Embedded Analytics: Turning Data-Driven Apps into Actionable Insights

Introduction The shift from IT-centric business intelligence to data driven analytics is accelerating. The traditional model of business intelligence querybased, limited data sets, reports that take days or weeks can no longer keep up with the demands of modern business. What s driving this trend is the exponential growth in data, its complexity and the increasing awareness of the power of that data by everyone from the CEO to the rank-and-file business user. As data pours in from both inside and outside systems, business intelligence is under pressure to keep pace and produce near real-time processing and analysis. Data characteristics, contexts, behaviors and interplay across evolving business ecosystems continue to grow and change. Insights, not reports, are the new currency of business, and nearly every role relies on the insights gleaned from analytics to succeed at their job. These business users increasingly expect sophisticated analytics in the palm of their hands, delivered in an engaging, consumer-like experience. This is driving organizations of every size, in every industry, to look beyond BI as they build and embed analytics into the business process backbone of the enterprise and deliver actionable insights to everyone from frontline business user to the broader ecosystem of partners, suppliers, and even customers. Transforming data into insights and providing a broader scope of decision-making, increasingly more automated is putting pressure on development teams to leverage best-in-class web and open source technologies to build new classes of applications and to integrate analytics into operational workflows, search and data presentation. Time to market, reusability, short learning curve, cloud and infrastructure-ready are all key considerations. The traditional model of business intelligence query-based, limited data sets, reports that take days or weeks can no longer keep up with the demands of modern business. What are the market requirements? Developers, who are often not familiar with traditional BI approaches, now need cloud native application development tools or a platform, which is flexible and includes open source components to make it far simpler to build and deploy data driven applications at scale without requiring BI specialized knowledge.

Embedded analytics holds the promise of integrating the power of data analytics into today s data-driven applications, infrastructures and analytic workflows. But it s easier said than done. Current BI tools focus on reporting and come with a heavy supporting platform. What developers really need especially those unfamiliar with BI - is an easy way to embed best-in-class analytics within a pre-existing stack solution. Specifically, using a cloud platform that s open and flexible enough to support the development of a wide range of data driven applications and use cases spanning many industries and functions. For data driven analytics, users need access to insights that are tailored to their roles and desired outcomes. And because every enterprise is now part of a larger, connected ecosystem, any analytics solution must extend to encompass delivery of insights upstream to partners and suppliers and downstream to customers. Introducing our new cloud analytics developer platform with the Qlik Associative Engine It s been said that even an entry-level smartphone today boasts more than a million times NASA s total computing power when it sent the Apollo astronauts to the moon. The same phenomenon is happening to data- driven analytics: even the most powerful analytics engine can now be embedded in any application, platform or analytic workflow and delivered in the palm of your hand. Qlik Core TM, currently in beta, introduces a cloud analytics development platform built with the Qlik Associative Engine, an embeddable analytics engine that developers can use to build, extend and deploy fast, interactive data-driven applications anywhere. Developers can quickly build data-driven applications within their existing dev-ops infrastructure. By leveraging Docker container technology, the engine allows for highly scalable application deployment in modern cloud infrastructures. With Qlik Core, developers can quickly combine multiple, large data sources with Qlik s Associative Engine, process complex analytics calculations and reap the benefits of automatic indexing of data relationships across data sets.

Qlik Core harnesses the full power of the Qlik Associative Engine, Engine API, and Qlik-authored open source libraries in container technology to deliver an agile, open, and flexible platform for building, deploying, and extending custom analytical applications for integration into any project. Embed anywhere Cloud ready Open source Cloud friendly architecture enables easy integration into projects with a smaller, lighter, containerized engine for the stack or an analytics platform. Cloud architected including Docker container technology and Kubernetes enables easier integration into projects and a fully secure and personalized solution per tenant. Nearly every component in Qlik Core is available and developed as an open-source project. Qlik s R&D organization encourages developers to explore the associated GitHub repositories and create repositories, file issues, and send pull requests when working with Qlik Core. Six Qlik authored open source libraries are included so developers have a range of web technology accelerators: after-works.js: CLI for automated tests in web projects leonardo-ui: Web UI component CSS library enigma.js: JavaScript library for consuming Qlik Associative Engine halyard.js: data loading library picasso.js: powerful visualization framework mira: orchestration and session management

