Meetings Meeting 1 Kick off and introduction to the process 10-12 May 2016 Meeting 2 Discussing Working Draft 1 12-14 October 2016 Meeting 3 Discussing Working Draft 2 Scheduled for 27-29 March 2017 Two further meetings planned in 2017 12
WG 1 Task Forces (TF) 1) TF Non Wood Forest Products & Ecosystem Services 2) Trees outside the Forests (ToF) 3) Conversions 2 meetings per TF between June and August 13
Expected focus areas 1) Conversions / land use change 2) High Carbon Stocks 3) Ecologically important forest areas 4) Interpretations (plantations, natural forests, including tropical forests) 5) Requirements from procurement policies 6) Trees outside Forests (ToF) 7) Non Wood Forest Products (NWFP) 8) Legal compliance 9) Implementation on the national level / scheme assessment 14
Preliminary agreements Trees outside Forests (ToF) To develop an appendix of the SFM standard giving interpretations of the requirements for different production systems Non Wood Forest Products (NWFP) Development of a horizontal implementation Guide Ecosystem Services Pilot project recreational forests in Germany Further investigations 15 Conversions Wording of 5.1.11 HCS tool evaluation development
Preliminary agreements Implementation of a Risk Based Approach (RBA) Developing of a guidance document bridging the International Benchmark Standard and the national standard Guidance how to implement the international requirements considering different indicators which determine the risk not achieving the intended result on notional level 16
Preliminary agreements Adjustment of the standard language The requirements will look like: 5.1.4 The standard shall require that management plans or their equivalents include at least a description of the current forest management unit, longterm objectives; and the average annual allowable cut, including its justification and, where relevant, the annually allowable use of non-wood forest products. 17
Further discussion items / work in progress The structure of the SFM standard might migrate to the ISO High Level Structure for Management System Standards Criterion 1: Maintenance and appropriate enhancement of forest resources and their contribution to the global carbon cycle Closer link between the requirements and the global carbon cycle 18
Further discussion items / work in progress Criterion 4: Maintenance, conservation and appropriate enhancement of biological diversity in forest ecosystems 5.4.2: Link between ecologically important forest areas and High Conservation Value Forests 5.4.7: Reference to genetically modified trees Criterion 5: Maintenance and appropriate enhancement of protective functions in forest management (notably soil and water ) consider ecosystem services Requirements for protective functions will be re-drafted 19
Further discussion items / work in progress Criterion 6: Maintenance and appropriate enhancement of socio-economic functions and conditions New requirement about fair wages New requirement about gender equality Criterion: Compliance with legal requirements New requirement concerning overview about PEFC SFM requirements covered by law Improved legal compliance requirement 20
Further discussion items / work in progress Appendices Guidelines for the interpretation of requirements in the case of plantation forestry will be adapted accordingly Requirements for some natural forests, including tropical forests need further clarification 21
