118 THE BOOK OF PACKAGING SOLUTIONS PRODUCTS STRETCH Understanding Different Types of Film Blown Films Blown stretch films are typically used for heavier irregular loads and applications requiring excellent puncture and tear resistance. Additives are used to provide excellent cling and superior load stabilisation characteristics. As a result, blown stretch films can be noisy as reels are unwound. See page 119 for blown stretch films. Cast Films Cast stretch films provide a smooth surface with excellent optics, gloss, strength and cling without additives. See page 120 for hand-applied cast stretch films and page 122 for our machine cast stretch films. Pre- Films Pre-stretching involves stretching the film during manufacture. The process can increase film strength, improve load stability, reduce the volume of stretch wrap film needed and subsequently save on stretch film packaging costs. We offer a range of pre-stretched stretch films designed to achieve optimal pre-stretching results that can be used with stretch wrap machines and manual application operations. Key benefits experienced from using pre-stretched films include: Reduced wastage Faster wrapping Improved health and safety for users See page 122 for pre-stretch films. Selecting The Best Film For Your Requirements When selecting stretch films consider the following: Performance Selecting a stretch film that provides the right yield strength and performance for the loads being wrapped is crucial. The yield strength denotes the amount of stress a stretch film can withstand without permanently having plastic deformation. Prior to reaching the yield point, a stretch film will elastically deform but return to it s original shape once the stress is removed. We ve categorised our stretch films by strength: Hand-Applied Blown or Cast Film (mu) Hand-Applied Pre- Film (mu) Film (mu) Extra Light 6 12 SuperLight 15 Light 11 11 17 Medium 14 20 Heavy 16 23 Super Heavy 19 30 Ex Super Heavy 28 s Consider the products being wrapped. Also look at the weight load (typically per pallet), the load profile as described below, and the transit process the load will experience. Time, Use and Cost Use Hand wrapping is best suited for smaller or sporadic stretch film wrapping requirements. Introducing machine wrapping may ultimately save time, resources and packaging materials. Overlapping This is a technique for covering the top of your pallet using polythene top sheets (see page 112 for top sheets). This protects your products and provides a downward force on the pallet load. When overlapping hand applied films, it is recommended users allow up to a 50% overlap. If using machine applied films, users should allow a 50 mm overlap, regardless of the film width. Banding This refers to applying multiple wraps of stretch film to a particular area of a pallet to reinforce the load or band multiple units together. Neckdown This happens when a film loses its dispensing roll width and narrows down while being stretched. Neckdown reduces the coverage each wrap provides thereby making it likely that more wrap rotations and more film will be needed to wrap a load or pallet. A Load Profile B Load Profile C Load Profile Are You Using The Best Film For Your Requirements? Before selecting a stretch film, we d recommend you measure your current usages and review your application. The best way to calculate your usage is to look at your stretch yield in metres and your yield costs in weight. This enables you to calculate the effectiveness of your stretch wrap by calculating the cost to wrap a pallet. Still not sure? Contact us to review your requirements. www.macfarlanepackaging.com 119 Hand-Applied Films Hand-applied stretch films are used for manual stretch wrap packaging application. All hand-applied stretch films are supplied on standard cores for use with hand-applied applicators or extended cores. Always place the outside of the film to the pallet surface Secure film to the pallet before wrapping by tying to the pallet base Always ensure the film covers the base of the pallet and the bottom layer of the load Wrap the bottom of the pallet at least twice to secure load Overlap film by 30% to 50% Depending on the weight of the load, consider wrapping the pallet twice To maximise strength use the film horizontally to create a strap Hand-Applied Blown Film Clear Films Manual stretch wrapping for heavy or irregular loads. 001217 Standard Light 400 x 300 6 432 000437 Standard Medium 400 x 300 6 432 000092 Extended Medium 400 x 300 6 324 003152 Standard Medium 500 x 300 6 270 000247 Standard Heavy 400 x 300 6 432 001980 Extended Heavy 400 x 300 6 300 003156 Standard Heavy 500 x 300 6 270 004821 Standard Super Heavy 400 x 300 6 336 000897 Standard Extra Heavy 400 x 200 6 336 Black Films 001140 Standard Heavy 500 x 250 6 240 256303 Standard Super Heavy 500 x 250 6 270 Hand-Applied Blown Pre-ed Film Reduced waste with increased strength and better load stability. 120 THE BOOK OF PACKAGING SOLUTIONS PRODUCTS STRETCH Hand-Applied Cast Films A strong stretch film without additives, that clings only to itself and is quieter to use than other films. Kraft ribbed paper SEE PAGE 92 Mail Lite White & Gold SEE PAGE 46 Heat sealers SEE PAGE 111 Glue gun SEE PAGE 142 Demonstrating savings on stretch wrap At Macfarlane Packaging we help customers reduce cost and material usage throughout their entire packaging range We conducted a stretch health check with our customer who had recently invested in 5 core break stretch wrap machines but were using a power pre film, this meant that the 24 micron cast film they were using did not stretch as well as it should. They were using 705 grams of film to wrap each pallet. We ran a comparison with two other films - 7 and 9 micron. Tests recommended that we replaced their existing product with the 9 micron Pre performance film which offered a much better load stability. This switch resulted in a yield improvement of 314% - wrapping 588 pallets per tonne vs 142 pallets per tonne with the existing stretch wrap. The weight of stretch used on each pallet dropped to 170 grams, this offered an overall saving of 56% on stretch wrap spend. The stretch health check not only took cost out of the operation but reduced waste packaging, improved carbon footprint and increased productivity less roll changes were required on the stretch machine.
