Earth Resources Engineering Curricula @ UniBO DICAM Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering Alma Mater Studiorum Universitàdi Bologna Overview ERE @ UniBO The sustainability of human society on Earth is likely to be one of the dominant challenges of the 21st century. General Framework: Outlook for 21 Century Population growing Urbanization and Industrialization increasing Life Stiyle change and require for energy Need for.. Produce.. More and more resources (natural or recycled) Advanced Systems for Energy production and management extensive waste Increasing of pollution Environmental degradation Threat to human health Climate Change 2
Overview ERE @ UNIBO Needed are better engineering solutions for a sustainable planet The Master of Science in Earth Resources Engineering (ERE) degree develop effective solutions to these complex and multidisciplinary problems, reconciling a deep concern for the environment with the needs of our global industrialized society 3 Learning Outcomes ERE @ UNIBO The central theme of ERE is the conscientious management of our finite natural resources: Minerals Fuels Energy Water land. Students taking ERE Programme will attain a broad background in environmental engineering and earth resources covering: Main Fields water resources pollution prevention energy resource economics Recycling Reclamation health Water Resources Energy and Materials Sustainable waste management 4
Learning Outcomes ERE @ UNIBO The basic issues are related to: Water resources provide capacity for understanding the variability in the context of decisions for water resources and related sectors of impact; Improve skills for integrated risk assessment and management for operations and design, as well as for regional policy analysis and management. Stress a sustainable monitoring and remediation of wastewater and groundwater. 5 Learning Outcomes ERE @ UNIBO The basic issues are related to: Energy and materials Knowledge on the availability of natural resources, their spatial distribution, the economic and environmental cost of resource extraction, Research avenues for increasing energy utilization efficiency, Develop technologies for efficiency improvement in the generation of energy from fossil fuels, Develop technologies for addressing the environmental concerns over the use of fossil fuels air quality health impacts focus on the consequences of energy use 6
Learning Outcomes ERE @ UNIBO The basic issues are related to: Sustainable waste management Recycling: the next best thing to do after waste reduction; Composting: both aerobic and anaerobic, (is the next step in the hierarchy of waste management) Waste to energy: processing wastes to produce energy Waste to Chemicals/Materials: organic waste biorefinery Landfilling: constructing sanitary landfills that prevent liquid effluents from contaminating ground and surface. 7 Bachelor in Earth Resources Engineering Duration: 3 years Requirement: 180 ECTS (1 US point = 2 ECTS) Compulsory courses: 142 ECTS Electives: 24 ECTS Final thesis: 3 ECTS ETCS: European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System 8
