Alucobond Today. For Many More Tomorrows. Environmental Guide

The environment is everyone s responsibility Over the last several years, the building industry has moved toward a more environmentally friendly approach to design. By using methods that incorporate sustainable materials and processes, we can reduce our impact on the environment. In fact, a growing number of U.S. cities are requiring architects to utilize environmentally friendly methodologies in new construction. This demand for more environmentally sustainable products makes Alucobond and Alucobond Plus material the choice of architects who want to make a positive impact on the environment as well as earn LEED certification points.

Responsible Environmental Practices Paint process Our facility is among the top national performers in terms of emissions control and has been chosen as a benchmark in setting more stringent EPA standards. The painting process used in producing Alucobond and Alucobond Plus is called coil coating. During this process, 99.9% of all fugitive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are captured. Excess paint is recovered and used to cover the non-visible side of Alucobond, so no excess paint is burned as waste. All solvents used to clean the machinery are collected and used again. Waste Minimization All excess polyethylene core material is recycled back into the manufacturing process and all scrap aluminum is sent back to aluminum processing plants for recycling. In addition, Alcan Composites saves landfill space by donating like materials to a variety of charitable organizations and school systems across the country. Recoverability Alucobond is fully recoverable. The polyethylene in its core is one of the most energy-efficient materials to recycle and can be reheated and reused indefinitely. The aluminum that comprises its skins is also one of the most recycled resources in the world. In fact, the aluminum used to manufacture Alucobond already contains, on average, nearly 85% recycled material an attribute that can help earn points towards LEED certification.

the standard for tomorrow The LEED Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark in the design, construction and operation of high-performance, environmentally sustainable buildings. The program is sponsored by the USGBC and promotes a whole-building approach by recognizing performance in areas of human and environmental health. The LEED Certification System issues points within various categories of building design and construction. Depending on the number of points the entire building receives, it can qualify for LEED certification as follows: Certification LeveL Points Necessary Certified 26-32 Silver 33-38 Gold 39-51 Platinum 52 or more As a proud member of the USGBC, Alcan Composites USA participates in the development and refinement of the rating system, along with discussing the sustainability of our own products. Alucobond and Alucobond Plus can help contribute up to two points within the LEED Certification System. Leadership

materials and resources (MR) making our Points Alucobond and Alucobond Plus may help contribute up to two points within the Materials and Resources section. MR Credit 4.1 awards one point if the sum of the post-consumer recycled content, plus one-half of the post-industrial content, constitutes at least 10% of the total value of the materials in the project. The percentage by weight of recycled aluminum content for 4mm Alucobond is 26%, 20% for 6mm, and 18% for 4mm Alucobond Plus. MR Credit 4.2 awards an additional point if the total value is at least 20%. Alucobond s versatility allows architects to design more innovative building features, which may also help to contribute LEED points within the Innovation in Design category. in Energy and Environmental Design

Alcan Composites prides itself on being a steward of the environment and strives to minimize the effect that we may have on our surroundings. We ve put in place a series of initiatives and procedures that demonstrate our commitment to preserving our communities, employees and environment for generations to come. Alcan Composites USA (ACUS) has a Storm Water Best Management Practices Plan and a Groundwater Protection Plan that require monitoring of storm run-off and regular site inspections as well as review of the management plans. ACUS has a Spill Prevention Contingency and Control Plan as well as an Emergency Response Plan to protect the environment and personnel in case of emergency incidents. ACUS participates in the Alcan Green House Gas (GHG) Target program to reduce GHG emissions company wide with an emphasis on energy usage reduction. ACUS has a Resource Management Program which tracks raw materials, scrap, waste products, energy usage and water usage. ACUS is inspected by the required governmental agencies but is also audited by third parties as part of the ISO 4001 and OHSA 18001 requirements. Additionally, Alcan Inc. conducts a periodic comprehensive EHS audit as well as internal EHS audits by site personnel. Recycling programs at ACUS include pallets (wood), aluminum, plastic, oils and solvents. ACUS employees also participate in the Relay for Life and recycle consumer aluminum products with proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity. Dedication to Environment, Health and Safety

Putting the Environment First The choices we make today have a major impact on the world of tomorrow. At Alcan, it s our foremost responsibility to do all we can to lessen our footprint on the environment. That s the cornerstone of our Environment, Health & Safety First policy.
