ITER Status & Opportunities Meeting with CONFINDUSTRIA Piemonte Torino, November 16 th 2015 Benjamin Perier

AGENDA Fusion ITER Fusion for Energy (F4E) Project status Business Opportunities what/how? F4E - Torino, 16th November 2015 2

WHAT IS FUSION Bringing the power of the sun to earth Fusion is the process that powers the sun and other stars When light atoms fuse at very high temperatures, they release enormous amounts of energy Fusion on earth needs temperatures of 100-150 million degrees C Many experiments in Europe and the rest of the world F4E - Torino, 16th November 2015 3

WHY FUSION? Abundant fuels delivering sustainable and safe energy Abundant The basic fuels are plentiful and widely available Sustainable Fusion produces no greenhouse gas (CO 2 ) emissions Safe Fusion does not produce any long-lived radioactive waste A fusion reactor can not run out of control F4E - Torino, 16th November 2015 4

WHAT IS ITER? World s largest international energy research project ITER Seven ITER parties 50% of the world s population 80% of the world s GDP F4E - Torino, 16th November 2015 5

WHAT WILL ITER DO? Demonstrate that fusion is a viable source of energy Fusion on a much larger scale than in present experiments 10 times as much power out as power in (500 MW) Study burning plasma and maintain for up to an hour Test key technologies for future fusion reactors F4E - Torino, 16th November 2015 6

HOW IS ITER BEING BUILT? Pooling resources from around the world Each party is manufacturing different components of ITER and delivering them to the project Europe is the main shareholder in the project Europe is providing around half of the components F4E s main activity today is working with: European industry SMEs fusion laboratories to design and build the ITER components F4E - Torino, 16th November 2015 7

ITER IS AN IMPRESSIVE PROJECT Facts & Figures 23.000 tonnes Small in size 1 million components 360 tonnes 5.000 workers Three times the weight of the Eiffel Tower Main building smaller than the boiler of a coal power plant ITER: 10 7 Airbus 380: 10 6 Every main magnet to weigh 360 tons as much as fully loaded Boeing 747-300 5.000 people on the ITER site F4E - Torino, 16th November 2015 8

WHAT IS F4E? The European Union organisation for the development of Fusion Energy F4E is a public organisation set up in 2007 for 35 years Headquarters: Barcelona, Spain Offices: Cadarache, France Garching, Germany Members of staff: ~400 (engineers, scientists, buyers ) Budget: 6.6 billion EUR 2007-2020 almost 6 billion EUR for the construction of the ITER project F4E - Torino, 16th November 2015 9

WHAT IS F4E S MISSION? Developing fusion through three projects: F4E is responsible for Europe s contribution to ITER, the world s largest energy project F4E is collaborating with Japan on a number of projects in the field of fusion known as the Broader Approach F4E will prepare a programme for the development of the next generation of Demonstration Fusion Reactors F4E - Torino, 16th November 2015 10

STATUS OF ITER COMPONENTS Making the ITER Vacuum Vessel A complex and huge vacuum vessel is used to contain the hot plasma Made from solid stainless steel that is 60 mm thick! Made up of nine sectors like the segments of an orange When all the sectors are joined, it will weigh more than 5000 tonnes! About to be pressed into shape After pressing into shape Welding Pieces Together F4E - Torino, 16th November 2015 17

STATUS OF ITER COMPONENTS Making the ITER Magnets Magnets hold the hot plasma and refrain it from touching the walls of the vacuum vessel To reduce electricity loss from magnets, special superconducting cable is used Europe is making 18 of the largest ITER magnets which weigh 6500 tonnes each! Spool of cable Cables wrapped into shape Cable is wrapped around a D-shape F4E - Torino, 16th November 2015 18
