Subject: Science Grade: Third Objectives - All students will be able to: 1. Identify the steps to follow in the scientific method. (3.1.3.A9/B6/C4, 3.2.3.A6/B7, 3.3.3.A8/D3, 4.1.3.F, 4.2.3.D, 4.3.3.C, 4.4.3.E, 4.5.3.F) 2. Investigate how each invention was created to solve a problem. (3.4.3.C1/C2/C3/D1) 3. Understand why some animals are in danger of extinction (human and natural impact). (3.1.3.A2, 3.1.4.C1) 4. Identify different types of ecosystems by their characteristics, and the different habitats that make up those ecosystems. (4.1.3.A, 4.5.3.D, 4.2.3.B/C, 3.1.4.C1) 5. Understand that animals can be grouped based on physical characteristics and their physical characteristics are dependent on their habitat. (3.1.3.A1, 3.1.3.A2, 3.1.3.C1, 3.1.3.C2) 6. Understand the different aspects of space (moon phases, the solar system, Earth s orbit and rotation). (3.3.3.B1) 7. Understand how to make positive choices for a healthy lifestyle. 8. Understand the principles of conservation and recycling. (3.4.3.B2, 4.5.3.C/D) 9. Explain how air temperature, moisture, wind speed and direction, and precipitation make up the weather in a particular place in time. (3.3.3.A4/A5) 10. Explain the water cycle and different types of clouds. (3.3.3.A5, 3.3.6.A4) 11. Identify sources of energy (wind, solar, hydro). (3.2.3.B6, 3.4.3.E3, 4.1.3.C, 4.3.3.A/B, 4.5.3.A) 12. Identify specific landforms by their characteristics (including watersheds). (4.2.3.A)

13. Describe the different states of matter and their changes. (3.2.3.A1/A2/A3/A4/A5) 14. Identify and illustrate life cycles (animals). (3.1.3.A3) Essential Questions 1. How is the scientific method used to solve problems? 2. How can problem solving lead to new ideas and inventions? 3. How can we identify the reasons animals become extinct? 4. How are ecosystems and habitats identified by their characteristics? 5. How can animals be classified? How do adaptations help animals to survive in their habitat? 6. How can we learn about Earth and its neighbors? 7. How can you make choices to stay healthy? 8. How do your actions affect the environment both positively and negatively? 9. How does air temperature, moisture, wind speed and direction, and precipitation make up the weather in a particular place in time? 10. How do you explain the basic components of the water cycle and cloud formations? 11. How do people get energy from their environment? 12. How can you describe a landform according to its characteristics? 13. How do you tell the difference between the three different states of matter? How does matter change from one state to another? 14. How do you identify and illustrate life cycles?

Science Scientific Method - Hypothesis, Plan Investigation, Experiment, Gather Information, Share results - One or more experiments Inventions - Learned through Wonders (come back to it during several different weeks, this meets the technology standards) Endangered/Extinct Animals - Human (pollution, hunting, deforestation) and natural (flooding) impacts on why animals are becoming extinct - Wonders covers specific examples Ecosystems/Habitats - Marsh/wetland, forest, ocean, field, desert, artic plain - Parts of the ecosystem (animals, plants, and land features) - Explain food chain (predator, prey, consumer, producer, carnivore, herbivore, omnivore, decomposer) - Relationship between ecosystem and habitat (habitat is like a house and ecosystem is like a neighborhood) Animal Classifications - Mammals, reptiles, fish, amphibians, bird, insects - Invertebrates and vertebrates - Physical characteristics of the animals

Animal Adaptations - Animals physical characteristics related to their habitat - Adaptations means their unique characteristic to their environment (not the way they have adapted over time) Space - Earth s orbit, rotation, and axis tilt (cycle of seasons and days) - Moon phases (cycle) - Solar System (8 planets and the sun: names and interesting facts) Healthy Lifestyle - Found in Wonders, can integrate the food plate Conservation, Recycling, and Reusing - Effects of not recycling (pollution) - Natural resources - Nonrenewable and renewable resources Weather - Air temp, moisture, wind speed/direction, precipitation types - Tools used to measure the above (http://www.weatherwizkids.com/weatherinstruments.htm) - Extreme Weather ( see Wonders and expand with Book Room resources) Water Cycle and Cloud Formations - Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation, Runoff/Collection - Clouds: Cirrus, Cumulus, Nimbus, Stratus (and combinations) - Physical description of clouds and where they are found in the atmosphere

Energy - Wind, solar, hydro - Renewable and nonrenewable resources Landforms - Plain, mountain, valley, stream, river, lake, plateau, peninsula, island, ocean, mesa, canyon, hills, watershed States of Matter - Liquid, solid, gas - Changing states of matter (molecules, temperature) Lifecycles - Plants and animals - See Susan for books, or visit the Book Room
