Each person who installs, uses, or maintains this product should read the entire manual in advance and fully understand the directions. Safe use recommendations: Vestil strives to identify all hazards associated with the use of our products. However, material handling is dangerous and no manual can address every risk. The following warnings identify dangerous practices that are could result in death or serious personal injuries. Improper or careless use of this product might result in serious personal injuries. Failure to read and understand the entire manual before installing, using, or servicing the product constitutes misuse. Read the manual to refresh your understanding of proper use and maintenance procedures whenever necessary. Review the safety messages included in the manuals of other devices used in conjunction with the bulk bag lifter, e.g. crane, trolley, hoist, forklift, forklift attachment. ALWAYS inspect the lifter before each use according to the inspection procedures described in the most recent revision of ASME B30.20. B30.20 also describes inspections that should be performed frequently and periodically inspections. Conduct these inspections as detailed in the standard and with the recommended frequency. Properly maintain the lifter according to the maintenance procedures on p. 4 of the manual. Vestil developed these procedures to supplement the maintenance practices of ASME B30.20. ALWAYS attach the lifter to a safety hook (e.g. a hoist or forklift attachment that has a safety hook for engaging below-the-hook lifting devices), or to a connection that includes safety mechanisms to prevent accidental/unintended detachment from the hoist/forklift attachment. DO NOT connect the lifter to a safety hook that is not in normal operating condition. Make sure that the travel path is clear. DO NOT remove or obscure any label. Before using the lifter, confirm that all labels are in place and legible (see Labeling diagram on p. 4). DO NOT allow people to ride in the bulk bag or on the lifter. DO NOT attempt to lift material that weighs more than the rated load of the lifter or the bulk bag. DO NOT lift a load higher than necessary. Using the lifter: The bag lifter can either be mounted directly on the forks of a forklift, or be attached to a load hook. [NOTE: Capacity information appears in the Specifications table on p. 2 as well as on label #287 (see Labeling diagram on p. 4). Do not attempt to lift loads that weigh more than the capacity of your unit.] 1. To mount the lifter directly: a. Adjust the positions of the forks on their carriage to match to location of the fork brackets on the underside of the lifter; b. Insert the forks through all 4 fork brackets; c. Adjust to location of the lifter on the forks as necessary to accommodate a bulk bag; d. Attach the nylon safety strap to the fork carriage without slack; e. Elevate the forks; f. Attach the fabric hopper/bulk bag. Attach each of the 4 straps of the bag to one of the arms of the lifter. Slide the straps over the retainers and seat them into the strap slots. Lifting bale: connect bale to load hook Strap slot Fork bracket: insert forks through all 4 brackets whenever mounting lifter directly to forklift. Nylon safety strap Retainer Bag liner gatherer: press the top of the plastic bag liner into the gatherer 2. To attach the lifter to a load hook (e.g. the load hook of a D-FORK style forklift attachment): a. Attach the lifting eye to the load hook. b. [If using a fork attachment] Fasten the safety strap to the fork carriage without slack. c. Attach the fabric hopper/bulk bag. Attach each of the 4 straps of the bag to one of the arms of the lifter. Slide the straps over the retainers and seat them into the strap slots. Because this product can be used as a fork attachment, contact the manufacturer of your fork truck (or a professional engineer) and request a determination of how its use will affect the capacity, operation and maintenance of your fork truck. The analysis can also be performed by a professional engineer. Plates, tags, labels, etc. affixed to the truck should be updated to include the results of the analysis. The truck should also be marked to identify the BBL- 4 attachment and to display the approximate weight of the truck and attachment combination at maximum elevation with load laterally centered. Inspections and maintenance: (A) Before each use and AT LEAST once per month, inspect the following: 1.) Frame: Inspect the bale, fork brackets, and main frame for deformations, cracks, etc. 2.) Safety strap: Closely examine the strap, snap hook, and the hook at the free end of the strap. Look for thinned, frayed, torn, or significantly worn areas. 3.) Labels: Examine the labels (see diagram below). Confirm that each label is present, readable, and in good condition. (B) Yearly inspection Once per year, load the lifter to full capacity. Lift the load for about 1 minute; then lower it and disconnect the load from the lifting hook. After the load is removed, closely inspect all parts and surfaces of the entire D-FORK for fatigue, cracks or deformation. If any significant damage is observed, remove the D-FORK from service. Label placement diagram: The product should always be labeled as shown in the diagram below. Replace any label that is missing, damaged or unreadable.
