KoolShade is a bronze miniature micro louvre system woven and configured into a mesh that has been designed to provide unhindered outward view whilst blocking the direct rays of the sun, thereby minimising the solar heat gain and glare into a building. Record breaking summer temperatures, coupled with new Building Regulations, has focused building designers attention closely on the problems caused by solar overheating of buildings, with a need to find sustainable and beneficial solutions that save energy, especially air conditioning running costs. Uncomfortable hot working environments can result in a reduction of productivity, costly mistakes and an increase in absenteeism. KoolShade is the elegant and cost effective solution to these problems. It is a well known fact, that by preventing the suns rays from entering a building through windows by means of an array of aluminium louvres, fixed externally to the building is a very effective and popular solution. However, the problem with this method is that vision is greatly obscured with the look of the building dictated by the presence of costly large banks of louvres. KoolShade affords all the performance of large louvre systems but also provides excellent outward vision with many other advantages. The KoolShade system is made of micro louvres which are just over IN THE SHADE..! For Centuries shade has served man as a protection against the effects of the sun s hot rays. Today, not only does shade improve comfort for building occupants but it also conserves energy which is ever increasingly expensive. GLARE REDUCTION KoolShade effectively reduces the glare caused by peak summer and low level winter sun angles. glare HEAT GAIN The sun s rays create Solar Heat Gain and can increase the building s airconditioning load by 50% or more, running up excessive power bills and needlessly wasting energy. KoolShade reduces Solar Heat Gain through glass to a far greater degree than any other shading device on the market, yet permits almost unhindered vision, admitting finely diffused natural daylight. 1mm wide and 0.18mm thick. This provides two main advantages over traditional sized louvre. Firstly, this lightweight material can be fitted to the outside of a window without compromising the look of the building or having to strengthen the supporting structure. Secondly the occupants can look out of the windows at a virtually un-interrupted view. In fact when the KoolShade system is fixed in close proximity to the window it provides, 100% shading at approximately 40o or above. The KoolShade system will reduce glare, provide a privacy screen, or security screen, (preventing objects penetrating the window), additionally it will also reduce heat loss from the building in the winter by up to 15%. It even provides an effective barrier to keep insects out! SUSTAINABLE MATERIAL KoolShade louvres are woven bronze micro louvres. and are just over 1mm in width, which is smaller than the profile of a penny and just 0.18mm thick spaced at 7-8 per cm. The microblades are tilted nominally at 30o to the horizontal and held in place by two bronze wires, knotted above and below each micro louvre wire,
REDUCED AIR-CON COSTS Up to 500w/m2co can penetrate through glazing in the peak summer months. KoolShade can massively reduce solar heat gain and airconditioning running costs. heat gain INSECT SCREENS With 700 micro louvre blades per linear metre nominal, KoolShade creates an excellent insect screen. privacy HEAT LOSS REDUCTION KoolShade creates a thermal barrier between itself and the glass which helps reduce winter heating costs. security WEATHER PROTECTION Driving wind and rain is broken up as it passes through the KoolShade screen, thereby providing a protective second skin to the building.
LATE 1970 s PECKHAM POLICE STATION With Peckham Police Station being a listed building the solar solution needed to blend discreetly with the building style. Due to KoolShade s versatility it not only offers invaluable solar shading but also provides privacy and acts as the perfect anti-vandal screen, making KoolShade the best overall solar control solution. To manufacture KoolShade, strands of bronze are woven together on a loom and formed into the raw material. It can then be cut and framed to virtually any shape desired. A variety of paint finishes can then be applied. Once framed, (virtually any configuration is possible) the KoolShade screens can be fixed to the building in a number of ways. In addition to static fixing, the screens can also be hinged or on a horizontal sliding roller arrangement. KoolShade was fitted to the South and East elevations. LATE 1980 s Ten years on......still looking good. Viewed from the outside, KoolShade provides the perfect environmentally friendly solution to the problems of solar overheating of buildings, without the need for canopies, protrusions or internal blinds, (see right). 20 years on... TODAY case studies Fabrication The fabrication of KoolShade uses the minimum amount of material to its maximum effect, in fact standard KoolShade weighs just under 3kgs per mtr2 whereas typical louvre aerofoil solar shading systems would weigh in the region of 30kgs per mtr2. Installation of this product is so versatile that it is well suited to new builds as well as retro-fit, offering an array of alternative fixings to suit almost any application. Vinyl Strip KoolShade Bronze Wire Material This is how well the KoolShade has stood the test of time. Here are just a selection of the different RAL colours available with this product, lending it particularly well to Retro-Fit Projects. Additionally, with so many constraints placed upon listed buildings, preservation areas and English Heritage sites it is often difficult to install a product that blends discreetly with the building......until now! Stainless Steel Lacer Wire Machined Corner Post Screens can be manufactured and configured to virtually any shape. Aluminium Extrusions available in any RAL colour and with alternative fixings.
BEFORE AFTER Companies protected by A TYPICAL KOOLSHADE INSTALLATION Typical 1960 s architecture brought into the 21st Century with KoolShade. This building comprised of 20 floors with some 45 windows on each floor on the South elevation. Suffering with extreme Solar Heat Gain throughout the year, particularly from April to September. With the added problem of the narrowness of the building making heat gain a problem affecting all areas. With KoolShade in place all staff can now enjoy comfortable working conditions, more efficient air conditioning, no heat gain or glare and much lower running costs. case studies So it s clear to see that KoolShade is one of the best solutions on the market today in combating heat gain and the glare from the sun. OTHER PROJECTS Christie s Auction Rooms, London Victoria & Albert Museum, London Ursuline Convent School, Kent W Sussex County Council, Chichester Heathrow Airport, Middlesex MAINTENANCE Being virtually maintenance free KoolShade only requires hosing with clean water once or twice a year, cutting down on the amount of window cleaning required. cleaning HEATHROW AIRPORT Due to the unusual nature of the shape of buildings and walkways connecting buildings the heat gain and glare caused by the baking sun was an issue for passengers and colleagues. The KoolShade was fitted so that each panel could move independently for maintenance and cleaning purposes. This application was particularly suited as of its lightweight construction and ease of installation creating a pleasant walkway with virtually unhindered vision looking out.