Scalable To handle the levels expected of today s and tomorrow s cloud computing environments. Qlik Core s Linux-based engine allows for scaling and deployment and this scalability enables more complex data models and analytics. Elastic Leverages Docker container technology to allow for elastic expanding and contracting of data topology to handle spikes in demand. Flexible Allows developers to embed the Qlik Associative Engine with a pre-existing stack solution providing simple, familiar building blocks for crafting a spectrum of analytics solutions and capabilities for any organization. Built for big data Drawing the highly-regarded Qlik Associative Engine, Qlik Core can ingest massive data sets from any number of disparate data sources. This allows organizations to handle complex data integration scenarios without the need for external tools or data warehouses. The Qlik Advantage As a longtime leader in visual analytics solutions Qlik has been named a leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for BI eight years in a row Qlik is widely recognized for its innovative approach to analytics. Companies of all sizes, across all industries and geographies, use Qlik solutions to visualize and explore information, generate insight and make better decisions. Qlik s enterpriseready platform is backed by the power of its unique Associative Difference, which allows teams to freely explore every connection, across all of their data, at the speed of thought. Users of all kinds can quickly and easily delve into massive amounts of data, from multiple sources, as they follow their own path to insight. Low cost to entry With a free to develop, pay to deploy pricing structure, even individual developers can now leverage the full power of the Qlik Associative Engine in a cloud-ready platform without the need for taking on a full stack enterprise BI solution. By combining the power of its core analytics engine with a cloud-ready, open-source platform, Qlik is delivering an embeddable analytics solution that has almost unlimited possibilities for developers. Qlik Core allows developers to build rich, leading-edge, data-driven applications and deploy them at the scale needed in today s business environment. For organizations, Qlik Core is the key to moving beyond basic BI reporting by making it easy to custom build analytics that connect a far greater range of data sources and deliver insights quickly to more users. As a huge first step, Qlik Core gives developers access to leading-edge technologies without needing to install, manage or buy additional infrastructure. How Qlik Goes Beyond BI Healthcare A healthcare services organization wants to embed analytics in its new medical portal for physician and healthcare networks worldwide. The portal has the potential for advanced analysis capabilities of drugs, medical devices, treatments, and reactions using a massive data set. Building and deploying with Qlik Core, the solution will be elastic enough to easily serve peak traffic of about 10,000 simultaneous connections and still handle seasonality and spikes in traffic caused by events such as an epidemic. Subscribers will enjoy the ability to visualize data and glean insights as they explore and drill down further, using criteria such as age, gender, weight, and geography. Check out this sample portal here

High-tech sales portal If a high-technology company wants to align its internal sales organization with partner sales organizations, the right solution could be a custom analytics solution that delivers updated CRM and ERP data in a consumer-like mobile application. Opportunities, forecasts and end-customer content can be tailored for each individual or entity. Because it s designed for Linux, Qlik Core is perfect for building a highly scalable custom analytics application that handles tens of thousands of casual users weekly. The application will allow users to understand performance against plan and spot gaps in accounts, inventory, and supply chain. The result will be a more data-driven sales organization that s agile, proactive, and has much better insights into the overall plan performance, including visibility into where gaps are occurring and what actions to take. Hospitality If a hospitality chain could bring together all its disparate sets of customer data point of sale, loyalty activities, membership status, gaming behavior it could better serve its customers with offers, rewards, and experiences. Once a painstaking task to build, today even a global organization can quickly connect all its data sources leveraging the Qlik Associative Engine. Massive data from a wide range of sources including real-time data tied to location can be ingested, processed and then surface analytic insights to enhance targeted marketing campaigns that can be sent from the Qlik Core application or powered platform through either SMS or email. With Qlik Core, the hospitality chain can analyze the behavior of their members more effectively as they can drive more revenues by identifying more accurate upsell and cross-sell opportunities.

Use Case Scenarios Essential analytics tool for the Developer s toolbox For developers, Qlik Core makes a powerful new addition to their analytics toolbox. Even if they re not familiar with traditional BI approaches, any developer who works with APIs and open source can quickly integrate analytics into any project they re working on. Embedded Analytics: ex.
