Life is like a ten speed bicycle. Most of us have gears we never use - Charles M. Schulz I. INTRODUCTION Critical thinking skills are needed by students who want to gain success as future leaders. Having sound critical thinking skills will enable students to learn and practice problem solving by making questions, assumptions, and perspective. This can be achieved if the students are exposed with various activities that will enhance their critical thinking skills. Sampoerna University English Competition (SUEC) is one of the activities that will help students in practicing their critical thinking skills through three types of competition: Debate, Speech, and Newscasting. Hosted by the Learning Resource Center (LRC), SUEC tries to cater the need to develop Indonesian youths English and critical thinking skills.
PAST & PRESENT COMPETITIONS For three years we have held the Sampoerna University Debate Championship by applying the British Parliamentary System. In the year 2014, LRC managed to invite 16 high schools from all over Indonesia, namely from Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, and Sumatera Selatan. In the 2016 SUDC, ILC managed to host a championship for 12 junior and senior high schools with a total of 20 teams. In 2017, we managed to upscale the championship with a total 20 institutions from Jakarta, Tangerang, Sidoarjo, Medan, Pontianak, Bogor, and Bali. This year LRC, with the help of Sampoerna University English Club, wants to repeat the success of the previous championships by holding its first Sampoerna University English Competition which will involve even bigger participants in Indonesia.
II. THEME AND GOALS With the theme Accelerate your Optimum the competition will have 3 (three) competition branches which are: Debate, Speech, and Newscasting. This competition is intended to 1. Raise the awareness of Indonesian youth on current issues to exist not only in Indonesia but also worldwide. 2. Provide an opportunity for Indonesian students to enhance their public speaking, English, and critical thinking skills. 3. Promote enhancement of skills that will be beneficial for students to em brace a more competitive situation in the future.

IV. COMPETITIONS A. Debate By joining Debate competition, participants will be able to develop not only their confidence in delivering their opinions but also their critical thinking and analytical skills. Participants will enhance their skills in developing arguments in a logical manner by providing samples and justifications. The debate competition will apply the British Parliamentary system in which four teams will deliver their arguments based on the motion assigned. Prepared and impromptu motions will be applied in the debate rounds and will cover various issues in the field of culture, social, politics, environment, and law. A total of 32 teams from various institutions in Indonesia will compete in preliminary rounds before they compete in the elimination rounds. B. Speech In the Speech competition, students will not only develop their English and Critical thinking skills but also enhance their public speaking skills such as body language, eye contact, and speech organization. By referring to the Toastmasters International and Ted Talks methods, participants will compete in preliminary, semifinal, and final rounds in which they will be assessed on their speech development & content, manner, mechanics, appropriateness, and accuracy in delivering their ideas on various issues Registration fee Includes Quota : IDR 175,000,- / participant : Competition seminar, certificate, and lunch. : 25 participants - 3 participants/institution, 1 wait list partici pant/institution. C. Newscasting A unique experience as an English news anchor will be gained by participants of Newscasting competition. Participants will practice and enhance their English skills in delivering news in various settings such as delivering news in a news studio, live report, weather forecast, and interview. Participants will compete in preliminary, semifinal, and final rounds and they will be assessed by judges who have the expertise in the newscasting field. Registration fee Includes Quota : IDR 175,000,- / participant : Competition seminar, certificate, and lunch. : 25 participants - 3 participants/institution, 1 wait list partici pant/institution. Newscasting (incl. Trophy & Certificate) 1st Winner IDR 1.500.000,2nd Winner IDR 1.000.000,3rd Winner IDR 750.000,- Note: All money prizes are subjects of 6% tax deduction of the said amount.
V. ADJUDICATORS AND JUDGES To ensure fruitful experience in SUEC 2018, we will work with both nationally and internationally recognized judges and adjudicators. VI. REGISTRATION PROCEDURES 1. Fill in the online registration form http://sampoernauniversity.ac.id/en/suec. 2. Wait for the registration confirmation from our registration team, in which we will provide payment information. 3. Pay the registration fee to the bank account which is informed by our registra tion committee. 4. Scan the transfer receipt or transfer evidence and send it to info.suec@sampoernauniversity.ac.id or our registration contact persons (WA or e-mail). Use the subject Payment_Name of Institution 5. After the payment phase, SUEC registration team will send a registration link and you can register the participants from your institution. 6. Our committee will send notification and other information related with the championship to each institution PIC s email. 7. Registration will be closed on 23 April 2018.
NOTE: For debate, to secure a place in the Main List, payment evidence need to be sent to the committee in 2 (two) days after the online registration to: info.suec@sampoernauniversity.ac.id or by contacting our registration officer. Any payment cannot be reimbursed if a team or a participant resign from the competition. Please make sure you keep the original transfer evidence that need to be submit ted in the technical meeting.
VII. TECHNICAL MEETING Technical meeting will be held on 27 April 2018, from 2:00 5:00 PM at Location: Sampoerna University Multi-Purpose Hall L Avenue Office Tower Ground Floor Jl Raya Pasar Minggu Kav.16 Jakarta Selatan, 12780 Documents which are need to be submitted on the Technical Meeting: 1. Original Transfer receipt / Print out SMS Banking/Online Banking transfer. 2. 2 photos Color or b/w(size 3x4) of each participant. 3. Official School's Letter which declare that the participants are official representative of your institution. 4. Photocopy of ID/school ID of each participant. All participants are expected to come to the Technical Meeting. Further information about the technical meeting will be informed by our registration committee.
