What is activated carbon?

What is activated carbon? Activated carbon is charcoal activated by steam to create many pores to adsorb particles Can be made from many type of raw materials with high carbon content such as coconut shell, palm shell, wood or coal

What is activated carbon? After activation, each type of raw material provide different pore structures resulted in different characteristics Coconut shell is the hardest raw material, after activation, it will provide biggest number of micro pores(smallest pore size) which is good for small particle adsorption such as odor or chlorine in water

What is activated carbon? On the other hand, wood is good for color removal due to the softness of wood. After activation, wood will provide large amount of Meso pore(medium pore size) and Macro pore(large pore size)

Process of producing activated carbon

How activated carbon is produced? Raw material such as Coconut shell, palm shell or wood are carbonized without oxygen and turn into charcoal Our coconut shell come from many suppliers resulted in inconsistent quality of raw material go to our process. However, CGC has a special process called pre-treatment, to adjust quality of raw material and produce consistent activated carbon.

How activated carbon is produced? Charcoal will be stimulated by using steam at 900-1200 C in the furnace. By controlling oxygen, charcoal will turn into activated carbon then grinding to many sizes according to customer needs.

Activated carbon quality control system We have controlling system in every steps of our production from charcoal inlet, after activation, after crushing, sizing and after packing to guarantee that our customers will get the product they needs with consistent quality.

Quality guarantee-retained sample We have inter laboratory comparison with in Thailand and abroad every 3 months so our COA is recognized all over the world Activated carbon is kept as retained sample at least 2 years after delivering to customer

Grinding, crushing and sizing More than 10 crushing and grinding machines are used to produce activated carbon to serve customer needs such as 18x40, 60x120, 80x325 mesh Our capacity to produce powder activated carbon used in municipal water is up to 10 MT per day at 45 micron pass 90% by using Ball Mill

Acid washing-drying-reducing iron content We also have facility to wash activated carbon in order to reduce dust, adjust ph and reduce heavy metal content such as Arsenic and Silica Process to reduce Iron content in activated carbon is also important for drinking water customer.

Type of activated carbon

Type of activated carbon 1. Powder activated carbon, PAC size : <0.18 mm or < 80 mesh Usage : Common use in municipal water or tap water. Also used for flu gas treatment in incinerator. Normally, PAC will be used in continuous process. After activated carbon is fully adsorbed, will be separated by filtration or coagulant process

Type of activated carbon 2. Granular activated carbon, GAC size : 0.2-5 mm or > 80 mesh (Ex. 4x8 8x30 and 12x40) Usage : Gas or liquid treatment. Activated carbon is filled in vessel, close system. Gas or liquid stream will flow into the vessel so activated carbon can adsorb particles.

Type of activated carbon 3. Extruded activated carbon size : cylindrical shape with diameter 0.8-5 mm Usage : Normally used in gas treatment Due to its identical shape, pressure drop will be lower and easier for air to flow than granular one.

How the activated carbon work? non-polar molecule dissolved in water will be adsorbed in surface area of activated carbon by Van der Waals force as per attached picture. Normally, activated carbon can adsorb non-polar molecule while polar molecule are still in the water. Most of pesticides are non-polar molecule which can be adsorb by using activated carbon used in home water filter
