SECTION 07322 CONCRETE TILE ROOFING PART 1 GENERAL 1.01 SUMMARY A. Section Includes: Concrete tile roofing as shown on Drawings and as specified. 1.02 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION A. Performance: Meet the following requirements: 1. Strength: 1994 UBC Standard 15-5. 2. Water Absorption: 1994 UBC Standard 15-5. 1.03 SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: Submit manufacturer's specifications, configurations, installation instructions and current ICBO Report. B. Shop Drawings: Submit shop drawings showing details on hip, ridge, valley and gable configurations, methods of fastening and attachment, and collaborated details with related work. Include a calculation of the total weight of materials to be installed as a roofing system. C. Samples: Submit samples showing color, surface finish and texture, and configuration. 1.04 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Qualifications: Work shall be performed by applicator approved by the manufacturer. B. Perform work in conformance with the latest edition of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), Steep Roofing Manual. C. Regulatory Requirements: 1. ICBO Research Report No. 2093 - Extruded Concrete Interlocking Roof Tile - Monier Villa, Roma, Classic "100," Mission "S," Homestead, Flat Shake or Slate Concrete Tiles. 1.05 DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE A. Packing and Shipping: Deliver materials to site in manufacturer's original unopened packaging with labels intact. B. Handling: 1. Comply with manufacturer's instructions. 2. To avoid the occurrence of color patterning on the roof, tiles shall be loaded to ensure that shades are either segregated or blended uniformly over the entire roof elevation. C. Storage: 1. Adequately protect against damage while stored at the site and protect from mud, dust, dirt or other materials likely to stain or render tile unsatisfactory for installation. 2. Do not stack loaded pallets on top of one another. 3. Do not stack tiles on roof in a manner which would endanger structure. 4. 1.06 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Do not install underlayment on wet or frozen sheathing. B. Do not begin installation until related work in areas to receive tiles is complete. 1.07 WARRANTY A. Provide ten year warranty for materials and workmanship. Cover damage to building resulting from failure to resist penetration of water. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 MANUFACTURERS A. Monier Roof Tile, Phoenix, AZ 2.02 TILE MATERIALS A. Concrete Tile: 1. Profile: [Slate 2. Nominal Size: 16-1/2 inch x 13 inch (419 mm x 330 mm). 3. Color finish: Through color Monier 2000 Mahogany 3949.. 4. Design: a. Interlocking, with anchor lugs located on the underside. b. Interlocking ridges shall be provided on the longitudinal edges to restrict lateral movement and provide waterstop. c. Transverse bars on underside to serve as weather checks. d. One or two nail holes depending on profile. 5. Composition: Extruded cured concrete composed of Portland Cement and selected sand aggregate being colored by integral color addition or surface coating of specially formulated Portland Cement based products and coloring agents. 4. Accessory Tiles: Furnish special shapes to suit valley, hip, ridge, rake, eave, and other conditions. 2.03 SHEET MATERIALS A. Underlayment: ASTM D226, No. 30 un-perforated asphalt saturated felts. 2.04 ACCESSORIES A. Fasteners: 1. Tile: a. Nails: Corrosion resistant box nails, minimum No. 11 gauge of sufficient length to penetrate 3/4 inch (19mm) into battens, or sheathing or through the thickness of the sheathing, whichever is less and meeting the requirements of UBC Standard 25-17. b. Severe wind uplift conditions: Monier TM purpose made nose clips for securing the nose end of tile. 2. Underlayment: a. 3/4 inch (19mm) corrosion resistant roofer nails. b. In high wind areas where wind can be expected during underlayment installation: Provide tin tabs or caps, minimum 32 gauge zinc coated sheet metal not less than 1-5/8 inch (41mm) nor more than 2 inch (50mm) diameter. 98055A 07322-2 Rev. 1 December 11, 1998

B. Plastic Cement: ASTM D4586; Type 2, asphalt type with mineral fiber components, free of toxic solvents, capable of setting within 24 hours at temperatures of 75 degrees F. (24 degrees C.) and 50 percent RH. C. Lap Cement: Fibrated cutback asphalt type, recommended for use in application of underlayment, free of asbestos and toxic solvents. D. Deck Tape: 2 inch (50mm) wide aluminum coated cloth duct tape with adhesive backing. E. Wood Battens: Nominal 1 inch to 2 inch (25mm to 50mm) softwood lumber boards, as approved by local authorities. as specified in Section 06100. 2.05 FLASHING MATERIALS A. Sheet Flashings: As specified in this Section. B. Bituminous Paint: Acid and alkali resistant type; black color. C. Flashing Nails: Standard round wire roofing type, hot dipped zinc coated steel; of sufficient length to penetrate through roof sheathing. 