Specialist projects All projects, whether involving heavy lifts or towage, or both, have one thing in common. That is the need for qualified, competent and experienced surveyors. This is a prerequisite and if not present in the survey equation it is possible that unwanted situations may arise. This is the reason Inchcape Shipping Services [ISS] employ as their staff surveyors: Master Mariners Marine Engineers Naval Architects who have years of experience in the inspection of ships, their machinery and their cargoes. No matter what the inspection requirements are ISS always have the right surveyor to do the job at hand with confidence, and with success. The photos on the right are from a recent project involving the transfer of two (2) container gantry cranes from Port Rashid to Jebel Ali Port. ISS acted as consultants, supervising the shifting of the cranes onto barges, overseeing the ballasting and deballasting of the barges, carrying out stability calculations, as well as strength calculations of the cranes securing stays. Finally, ISS carried out tug and towage approvals. 21 A4 Lanscape Brochure V2.indd 4 12/08/2010 13:32
Project cargo inspections One of the most substantial projects of the past ten years has been the Dubai Metro. With almost twelve million passengers having travelled on the Dubai Metro in the first six months of its operation, the world s largest driverless rail network is performing on target. Inchcape Shipping Services have played a leading role in getting the project on the right track having been actively involved in the inspection of each and every car and engine that arrived in Dubai to be part of the Metro services. Our surveyors inspected the stock as it was unloaded from the overseas vessels, with subsequent surveys of all cars and engines when they were positioned in the open zones of Jebel Ali Port, for detailed assessment of their structural condition. Excellent surveying capabilities, coupled with very competitive charge rates made Inchcape Shipping Services the surveyors of choice. 2 A4 Lanscape Brochure V2.indd 5 12/08/2010 13:32
Pleasure craft & superyachts The surveyors of Inchcape Shipping Services apply strict rules and procedures to each inspection they handle. Our surveyors make themselves thoroughly familiar with the scope of work of each particular assignment, well before they start their attendance. Once inspections have commenced our clients are kept fully informed on the work progress. On completion of attendance our surveyors issue a comprehensive and concise formal report, providing a complete and detailed record of all the appropriate findings and recommendations. Our expertise in matters concerning machinery, hull and other mechanical and electrical components associated with present day superyachts, ensures that successful final results are achieved in respect of every case that we attend. 3 A4 Lanscape Brochure V2.indd 6 12/08/2010 13:32
Cargo - Hull - Machinery Some casualties can be of such complicated nature that they may call for the engagement of surveyors who are well versed in the inspection of Cargo, Hull and Machinery. It is important for an attending surveyor to be able to establish the nature, cause and extent of damage and on the basis of his findings to make recommendations with regard to all the necessary repairs. However, there is another important contribution a good surveyor can make towards a casualty, and that is with regard to putting forward recommendations to help prevent the damage inspected from ever happening again. Shipowners invest substantial amounts of money in new buildings and therefore once a ship is commissioned she should stay operational for as long as possible, without interruptions caused by accidents. Similarly, cargo shippers, receivers and underwriters stand to be faced with financial losses when cargoes suffer damage. At Inchcape Shipping Services we employ surveyors who possess multifaceted capabilities that can bring even the most complicated inspections to a satisfactory end for our clients. 4 A4 Lanscape Brochure V2.indd 7 12/08/2010 13:33
Ship surveys When we receive a request from shipowners, P&I Clubs or H&M Underwriters to attend to the inspection of a ship we need to concentrate on the pillars that support maritime safety. These pillars are: Technical knowledge Practical experience This is where Inchcape Shipping Services set the standards for service. We do this without any compromises and we always make sure that we appoint the right person for the matter at hand. This way we ensure that the attending surveyor will produce the most satisfactory solution and that he will bring the case to a successful end. It is always the main endeavour of Inchcape Shipping Services to take responsible actions so as to safeguard the environment, life and property. We always maintain two surveyors, who are trained and certificated by SDT SHERLOG, in readiness to undertake ultrasonic inspections of ships hatch covers, by using our own equipment which is regularly calibrated by its manufacturers. 5 A4 Lanscape Brochure V2.indd 8 12/08/2010 13:33
Tug & Barge Oil continues to be the main export of countries in the Arabian Gulf, from Iraq in the north to Oman in the south. As a direct consequence of the above there is continuous development of offshore and onshore facilities dedicated to the export of oil. The building and the commissioning of such facilities entails the use of specialized materials and equipment. Once fabrication of all the necessary engineering materials has been completed these need to be transported to the location where they are to be installed. When such locations are offshore the transport of choice is tug and barge. It is in cases such as these that Inchcape Shipping Services surveyors get involved and ensure that stowage, securing and lashing of the project cargoes [including heavy lifts] are carried out correctly. To complete their attendance our surveyors make assessment of the barge stability and inspect the tug and tow in order to issue towage approval certificates. 6 A4 Lanscape Brochure V2.indd 9 12/08/2010 13:34
Cargoes in reefer containers It is often thought that cargo in reefer containers does not get damaged. This is far from true. Let s look at some of the factors influencing the condition of fruits, vegetables and other produce that are carried under refrigerated conditions. Temperature: [Freezing, Chill injury] Relative Humidity: [Storage temperature] Controlled Atmosphere: [Physical deterioration] Physiological Deterioration Chemical Deterioration Pathological Deterioration Pre-Harvest Factors Post-Harvest handling techniques Packaging methods: [Preshipment systems] Stowage in Containers: [Carriage conditions] Stowage and air flow: [Fresh-air venting] Breakdowns or delays. When any one of the above factors goes wrong it may, as a direct consequence, cause serious damage to the cargo in a reefer container. The inevitable consequence will be substantial insurance claims. It s nice to know that Inchcape Shipping Services have the knowledge and the expertise to protect their clients interests under all possible scenarios. 7 A4 Lanscape Brochure V2.indd 10 12/08/2010 13:34
Cargo Insurers and P&I Clubs Inchcape Shipping Services employ claims executives whose main target is to review a claim file and make recommendations to our clients on how they and their service providers can finalise a claim case in the shortest possible time and under the most favourable terms. We provide, among others, claims services for: Particular average, General average, Unrepaired damage, Liability claims under P&I cover and marine insurance policies. Our claims executives offer a non-confrontational service. They are well experienced to appoint an appropriate surveyor or to put together a team of surveyors, who are both efficient and cost effective to deal with any assignment (be it a major casualty or a minor event). Our claims executives can identify the best service provider on a case by case basis and in this manner of operating we can offer an unmatched response to any type of claim, irrespective of whether it concerns Cargo Insurers, or P&I Clubs. 8 A4 Lanscape Brochure V2.indd 11 12/08/2010 13:34
