underfloor heating Heat source underfloor heating The choice of a heat source impacts on both the design of the underfloor heating and the installation procedure. Our initial estimate of the heat source load in kilowatts required to satisfy the underfloor heating is shown on the quotation. Manifold & pump modules Flow of warm water to the heating zones is controlled from plated brass Nu-Heat Optiflo manifolds. Depending on the control method required, the Optiflo is supplied with zone control valves, electronic time controls and wiring centres. The manifold is pre-assembled to reduce installation time. Warm water is fed to the manifold by a unique pump module, complete with circulator. Where warm water is to be supplied to the manifold at high temperature (e.g. in a gas boiler installation) the pump module will include a built-in temperature-control blending valve. Where the water temperature is controlled at the heat source, for example by a heat pump, the blending valve is unnecessary and will not have been quoted. According to the needs of the system, the pump modules may either be fitted directly to each manifold or installed remotely which allows greater flexibility in the positioning of manifolds. Fitting fewer pumps minimises electrical energy demand and reduces overall system cost. The location of manifolds is marked on a table in the quotation. Locations are recommended to keep the amount of heating tube required to a minimum and to assist installation; in both cases enabling a more competitive price to be achieved. Zoning For systems with a boiler as the heat source zoning provides separate temperature control in every main room. Control is through individual wall-mounted thermostats that activate a flow of warm water via zone valves on the Optiflo manifold. When the water supply is from a weather-compensated heat pump it is usual practice to use thermostats for most zones, to provide fine tuning for complete comfort. However certain zones are best left open-circuit (i.e. with no thermostat), for example hallways and bathrooms, plus an additional main living area which is used to locate the heat pump s own indoor temperature sensor. The specific details of zoning for the property including which rooms use thermostats or otherwise, are shown in the quotation. Component supply The components you receive will, as far as possible, contain every element of the system. The detailed list of materials is shown on the pricing page of the quotation. You only need to supply pipework to the Optiflo manifolds and minor electrical wiring sundries. If the system is joined to a radiator circuit or an existing heating system, an additional 2 port zone valve and timer may also be required. Nu-Heat supplies a complete package; when comparing quotes always ensure that you are comparing like with like, as the cost of sundry items and the time taken to source them can be significant. Tube Nu-Heat can select from a range of Fastflo floor heating tube diameters: 10mm, 14mm, 16mm or 18mm dependent on the specific requirements of the project. Fastflo is manufactured in PE-Xc, a material that has been installed in floor heating systems throughout Europe for the last three decades and, according to BSRIA, is the UK market leader. Fastflo flexible 5-layer PEX tube and is robust and flexible enough to be installed in both screed and timber floors. It conforms to DIN 4726 and is comprehensively guaranteed for 25 years. Fittings Controls A combination of either/or push-fit and compression-fit connections is supplied selected to provide a fit and forget solution that is virtually fail safe in operation. All fittings are easily accessible in operation. Nu-Heat does not supply standard off-the-shelf wiring centres as this often leads to poor heating control. As well as offering up to six thermostat options, we design and manufacture our own range of wiring control centres enabling perfect integration of all components supplied.

underfloor heating underfloor heating Supplementary heating Towel rails in bathrooms Domestic hot water Floor installation Insulation Floor coverings Installation support Warranty Design guarantees Even with current regulatory standards of insulation it may not be possible to achieve desired temperatures in some circumstances. Rooms with large areas of glazing, thermally resistive floor coverings or limited available floor space can fall into this category, especially as the underfloor heating is controlled to reach a maximum floor temperature of 29 C in living areas and 33 C in bathrooms and peripheral areas (as dictated by the European design standard). When this situation occurs, we will illustrate such shortfalls on the design specification so that they can normally be met with the use of additional heat sources or a change in floor construction or covering. Because bathrooms are required to be heated to high temperatures and usable floor space can be limited Nu-Heat will often specify that a towel radiator is installed to boost output, particularly where a bathroom or shower room is zoned with an adjacent room and where Part L of Building Regulations requires one to be installed. Towel radiators will be specified on the final design drawings where necessary. For more information or to purchase one of our high quality stainless steel towel rails, please visit www.nu-heat.co.uk/towelrails Whether the system you have requested is designed for a boiler, a heat pump or additional solar heating, Nu-Heat will supply the correct hot water cylinder to complement the system from our wide range: Nu-Heat s floor installation components have been specifically developed to enable our underfloor heating to be integrated into any floor structure. Different combinations of thermal diffuser, moulded insulation panel, plastic clip, and installation tools provide over 80 possible floor constructions. High levels of insulation are paramount. Although we do supply some specialised insulation products, those that are required as part of the building