ECOGLO PTE LTD Designers Handbook for Ecoglo Flat Nosing To meet the design and construction requirements of Singapore BCA Code on Accessibility in The Built Environment 2013 VISIBLY BETTER This handbook provides guidance for designing systems using Ecoglo Non Slip Flat Nosing to meet the design and construction requirements of Singapore BCA Code on Accessibility in The Built Environment 2013
Introduction This document is aimed at those wishing to design steps profile to meet the design and construction requirements of Singapore BCA Code on Accessibility in the Built Environment 2013. This document explains: Where Ecoglo Flat Nosing are appropriate to use; Which Ecoglo Flat Nosing are avail- able; What ongoing inspections should be carried out. For more detail explaining how Ecoglo Flat Nosing meet building code requirements email your query to:- info@ecoglo.sg About Ecoglo Ecoglo produces high performance, high durability photoluminescent products for step edges, handrails, paths, doors, and hazard marking. Ecoglo s products can be used for these purposes: everyday reduction of slips and falls through the provision of step edge contrast; better step edge contrast in all situations whether light, dark or dimly lit; improve orientation & wayfinding for the visually impaired; increase safety & security preparedness with failsafe emergency lighting. Technical Requirements High Durability Product used in stairway must have high durability due to the demands of high foot traffic. To provide the necessary durability the Ecoglo manufacturing process involves heat curing to integrally bond the active ingredients into an aluminium substrate. The products have passed tests by accredited agencies for durability, UV resistance, weather resistance, stain resistance, abrasion resistance, ease of cleaning, flammability, toxicity and radioactivity. High Performance Photoluminescence Ecoglo product contain photoluminescent pigment phosphors that absorb light energy and re-emit this as a bright glow. Following testing of over 100 pigments on the market, a custom pigment was designed to achieve the greatest luminosity possible. Ecoglo products are tested in accordance with UL1994 by an independent laboratory to prove their high visibility. Ecoglo products are activated by either natural or artificial light and will glow for many hours following activation. The duration of visibility indoors will depend upon the charging source and the length of time exposed to this light source. Outdoors, the natural light will fully charge Ecoglo photoluminescent material, even on the most overcast day. When fully charged outdoors, Ecoglo products have luminance that will last all through the night. High Performance Slip Resistance Ecoglo anti-slip components are produced using hard wearing silicon carbide and the same heat curing process as the photoluminescent components. They can be used indoors or outdoors as they are UV and weather resistant. They have passed UL410 Standard for Slip Resistance for Floor Surface Material and have high performance classifications as shown below. Step Edge Contrast Ecoglo Flat Nosing can be used to provide step edge contrast to: prevent slips and falls Improve accessibility for people with impaired vision aid in wayfinding in low light or dark environments Steps should allow for fast, orderly and safe movement of people in both emergency and non emergency situations. Poor visibility is a leading cause of slips and falls on steps. The cost to facilities in claims for slips and falls can be an excessive avoidable expense. Glare in the environment, visual reflectance and specular properties of a stair tread can contribute to daytime visibility difficulties. Ecoglo Flat Nosing can provide step edge contrast that overcomes these issue and ensures good contrast in light, dark and dim conditions. Step edge contrast is important for all people but particularly important for those with impaired vision. Steps and Stairways 3
Functional Requirements In order to prevent slips and falls the step edge strips are slip resistant, provide visual contrast to define the edge and are highly durable to ensure that they are not worn out by high foot traffic, rendering them reflective. Contrast meets appropriate Light Reflective Value (LRV) difference or Luminance Contrast Value for the par- ticular jurisdiction. When the products are being used to meet accessibility codes the width of the strip will be determined by the code requirement in the particular jurisdiction. Slip resistance meets the appropriate slip resistance test for the region. Design Philosophy The philosophy of the design is to make step edges visible using Ecoglo s high durability Flat Nosing with photoluminescent markers. Ecoglo photoluminescent markings have two components, a photoluminescent strip and an anti-slip strip. These two components create internal visual contrast thus ensuring the step edge contrast is independent of the tread surface (Figure 2.1). This internal contrast also ensures that visibility is good even under conditions of glare and visual reflectance. Step edge contrast should be on the tread of a stair, not the riser, because when either ascending or descending stairs the tread provides the visual information required to negotiate stairs safely. (Figure 2.2) Ecoglo photoluminescent products are aluminium based and are manufactured using a patented heat curing process to ensure high durability to cope with the demands of high foot traffic. Figure 2.1 Figure 2.2 5
System Design The horizontal leading edge of all steps should be marked including the landing step at the top of any flight of steps (Figure 2.3) and all changes in level. Figure 2.3 6
Where should Ecoglo Flat Nosing be installed? The following information specifies the recommended Ecoglo product in each situation which may require non-slip nosing. All steps at the stair and all changes in level should be fitted with Ecoglo Flat nosing. To ensure that the Ecoglo markings will remain in place once installed, installers must follow the current installation instructions for each product. Steps and Stairways Ecoglo F12 Flat nosings, with E3 PL & Non Slip Strip along the horizontal leading edge of all steps including the landing step at the top of any flight of stairs. The nosings should normally be set back from the sides of the stairway by 5~100mm at each side. Ecoglo stocks up to 3000mm to suit all step widths. For step widths greater than 3000mm, multiple nosings should be installed with a 5mm drainage/thermal expansion gap on the wall nosings. F12-171 Steps and Stairways 7
What ongoing inspection should be carried out? Annual Inspection (to be carried out by the Owner or their appointed agent) Action All products are still configured as at installation and there is no material damage to any of these products. Complete All products are clean from general dust build up and any other specific obscuring deposits. All products are clearly visible and have not been covered up by carpet or other materials. All steps at the stair and all changes in level are marked and there has been no change to the configuration of the building. 8

Some years ago Sir Richard Hadlee decided to shorten his run up - Different, innovative, controversial, but a new approach. Fans and pundits debated it, but Sir Richard knew he was right. He had done his homework and his research told him he could bowl just as fast with even greater control. And it meant a longer playing career. SIR RICHARD HADLEE The records fell and the rest is history. Just like Sir Richard, Ecoglo has done the research and knows the numbers. Using the same professional approach Ecoglo is now bringing innovation to emergency lighting.
