GCSE Design & Technology: Graphic Products (45502) Controlled Assessment Tasks and Guidance FOR SUBMISSION IN SUMMER 2015 AND SUMMER 2016

The Controlled Assessment tasks that were for submission in summer 2013 and summer 2014 have now been reviewed. The following tasks are to be used for submission in summer 2015 and summer 2016. Please note that in the majority of cases the tasks that were previously available have changed slightly. You should ensure that dependent upon which year you are intending upon submitting controlled assessment work that you select from the correct list of tasks.

GCSE Design and Technology: Graphic Products (4550) Controlled Assessment Tasks The following are the AQA set tasks for the GCSE Design and Technology: Graphic Products specification for submission in Summer 2015 and Summer 2016. One of these tasks should be chosen when doing the controlled assessment unit. In each case a context is provided. When travelling on long journeys it is important to keep young people entertained. Activity packs are an ideal solution, as they are compact, light and contain a variety of different activities. Design Task 1 Design and make an Activity Pack that will entertain and educate young people on a long journey. Present the pack suitably packaged and ready for sale. Board games are a popular past time with both children and adults and are often bought as presents. Design Task 2 An international Board Game manufacturer needs you to design and make a new prototype board game using the race and chase format. It is important that the contents are suitably contained and the game is presented ready for sale. Many books and greeting cards that contain movement are to be found in shops. Design Task 3 Design and make EITHER a book OR a series of at least four greeting cards containing kinetic spreads. The book should be approx. A5 size, either in landscape or portrait format. The greeting cards should be packaged and ready for sale with envelopes of an appropriate size.

Many model and hobby shops sell buildings that are flat packed ready for the purchaser to construct. Design Task 4 Using appropriate graphical materials design and make a true to scale kit for a building that will be sold flat packed ready for sale. Promotion is important for a new product or an event. Design Task 5 A group of students in your school have formed a band and want a complete set of publicity material for their future events. The set must include a CD Case which has a minimum of four folding panels containing any number of CD s and relevant information. The panels can fold in any direction and could hold a combination of CDs. The promotional material should also contain an item which incorporates a smart or modern material. Promotional material such as T shirts or similar items should be suitably packaged. Designers have a responsibility to design products that reflect a cultural influence. Design Task 6 A large cultural organisation requires a stationery pack to be sold in its shops around the world. As a result the pack should not display any text. The initial pack will have the theme of either the Aztecs or of the Orient. It will need to contain letter paper, envelopes and note lets and will be housed in a suitably decorated white / grey card box, presented ready for sale.

Major sporting events often have commemorative items produced. In order for these events to be successful different types of promotional material is marketed before and during the events. Design Task 7 Design and make the packaging and promotional material for a commemorative product for a major sporting event of your choice. Shops and fast food outlets often refresh their image with a new corporate identity. Design Task 8 A well-established local hot fast food delivery service requires a new menu, a suitable flat packed card dispenser to hold these menus and a box to hold the hot food. The hot food box needs to have some form of smart indication of the temperature of the food. Design and make the required products. Confectionary items are sold by the wholesaler in a package called an outer. Often this outer doubles as a point of purchase display. Design Task 9 A luxury chocolate manufacturer feels the need to break into the low cost counter confectionary line. It plans to market a confectionary item to be named by you. It will cost less than 1 and will be a solid geometric shape and will be marketed directly on the shop counter from a point of purchase box. Design and make the wrapper and the point of purchase box. You will be required to model the product in a suitable material to fit the wrapper. All the items need to be full size.

Many packaging and display items created today do not depend on adhesives to hold them together. Design Task 10 Design and make a playhouse for a pet hamster in a non-toxic suitable card/board that can be assembled using no glue. The playhouse suitably decorated will be sold flat packed in a clear bag with a card header that uses a euro slot ready for display. Environmental Issues are becoming more and more important in our throw away society. Companies are taxed on the waste that they produce that is not recycled. Design Task 11 RECYCLAPHONE a company who are environmentally aware and specialise in recycling and marketing mobile phones need to promote their products. Design, prototype and package a high quality modelled mobile phone. The phone must be packaged for its safety and security and be presented with promotional material ready for launch to the public. Cinema productions often cost millions of pounds to produce, therefore it is important that the marketing and advertising of these films is successful. Design Task 12 A world famous cartoon film producer plans to release a new feature length film based on a fairy tale of your choice. The film company will require prototype advertising material in the form of flyers, press advertising, cinema tickets that use a smart or modern material to prevent fraud, and also a 1:5 scale suitable card or foam core board free standing display for the foyer of the cinema. To allow for flat pack delivery the display should be as glue free as possible. It is important that you do not use existing images of previously released cinema productions.