fabric are best sourced from builders merchants or insulation suppliers. Details of minimum insulation levels required by the underfloor heating design as dictated by Building Regulations are shown on the floor constructions page(s) of the quotation. The thermal resistance of floor coverings has a direct influence on performance. Whilst most floor coverings are suitable, materials such as felt underlays or timber boards in excess of 30mm thick should not be used. As a result of their low water temperature supply, systems powered by heat pumps are particularly affected, therefore Nu-Heat usually specifies extra tube at closer spacings. We only occasionally advise against certain floor coverings where the floor heating output may be compromised. Where coverings are unknown, the worst-case scenario is assumed. More information can be found on the Floor Coverings section of the Nu-Heat website at www.nu-heat.co.uk Every system comes with comprehensive technical literature, specifications and full technical support. Our installation guide time includes all mechanical underfloor heating components but excludes heat source, DHW cylinder, primary pipework, electrical installation and insulation. A separate installation schedule is attached to the quote. Nu-Heat supplies a comprehensive 25 year product replacement warranty in relation to the condition and durability of its Fastflo floor heating tube and Alupex pipe. Additionally, for the first 10 years from the date of installation, product liability insurance provides, in the unlikely event of failure, for Nu-Heat to bear all expenses incurred by laying bare the defective products, their removal, and the installation of replacement products as well as all subsequent costs necessary to restore the condition of the building in a professional manner. Damage to persons and property resulting from tube failure is also covered. Nu-Heat has invested heavily in developing calculation software that incorporates all design criteria and allows us to offer customers an insurance-backed Nu-Heat Design Guarantee of up to 5m. design innovation expertise service

heat pump heat pump Heat pump introduction All of the heat pumps supplied by Nu-Heat are of the highest quality with some of the best efficiency ratings available. They have undergone extensive and continuous development resulting in reliability and long life expectancy. Units are fitted with sophisticated control systems with built-in features to ensure maximum efficiency is achieved all year round. All heat pumps are designed to run with weather compensation, whereby the unit adjusts the flow temperature based on the outdoor temperature. This allows the heat pump to work at maximum efficiency whilst maintaining comfort levels by only producing water at exactly the correct temperature for the system requirements. Please note that the efficiency of the heat pump can be expressed in two ways. i) The CoP (co-efficient of performance) is what the heat pump produces under laboratory conditions, whereas ii) the seasonal CoP is the average performance over a year for a property with the estimated heat and hot water load of your project. Fittings & component Nu-Heat supplies all necessary plumbing fittings except for copper pipework. This ensures the installation runs smoothly with little requirement for the installer to source some of the more unusual fittings required for heat pump installations. Nu-Heat supplies these components at significantly less cost and inconvenience than if sourced separately from a merchant. The detailed list of materials is shown on the pricing page of the quotation. When comparing quotations please ensure that the same components are included in the price as very few companies offer a similarly comprehensive package. Ground loop tube & borehole probes Nu-Heat supplies medium-density polyethylene (PEM) pipe specified particularly for use as horizontal ground loop, the exact details of which depend on the heat pump being used. The quoted length of ground loop is calculated to ensure that adequate heat can be collected whilst getting the best efficiency from the heat pump, avoiding localized freezing. Note: Where boreholes are specified Nu-Heat will provide an assessment of the peak, and annual power demands for the system. From this the borehole contractor can calculate the parameters of the borehole array. However, until a full design has been completed these figures must be considered as guidance only, and are subject to change. Controls Nu-Heat s ground source heat pumps are supplied with controllers to manage the heating and hot water with hot water priority. Air source models have a controller that is fitted separately indoors. The heating control is weather compensating; adjusting the flow temperature to match the building s heat loss depending on the outdoor temperature. The control system has several key features to maximize efficiency and reliability. It is designed to constantly monitor and store information about the flow temperatures to the heating system, ensuring the heat pump only activates when it can run for a sufficient period of time this stops the system short-cycling and reduces the number of times the compressor needs to start, effectively increasing its life expectancy. The controller is set up by the commissioning engineer who programmes it using project-specific data from Nu-Heat s design software. Supplementary heating Heat pumps are generally designed to cope with 100% of the maximum design heating and load of the property, although in extremely cold conditions it may be necessary to supplement the heat pump. Some heat pumps have a built-in immersion heater that is adequate in most cases to cope with any shortfall. This is only used in extreme weather, and the modelling process undertaken by Nu-Heat ensures that this requirement is kept to a practical level. Nu-Heat generally recommends the fitting of a buffer tank to allow the heat pump to operate at its design flow rate and to prevent short cycling.