2.06 FLASHING FABRICATION A. Form flashings to profiles indicated on Drawings, and to protect materials from physical damage and shed water. B. Form sections square and accurate to profile, in maximum possible lengths, free from distortion or defects detrimental to appearance or performance. C. Hem exposed edges of flashings minimum 1/4 inch (6.5mm) on underside. D. Apply bituminous paint on concealed surfaces of flashings. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 EXAMINATION A. Examine areas to receive tile to verify : 1. Surfaces are uniform, smooth, sound, clean and free of irregularities. 2. Related work penetrating the plane of the roof is completed. a. Roof openings are correctly framed. b. Roof penetrations are in place and flashed to deck surface. 3. Verify that deck is of sufficient thickness to accept fasteners B. Do not commence tile installation until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected. 3.02 PREPARATION A. Seal roof deck joints wider than 1/16 inch (1.5mm) with deck tape. B. Fill knot holes and surface cracks with latex filler at areas of bonded eave protection. C. Broom clean deck surfaces. 98055A 07322-3 Rev. 1 December 11, 1998

3.03 INSTALLATION - EAVE PROTECTION A. Place eave edge and rake edge metal flashings tight with fascia boards. Weather lap joints 2 inches (50mm) and seal with plastic cement. Secure flange with nails spaced 8 inches (200mm) o.c. B. Apply 4 inch (100 mm) wide band of plastic cement over deck flange of eave edge flashings, and embed an 18 inch (460mm) wide strip of underlayment. Place underlayment starter strip with eave edge flush with face of flashings. Secure in place. Lap ends minimum 6 inches (150mm). C. Apply lap cement at rate of approximately 1-1/4 gal/100 sq. ft. over underlayment starter strip. D. Starting from lower edge of starter strip, lay additional 36 inch (915mm) wide strips of underlayment in lap cement, to produce a two ply membrane. Weather lap plies minimum 19 inches (480mm) and nail in place. Lap ends minimum 6 inches (150mm). Stagger end joints of each consecutive ply. E. Extend eave protection membrane minimum 2'-0" (600mm) up slope beyond interior face of exterior wall. 3.04 INSTALLATION - UNDERLAYMENT A. Underlayment: 1. Install anti-ponding board to tile manufacturer's standard detail. Board shall be 28 gauge galvanized steel strip, rigid underlay, tempered board or locally accepted anti-ponding system. 2. Install underlayment commencing at eave and overlapping fascia board 1 inch (25mm) laid parallel to eave. a. Install 2 layers of Type 30 felt applied shingle fashion and solidly mopped together with approved cold applied asphaltic cement to extend from eave up roof to a point 24 inches (610mm) inside exterior wall line of building. Lap 6 inches (150mm) head and side. Alternately install one layer Type 40 or heavier asphalt coated base sheet extending from eave to a point 24 inches (600mm) inside exterior wall line of building, joints to be lapped 6 inches (150 mm) and cemented continuously with approved cold applied asphaltic cement. 3. Complete installation of field underlayment, 2 layers of Type 30, shingle fashion maintaining 2 inch (50mm) head and 6 inch (150mm) side laps. Secure underlayment with 3/4 inch (19mm) roofing nails at 12 (300mm) on center at laps and 24 (600mm) on center down the longitudinal center line of each ply. 4. Interlace piles at valley sections crossing for full coverage. 5. The underlayment membrane shall weatherproof the roof deck. It shall be a weatherproof barrier capable of shedding any moisture to which may be exposed, allowing it to escape at the eave. 3.05 INSTALLATION - METAL FLASHING A. Install flashings in accordance with NRCA requirements and manufacturer's instructions. B. Valley Flashing: 1. Closed Valley Flashing: a. Extend minimum 11 inches (28mm) each way from centerline with splash diverter rib minimum one inch (25mm) high formed as part of the flashing. b. End laps 6 inches (150mm) minimum. c. Turn longitudinal edges in not less than 30 degrees and minimum 1/2 (13mm) in height to prevent water overflowing. 98055A 07322-4 Rev. 1 December 11, 1998

