This range of small scale Pilot Plants allows students to study the different types and applications used to treat wastewater and to produce potable water. Process industries use water for various reasons and therefore produce wastewater that is at varying levels of contamination. Most large scale process plants have their own wastewater treatment plant, so they can re-use and recirculate the water a number of times and conserve natural resources. The HFT Education pilot plants are designed to treat wastewater with different contamination levels. The plants are able to show the processes involved, so the results of varying the operational parameters can be investigated and analysed. This allows students to understand how to operate the plants at the maximum efficiency. Theoretical knowledge gained using the plants also allows for predicting the efficient design and operation of new treatment plants for specific applications. The HFT Education range can be used with other ranges e.g. Chemical Engineering or Process Control, to provide a fully dedicated small scale industrial laboratory that can provide a teaching and learning experience, to support studies for careers in many different industries and research opportunities. The key features and benefits of the HFT Education Food Processing Technology range are: Running of a pilot plant that simulates an industrial unit operation with a final product at the end of the process and observing and recording data from the actual process operation. Being able to focus on individual parts of the unit operation to analyse efficient use of power and raw materials. The use of industrial components, devices and instruments so students become familiar with their operation and characteristics. Control and monitoring of the pilot plants, either manually, using industrial instruments and devices or automatically via a PC and software, or a combination of both to ensure efficient operation. Varying the process operation parameters and observing and recording the effects with the ability to control the process to simulate situations experienced in industry, so troubleshooting and diagnosis can be performed to set the plant back into an efficient operating condition. Understanding the theory involved in the process being studied to evaluate the efficiency and predict the most efficient operation. Filtration WPN80 Automated Filtration Pilot Plant A Filter Press and Microfilter Plant for in-depth study of theory and operations of different types of filtration processes including dead-end filtration and tangential filtration. The unit includes a PID controller and control supervision software. NEW PRODUCT WPN85 Sand Column Filtration System Filtration / Modular Aerobic and Anaerobic A Sand Column Filtration System designed as a deep bed filter column to study water filtration through sand filters. Tests with this system can be scaled up to full size applications. The WPN85 consists of a stainless steel frame with a clear filter column that has test point sampling valves along its length. The granular filtration medium is supported in the column by a stainless steel gauze mesh. Modular Aerobic and Anaerobic WPN90 Water Purification Pilot Plant Base Unit The Water Purification Pilot Plant Base Unit provides the electrical and hydraulic services for the WPN90A Aerobic Purification System and the WPN90B Anaerobic Purification System. The unit includes two variable speed peristaltic pumps and a compressor with flowmeter for coupling to the purification systems. WPN90A Aerobic Water Purification System An aerobic water purification system for studying the theory and process of using activated sludge for waste water treatment. Modular Aerobic and Anaerobic WPN90B Anaerobic Water Purification System An anaerobic water purification system for studying the theory and processes for the anaerobic waste treatment of biomass, sewage and sludges. The unit includes an anaerobic digester and settler. Students use the system for study, simulation, sizing and optimisation of the process with variation of the hydraulic residence time, packing and recycle ratio. Anaerobic / Sewage WPN140 Manual Anaerobic Water Purification System An Anaerobic Water Purification Plant for in-depth study of theory and processes for the anaerobic waste treatment of biomass, sewage and sludges. The plant includes a reactor with built-in settler and floating head to act as a hydraulic guard. Anaerobic / Sewage Sludges are fed and recycled by two gear pumps. A compressor is used to stir the biomass by recycling air from the top to the bottom of the reactor. Biomass is heated by a heat exchanger included in the digester and connected to a diathermic-oil heating unit. WPN150 Automated Anaerobic Water Purification System An Anaerobic Water Purification Plant for in-depth study of theory and processes for the anaerobic waste treatment of biomass, sewage and sludges. The plant includes a reactor with built-in settler and floating head to act as a hydraulic guard, a PID controller and control and supervision software. PERMEABILITY and sedimentation WPN200 Permeability and Fluidisation Study Bench A Permeability and Fluidisation Study Bench that allows study and understanding of the flow of a liquid through a bed of solid particles, as well as filtration tests on real beds and waters. NEW PRODUCT The WPN200 uses a bed of granular medium e.g. sand or glass beads that are placed in a clear tube through which water can be made to flow in either a downward or upward direction. Water flow is provided from a constant head tank connected to the water network and the flow rate is measured by a variable area flowmeter. Pressure drops across the bed can be measured with by a water manometer or mercury manometer.
