MUNDUS ACP I & II In 2010, The University of the West Indies (UWI) joined the University of Porto s ERASMUS MUNDUS project as one of only two full partners in the Caribbean. In 2011, The UWI continued its partnership in the ERASMUS MUNDUS program as a full partner in MUNDUS ACP II. As a Partner Institution of the project, The UWI worked with other members of the consortium to ensure maximum quality of the project via a system of support. The UWI took an active role in: - Promotion of the project - Administration - Student support
MUNDUS ACP I & II Challenges Developing the institutional capacity necessary to actively manage a project of this scale (e.g. Allotment of resources, training of staff) Developing best practices to share accross the regional UWI system and effectively participate in international consortia Transfering knowledge/experience to other Caribbean institutions to help build capacity at the regional level

CARPIMS In 2011, The UWI was successful in its proposal for the first Intra-ACP Mobility Scheme call with its project titled the Caribbean-Pacific Island Mobility Scheme (CARPIMS). In its first year, the CARPIMS program has flourished and has greatly enhanced The UWI s management experience in the coordination of a large scale international mobility projects. The UWI is dedicated to the continued success and expansion of CARPIMS and it is passionate about the opportunities that it creates for advancing the Caribbean and Pacific regions.
CARPIMS Consortium The University of the West Indies (Coordinating Institution) University of the South Pacific National University of Samoa University of Papua New Guinea Universidade da Paz Timor Leste University of Guyana Universite D'Etat D'Haiti University of Belize University of Porto (Technical Partner) UNICA (Associate Partner)
CARPIMS An Overview The CARPIMS consortium focuses on capacity building and socioeconomic development within the consortium as a means of research and national development. Its primary objective is to establish a strong network of Caribbean- Pacific academic leaders, with emphasis on the development of a pool of engaged researchers and the retention of talented graduates, staff and researchers in partner HEIs. CARPIMS aims to promote and facilitate the sharing and adoption of best practices across the consortium in such areas as student and staff mobility, curriculum development, joint delivery of programmes, research collaborations, knowledge sharing (conferences, workshops, etc.), and other related activities.
CARPIMS Some Challenges... Lack of resources at some partner HEIs For instance, low capacity of internet access in the South Pacific, is a major challenge. The UWI has compensated for this by centralizing the majority of CARPIMS coordination activities and dedicating its own resources to assist Partners as much as possible to develop their own capacity. Template development is also a strong focus of the Management Secretariat. Lack of course offerings from consortium There was a glut of applicants applying to the only two HEIs which offer mobilities in a wide variety of fields UWI and USP. It is a primary objective of the CARPIMS Coordinators to ensure that next call for CARPIMS develops a wider array of courses across the different HEIs. * This will however be challenging as a result of the EACEA s decision to specialize thematic fields for future Intra-ACP calls. The scholarship application process should be reviewed and adjusted With an excess of 1,000 open applications which converted to 161 submitted, it is evident that the application form must be simplified.