2. Fix valley flashing in place by nailing adjacent to flashing and cleating nail over turned up edge of flashing. 3. Do not flatten turn-up on flashing. 4. Do not nail through flash. C. Provide flashings around pipes, vents, flues, chimneys of lead fixed in accordance with manufacturers recommendations. D. Install and dress to profile of tile the counter flashings at wall abutments, parapet copings and chimney projections. E. Provide and install flexible metal soakers at intersection of ridge and hip and/or gable apex. Turn up edges of soakers to detail. F. Weather lap joints minimum 2 inches (50mm) and seal weather tight with plastic cement. G. Secure in place with nails at 8 inches (200mm) o.c. Conceal fastenings. H. Flash and seal work projecting through or mounted on roofing with plastic cement, weather tight. 3.06 TILE INSTALLATION A. Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and NRCA Steep Roofing Manual. B. Layout: Snap chalk lines parallel to eave line. Set out as shown in applicable manufacturer Installation Guide detailing roof layout and coursing. C. Battens: 1. Fix battens to conform to chalk lines securing to deck at not more than 24 inches (600mm) on center using 8 penny corrosion resistant nails. 2. Size and configuration shall suit tile system. 3. Battens shall be installed in such a manner as to provide drainage past or beneath them at a maximum of 4'-0" (1220mm) intervals by using packers beneath battens or providing 1/2 inch (13mm) spaces between battens at 4'-0" (1220mm) intervals. The 1/2 inch (13mm) spaces between battens shall be staggered and shall not be in a straight line. 4. Do not cut battens in place on the deck as this is likely to damage the membrane. D. Tile Installation - General: 1. Lay up field tile in straight bond with side lap of successive courses aligned. 2. Align each tile so that horizontal lines are parallel to eave line and vertical lines are at right angles and batten lugs are firmly engaged on sheathing or battens. Remove foreign matter from interlocking ribs to ensure correct fit and interlock. Cracked or broken tile shall not be installed nor allowed to remain on the roof. 3. Align each tile so as to allow at least 1/16 inch (1.5mm) between tiles while ensuring the tiles do interlock completely. Do not abut tiles tightly. 4. Coordinate installation of roof mounted components or work projecting through roof with weather tight placement of counter flashings. 5. Cut tiles at roof penetrations, to match angle of hips, valleys and elsewhere as required in a manner not to damage or weaken tiles. Discard cracked, broken, chipped or otherwise damaged tile. 6. Where pieces of cut tiles, especially in hip and valley areas, are too small to nail, they should be secured with an approved adhesive substance and/or wired. 7. Project tile 1-1/2 inches (38mm) beyond face of fascia boards. 8. Place tile square with building lines and parallel with roof slope. Place filler and closure pieces as required. 9. Installed head lap 3 inches (75 mm) minimum. 10. Approximate installed weight: 900 lbs. (408 kg.). 98055A 07322-5 Rev. 1 December 11, 1998

E. Nailing Tile: 1. Nailing schedule: a. Nail perimeters to include three tile courses and not less than 36 inches (915mm) from either side of hips or ridge and edges of eaves and gable rakes. b. Pitch 3 inches (75mm) in 12 inches (300mm) to 5 inches (130mm) in 12 inches (300mm) field tile nailing not required. c. Nail every tile in every other row for pitches between 5 inches (130mm) in 12 inches (300mm) and less than 12 inches (300mm) in 12 inches (300mm). d. Nail every tile for pitches exceeding 12 inches (300mm) in 12 inches (300mm). e. Rake tiles shall be nailed with two nails. f. The noses of ridge, hip and rake tiles shall be set in a bead of approved roofers mastic. 2. Nails shall be driven snug to tile surfaces. F. Hips and Ridges: 1. Lay hip and ridge tile snug to abutting shoulder. Nail to supporting member using one corrosion resistant nail of sufficient length to penetrate 3/4 inches (75mm) into supporting member. 2. Nose ends to be set in a bead of roofers mastic which also covers the nail head. 3. Weatherproof the junction between field tile and hip and/or ridge with an approved dry ridge/hip system or a bed of mortar or other approved bedding material. G. Rakes: Install rake tile to overlap field tile and barge board fitting over barrel of tile. Secure with two corrosion resistant nails of sufficient length to penetrate 3/4 inches (75mm) into supporting member. H. Painting: Paint flashings, roof projections associated with roof with Tile Manufacturer's color coordinated paint to match tiles in accordance with Section 09900 workmanship requirements. 3.07 CLEANING A. During the course of the Work and on completion, remove and dispose of excess materials, equipment and debris away from premises. Leave Work in clean condition in accordance with Section 01500. 3.08 PROTECTION A. Construction Traffic: Protect materials and take precautions to prevent other trades from damaging roof during and after construction. Repair torn or punctured materials before roofing over. Use runways over materials in place. B. Waterstopping: At the end of each day's work, the work performed during that day shall be sealed at the edges and well covered to prevent moisture from entering under the material. Contractor shall take necessary precautions during installation to insure that moisture from inclement weather shall be prevented from entering the building where interior finishes are in place and/or building is occupied.
