forming. 14

Additive G50 is roughly divided into two parts, one is a lipophilic backbone and the other are hydrophilic anchors. These anchors have a strong adsorption to metal surfaces. Non polare Polymeric backbone Polyoxyalkylene Metalophilic anchors Acidic groups polare Result: Functional anchors go onto the metal surface while polymeric backbone protects the anchors and seals as a second layer in one polymer 15

Solubility of Additive G50 s Application of Polymeric Corrosion Inhibitors SOLUBILITY overdosed => insoluble right dosage => soluble PREMIX Additive G50 S Additive G50 Additive G50 wb SOLUBILITY POLARITY Alkanes Aromates Acetates Glycolethers Alkohols Water Salt water PREMIX Aromates or Acetates Any polar medium like polar base oils or binders Polar solvents or amines When polarities are too extreme Additive G50 can t be solved anymore! But if blended through a premix (Additive G50 S/wb) you solve it perfectly! 16

Brief summary of the Additive G50 types: Additive G50 - Real multi metal corrosion protection! - Organic corrosion inhibitor for water* and solvent* borne coatings. - Temporary corrosion protection for storage & transport, without cleaning before repainting. - Corrosion inhibitor for lubricants & metalworking. - Inhibitor for aluminium & zinc flakes and pigments. - Additive G50 wb, ready to use for all water based applications. - Additive G50 T, especially for higher temperatures.
