Working with communities on urban sustainability ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability International network that advances local sustainability. Established in 1990 in New York by cities, for cities. Members: 1,500+ cities, towns, counties and their associations from 70 countries representing ±600 million people.
ICLEI Europe Focus on local sustainable development ICLEI Europe: Regional office based in Freiburg, dealing with 40+ countries in wider Europe (also supported by ICLEI Brussels office). The starting point (I) Cities and regions have a stake in the energy transition Europe has ±500 million inhabitants, with +100,000 local governments (LGs). Rising energy costs Air pollution Urban poverty New infrastructure requirements (eg transport) Rising global emissions levels leading to severe threats from local climatic impacts Local impact on climate change (GHGs). Local impact of climate change (storms, flooding, drought).
The starting point (II) Local (and sub-national) action moves the world Wide ranging responsibilities: Community administrators (policy, regulations) Service providers (education, health, owners / managers of infrastructure) Leaders (provide direction, set example, motivate), stimulate economy Options to shape processes / efficiency / energy use: Staff, citizens, business, industry Electricity, heating, cooling Buildings, urban planning Transport, waste and water

Joining Forces THE GLOBAL COVENANT OF MAYORS FOR CLIMATE AND ENERGY The joining of these two forces will create the broadest global coalition committed to climate leadership, building on the commitment of 7, 400+ cities from six continents and 119 countries representing more than 600 million residents
Vision We envision a world where committed mayors and local governments in alliance with partners accelerate ambitious, measurable climate and energy initiatives that lead to an inclusive, just, lowemission and climate resilient future, helping to meet and exceed the Paris agreement objectives. Mission The Global Covenant of Mayors serves cities and local governments by mobilizing and supporting ambitious, measurable, planned climate and energy action in their communities by working with city/regional networks, national governments and other partners to achieve our vision

What is your vision for urban development? ICLEI 2017 www.iclei-europe.org
From air pollution to clean energies and clean air
From Congestion and pollution To efficient, clean and healthy mobility and transport services
From grey infrastructure only to a mix with quality green infrastructure and ecosystem services

Challenges for the transition unsynchronised cycles of planning, decision-making & investment traditional governance & management culture lack of technical expertise and knowledge lack of business cases and examples difficult access to financing traditional investors and beneficiaries in the sector vs. new actors and beneficiaries public procurement criteria
Opportunities from the transition improved awareness transparency and control on natural resources, climate change and sustainability new infrastructure as a trigger for sustainable innovation and new markets improved quality of the environment social inclusion and economic opportunities Contribution to a sustainable and resilient economy creation of new opportunities for investments and profits increased trust in governance
Key factors for a successful transition clear long-term goals and vision a solid analysis of potentials and opportunities consequent alignment of plans and investments with the goals and vision a good regulatory framework and favourable market conditions for sustainable infrastructure new infrastructure as a trigger for sustainable innovation and new markets
