Every activity we do affects the environment surrounding us. For instance, printing a document by using a printer is an activity; when performing this activity, we need to consume paper, toner, and electricity when operating the printer machine. Consumption of paper and electricity are the environmental aspects of this activity; therefore, the environmental impact of these environmental aspects is the use of natural resources, because paper is made from trees and electricity is generated from oil, gas, or coal. An environmental aspect is any potential interaction that your business processes have with the environment. When these interactions happen they will have an impact on the environment, either positive or negative. So we could say the relationship between Environmental Aspects and Environmental Impacts can be best described as CAUSE and EFFECT.

To learn more about the PDCA cycle, you can read the article Plan-Do-Check-Act in the ISO 14001 standard Easy integration with other standards. Like other ISO management systems, it uses a High-Level Structure. This means it can be integrated easily into any existing ISO management system. For example ISO 9001 Quality system will have the same format as that of ISO 14001. Like all ISO management system standards, ISO 14001 includes the need for continual improvement of an organization s systems and approach to environmental concerns.
