What is the environment? surroundings in which the organization operates Water Humans Air Natural resources Altitude Global Fauna Land Flora

Every activity we do affects the environment surrounding us. For instance, printing a document by using a printer is an activity; when performing this activity, we need to consume paper, toner, and electricity when operating the printer machine. Consumption of paper and electricity are the environmental aspects of this activity; therefore, the environmental impact of these environmental aspects is the use of natural resources, because paper is made from trees and electricity is generated from oil, gas, or coal. An environmental aspect is any potential interaction that your business processes have with the environment. When these interactions happen they will have an impact on the environment, either positive or negative. So we could say the relationship between Environmental Aspects and Environmental Impacts can be best described as CAUSE and EFFECT.

Environmental aspects vs. impacts ASPECTS Plain paper IMPACTS Paper Electricity Toner PRINTER Paper waste Toner waste Noise CAUSE Document EFFECT

Environmental - impacts An environmental impact is any change to the environment, whether adverse or beneficial, wholly or partially resulting from an organisation s environmental aspects. The next slide gives some examples of environmental impacts and their related environmental aspects. Can you think of some environmental impacts associated with our company?

Environmental - impacts Air pollution: Emissions from transport, heating, etc. Water pollution: Discharge of polluted water, sanitary waste Contamination of soil and groundwater: Leakage from pipes Use of natural resources: Electricity use, natural gas use Waste: Used oil, general trash

What is the Environmental Management System (EMS)? The EMS is a tool that helps our company to identify, manage, monitor, and control environmental issues in a holistic manner. Based on the PDCA cycle - Plan - Do - Check - Act, a systematic approach. To learn more about the PDCA cycle, you can read the article Plan-Do-Check-Act in the ISO 14001 standard Easy integration with other standards. Like other ISO management systems, it uses a High-Level Structure. This means it can be integrated easily into any existing ISO management system. For example ISO 9001 Quality system will have the same format as that of ISO 14001. Like all ISO management system standards, ISO 14001 includes the need for continual improvement of an organization s systems and approach to environmental concerns.

Standard and Procedure review Read through the Line Station TP 42 appendix Environmental Procedure for Athens and refer to ALT/QC/092g to identify the relevant standard clause that each paragraph relates to.
