Stability Studies for Pharmaceutical Products (API and Finished Products) Objective To provide an overview of the role of stability studies in the drug development process. It will highlight requirements for design of stability studies and provide opportunity for hands on application to develop a stability program based on current ICH stability requirements. Description Stability studies for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and pharmaceutical products are essential for pharmaceutical drug development and new product registration. The goals of stability study programs are to determine quality and shelf-life of a drug product and ensure a stable product on the market. This course covers the principles of stability programs for API and finished product in intended packaging configuration and discusses methods to evaluate and obtain relevant stability information using accelerated stability studies and stability-indicating methods. An overview of stability requirements from ICH Q1A (R2), FDA, EU and WHO will be presented along with review of recent FDA warning letters and citations. Participants will learn to design a stability study using ICH and/or global stability requirements. Course Outline Overview role of stability in drug development process Stability considerations during drug development (e.g. climate zoning) GMP, ICH stability requirements FDA, EU stability requirements WHO stability requirements Stability requirements to support new drug registration Factors affecting API and drug product expiry and shelf-life Basis for Forced-degradation studies Design of Forced-degradation/Stress studies Stability Program: stability storage conditions and test intervals, sampling plan, test methods and data reporting Importance of stability-indicating analytical methods Development of stability-indicating analytical methods Summary and comparison of guidance requirements for stability Key elements of a stability study protocol Design stability study protocol Regulatory expectations for stability studies/program Stability data at submission Other stability studies Post approval and product life cycle stability Review of warning letters and recent citations Current trends in stability testing to support global market Who should attend and what the participants will learn from the course? This two-day course is targeted toward professionals in the pharmaceutical industry such as those directly or indirectly involved with stability testing, R&D and QC chemists, laboratory supervisors or managers, QA reviewers, validation team members, project and manufacturing managers. About the Trainer Tony Robinson holds a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Liverpool University and has over 30 years of experience in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. His extensive background includes Research & Development, Scale-up & Tech Transfer, Manufacturing, Analytical Development, Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Regulatory and Project Management. His teaching experiences and presentations include the University of Toronto Professional Development Centre, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Processes; University of Milan, Italy; San Francisco, USA, Liverpool University, England, and Ottawa, Canada.
