Agile PLM on Oracle Ravello Cloud Service ORACLE WHITE PAPER AUGUST 2017

Oracle Ravello Cloud Service Oracle Ravello is an overlay cloud that enables enterprises to run their VMware and KVM applications, including complex Layer 2 networking, on a public cloud without making any modifications. With Ravello, enterprises do not need to modify their VMs or change networking. This empowers businesses to rapidly deploy existing data-center applications to the public cloud without any associated infrastructure costs, migration costs, and overhead for a variety of use-cases such as devtest, staging, UAT, etc. Agile Product Lifecycle Management on Oracle Ravello Agile PLM Overview Oracle s Agile Product Lifecycle Management solutions enable businesses to accelerate product innovation and maximize product profitability by managing the information, processes, and decisions about their products throughout the product lifecycle and across the global product network. With a broad suite of enterprise-class product lifecycle management (PLM) applications and time-to valuefocused implementations, Oracle provides the most comprehensive PLM solution in the industry. Oracle Enterprise PLM solutions enable product companies to: Accelerate innovation through ideation management and collaboration, product portfolio management and analytics, data consolidation and cleansing, and a rich enterprise product record Design for supply with product cost management, outsourced manufacturing and product collaboration, product supply risk analytics, and spend consolidation Rapidly commercialize through integrated portfolio and business planning, enterprise quality management and analytics, accurate and clean product data publishing, and rapid product commercialization Agile PLM Core Components A typical Oracle Agile PLM deployment consists of the following core components Component Application Server Function The Agile Application Server is the center of the Agile system, the base for the PLM platform, where all common services and business logic reside for the entire solution. The Agile Application Server runs on industry-leading J2EE application servers. All client servers and users connect to the Application Server either directly or indirectly. The application server connects to the components in a persistence layer where product content is stored. The 1 AGILE PLM ON ORACLE RAVELLO CLOUD SERVICE

application server consists of an Admin server and one or more Managed servers. Database Server Agile File Manager AutoVue for Agile PLM The Agile Database Server stores all product content and system settings. The Agile File Manager stores all documents, drawings, and other files within the Agile system. Due to the geographically dispersed nature of the global enterprise, multiple Agile File Managers can be deployed in a distributed configuration for efficient distribution of product content. Agile File Manager is made up of two main components: the file server and the file vault. The file vault represents the file system where the actual files reside. The file vault can be located on the application server or a dedicated storage system. AutoVue for Agile PLM allows users to view and mark up documents and drawings in a supported Web browser. One of the advantages of using AutoVue for Agile PLM is that users can view files stored in Agile without having the native application that created the file installed on their desktop systems. It also decreases bandwidth requirements and improves response time. Why run Agile PLM on Oracle Ravello? Enterprises running the Agile PLM application in their data-center, usually need many copies of their environment for various purposes. Typically for every production instance of the Agile PLM environment in their data-center, enterprises have 5 to 8 instantiations of this environment for preproduction use-cases such as development, testing, staging, and running User Acceptance Tests. However, most of the pre-production environments are live only for a few hours a day and are not needed 24x7. For such ephemeral needs, it doesn t make economic sense to invest in underutilized data-centers. Ravello is an ideal platform for use-cases with ephemeral needs. It offers data-center-like capabilities such as the ability to run VMware and KVM virtual machines with Layer 2 networking on public clouds. Such dynamic provisioning helps enterprises reduce their infrastructure costs for their ephemeral workloads. For example, an enterprise running one production instance and 5 pre-production environments of an Oracle Agile PLM deployment on-prem can achieve 60% savings by running on Oracle Ravello compared to on-prem. Moving Agile PLM to Oracle Ravello A typical multi-node Agile PLM deployment on VMware ESXi in a data-center has 3 VMs consisting of the following Agile PLM components Agile PLM database, Agile PLM Admin Server, Agile PLM Managed Server, Agile PLM File Manager, and AutoVue for Agile PLM. The deployment diagram is shown below: 2 AGILE PLM ON ORACLE RAVELLO CLOUD SERVICE

Figure 1. Agile PLM deployment diagram. The above on-prem deployment had Oracle Linux 7.3 running on ESXi VMs. Each of the VMs was configured with 2vCPU and 4GB RAM with the following network subnets configured - 10.0.0.0/24 - public network 1) IMPORT: To build the Agile PLM application on Ravello, we first import the VMs from the on-prem ESX environment into Ravello s VM library using the Import Tool. 2) BUILD: Once imported, we can create a new application by dragging and dropping the VMs onto the canvas. Figure 2. Building the application with imported VMs. 3 AGILE PLM ON ORACLE RAVELLO CLOUD SERVICE

a. The system resources such as the number vcpus and memory of each VM is preserved when they are imported into the Ravello library. Ravello also parses the metadata associated with the ESXi VM disk images and automatically recreates the network as it was set up in the data-center. Figure 3. Network view of the application. b. Next we will verify the settings in each VM, starting with the AppServer VM in Ravello. We make sure that the hostname field is populated and it matches the hostname in the VM. Figure 4. General tab view of the AppServer. c. Under the Disks tab, we select the para-virtualized controller, PVSCSI, for optimal performance. 4 AGILE PLM ON ORACLE RAVELLO CLOUD SERVICE

Figure 5. The Disks tab view of the AppServer. d. In the NICs tab, we select the VMXnet3 para-virtualized device for each of the NICs. This leads to better performance. Figure 6. Network interface of the AppServer. e. We have enabled HTTP service for the app server on port 7001 so that we can access the app from the internet. Make sure the External checkbox is checked. 5 AGILE PLM ON ORACLE RAVELLO CLOUD SERVICE

Figure 7. External services of the AppServer. f. We follow a similar verification process for each of the other VMs in the application. Once completed, the application is ready to be published on to the public cloud. 3) DEPLOY: Click Publish to deploy the application in the public cloud by selecting either the Cost-optimized or Performance-optimized option. 6 AGILE PLM ON ORACLE RAVELLO CLOUD SERVICE

Starting and running the Agile PLM Application The Agile PLM application needs to be started in the following sequence. Database server à Application server à File Manager You can start the VMs manually or create a start-up sequence via the VM Start Order option under the settings tab. 1.
