Document Control No. TGI1300 TRENCH GRATE PARTS LIST 1. Assembled Grate TOOLS REQUIRED This is a list of tools and materials recommended for use in the installation of these joint systems. Tools and materials in this list are not provided by Balco, Inc. A. Trench Forms (by others) B. Spacers (by others) INSTALLATION These installation instructions are for use in the installation of Balco, Inc. MR-X-P Series Trench Grates. The MR-X-P Series is designed for installation in conjunction with a trench drain (by others) or concrete liner (by others). These installation instructions are appropriate for use in the installation of straight and radius configurations. The system is illustrated in Figure 1. The system shall be installed as follows: STEP 1. Review Balco, Inc. approved shop drawings for types and locations. STEP 2. Pour the concrete support pad, if required (see Figure 2). Ensure that the pad is the proper width, thickness, elevation, and length. Ensure that the top surface of the pad is level. If the trench has been formed already, proceed directly to Step 4. STEP 3. Using trench forms and spacers, form the trench on the support pad (see Figure 3). Ensure that the trench is the proper length, depth, and width for the specified trench grate system and that the trench grate will be level and flush with the finished floor when it is installed. Figure 2 NOTE: IF A TRENCH DRAIN OR CONCRETE LINER ARE SPECIFIED, THE DRAIN OR LINER CAN BE USED TO FORM THE TRENCH. IF THE DRAIN OR LINER IS USED TO FORM THE TRENCH, FOLLOW THE DRAIN OR LINER MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS TO COMPLETE THE TRENCH. STEP 4. Pour the concrete to form the trench. If a trench drain or concrete liner is used, form the trench Figure 3 3
Document Control No. TGI1300 in accordance with the drain or liner manufacturer's installation instructions (see Figure 4). Ensure that the trench is the proper width, depth, elevation, length, and configuration. STEP 5. After the concrete has cured, remove any concrete forms, liner supports, etc. in accordance with acceptable standard industry practice. STEP 6. If pavers or similar flooring materials are to be used for the finished floor, install them at this time. Install the finished floor materials in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and good industry practice. Ensure that the installed trench grate will be level with the finished floor. Figure 4 NOTE: PAVERS PLACED INTO A SAND BED MAY SETTLE, OR THEY MAY EXPAND IN HOT WEATHER. THESE PROCESSES CAN CAUSE THE PAVERS TO APPLY PRESSURE TO THE TRENCH GRATE SYSTEM, RESULTING IN IMPROPER ALIGNMENT OF THE GRATE, SECTIONS, DEFORMATION OF THE SYSTEM AND/OR DAMAGE TO THE TRENCH GRATE. MEASURES MUST BE TAKEN TO ENSURE THAT THE EXPANSION OR THE SETTLING OF THE PAVERS DOES NOT DEFORM THE TRENCH OR DAMAGE THE GRATE. PROVIDE ADDITIONAL RESTRAINT FOR THE PAVERS TO PREVENT THEM FROM DEFORMING THE TRENCH GRATE SYSTEM OR OTHERWISE DAMAGING IT. Figure 5 STEP 7. Place a section of the trench grate in position in the trench (see Figure 5). Ensure that the trench grate is properly centered in the trench and that the trench grate edges overlap the liner or the edge of the trench a minimum of 3/8". STEP 8. Place each subsequent section of the trench grate in position, splicing the sections of grate together as required. Figure 6 4
Document Control No. TGI1300 STEP 9. Splice bars are welded to sections of the grate. Slide the mating sections of grate together so that the splice bars attached to one section of the grate align the grate section with the mating section of the grate and so that the mating sections of grate are abutted together as closely as possible (see Figure 6 and Figure 7). Ensure that the sections of grate are properly aligned with one another. Figure 7 5