heat pump heat pump Radiators The heat pump can be used with radiators as well as underfloor heating, however, choosing the correct type of radiator is essential. The most suitable radiator is a high-output model designed to work with temperatures as low as 35 C. This should be compared to a conventional radiator that, even when oversized by 30%, still requires a flow temperature of 55 C or above, resulting in lower operating efficiency for the heat pump. If the system has been designed to work with radiators, Nu-Heat will assume a standard model oversized by 30% unless specific information is provided. Please contact your Nu-Heat Project Manager for advice on the most suitable model for the project. Towel rails in bathrooms Because bathrooms are required to be heated to higher temperatures than other main rooms a towel rail is usually fitted. This is a recommendation of Part L of the Building Regulations. Towel rails can be fitted into the heating circuit of most systems. Electric towel rails may also be used. For more information on Nu-Heat s range please visit www.nu-heat.co.uk/towelrails Domestic hot water Where the heat pump system is required to produce hot water, the size of the cylinder is calculated based on full occupancy of all bedrooms. Cylinder sizing is based on all baths holding 80 litres of water at 40 C and all showers running at 8 litres per minute for 10 minutes. If these assumptions do not match the actual requirements, please contact your Nu-Heat Project Manager for advice. Nu-Heat has a range of domestic hot water cylinders that are specifically designed to be used with heat pumps. Heat pumps will not work with cylinders designed for use with a conventional boiler. Heating system setup Cylinder options Installation Commissioning Whilst all heat pumps are controlled by weather compensation, it is usual practice to use thermostats for most zones, to provide fine tuning for complete comfort. However certain zones are best left open-circuit (i.e. with no thermostat), for example hallways and bathrooms, plus an additional main living area which is used to locate the heat pump s own indoor temperature sensor. Nu-heat has a range of domestic water cylinders which can be used with heat pumps. The cylinder is matched to the particular heat pump, but for each range a solar variant is available. As part of Nu-Heat s complete package, every system is supplied with comprehensive technical literature, specifications and full technical support to ensure straightforward installation even for installers new to heat pump technology. Please note that there are aspects of installing a heat pump that are notifiable to Building Control. A commissioning visit from a Nu-Heat engineer is normally included in the quote price, so you can be assured that the heat pump installation will be thoroughly checked, correctly set up, and then tested. Having the system commissioned by Nu-Heat or another MCS approved installer also makes it eligible for any agreed grant funding on applicable products. design innovation expertise service

solar solar Component supply The components you receive will, as far as possible, contain every element of the system. The detailed list of materials is shown on the pricing page of the quotation. You only need to supply pipework between the boiler or heat pump, plus the domestic water plumbing, and electrical wiring sundries. As an alternative to copper pipe and high-temperature fittings, Nu-Heat can supply twin stainless steel flexible pipe. This is the easiest way to connect the solar circuit, is supplied with specialist fittings and pipe supports, is capable of withstanding the high temperatures generated, is pre-insulated, and includes the panel sensor cable, saving time and making it a cost-effective option. Please note: there is an optional price for stainless steel flexible pipework. All the necessary plumbing fittings are supplied by Nu-Heat at significantly less cost than if sourced direct from a merchant. Having all of these parts on site will minimise time-consuming trips to buy fittings. Most importantly the components will be suitable for the high temperature solar application. Solar-thermal panels Nu-Heat uses flat plate collectors that utilize the latest collector technology including prismatic glass and titanium oxide absorber coating to maximize performance. The rear of the panel is a single polycarbonate structure with built-in fixing locations, making it extremely light and easy to place into position on the roof The number of panels is directly related to the size of cylinder and daily water usage, and is specified to give a satisfactory solar fraction (the annual percentage of hot water supplied by the solar collectors) without causing overheating. Pump station Controller Domestic hot water The pump station comprises a circulation pump, isolating valves, pressure, temperature, and flow gauges, de-aerator and pressure relief valve, all of which are pre-assembled and contained in an insulated case with mounting brackets. The industry-standard solar controller assesses the temperature of the panels and cylinder to determine when the pump should run. Nu-Heat incorporates best practice design in terms of safe and efficient control. The type and size of cylinder specified is determined by Nu-Heat s specially developed design program to match daily hot water requirements. The size of domestic hot water cylinder specified will have been chosen to optimize the operation of the solar system based on the daily hot water usage whilst taking into account the volume of hot water produced at times of the year when solar gain is low. Combined solar, heat pump Nu-Heat has many years experience in the integration of underfloor heating, heat pumps and solar hot & underfloor heating water systems, allowing us to ensure optimum system performance whilst maximizing energy efficiency. Energy savings calculations The Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) is used to ensure compliance with Part L of the Building Regulations. Nu-Heat uses this model to calculate the system performance figures stated in your quote. This is the standard practice as set down by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). Nu-Heat s specification process is based on the European solar design software, TSol. TSol has been developed and tested over many years and is an industry standard widely used to ensure performance. Installation All Nu-Heat products are designed for straightforward installation and every system comes with a comprehensive set of technical literature and design specifications. There are aspects to installing a solar thermal system that are notifiable to Building Control. design innovation expertise service
